If they sign Watson and the other pitchers and relievers pitch well in spring training then Luhnow will have to deal someone.  It hurts to deal good major league pitching.

It is a very good problem to have. I would love for the Astros to sign Watson but it would definitely create a roster crunch. Jim l, I think you have said before that they should release Sipp. I would certainly not mind seeing him go and wish we could find a team willing to take him. While I love Colin McHugh and would hate to see him leave, he does have some value. Perhaps you package the two of them together to someone for lower level prospects to not only create roster space for someone like Watson, but to dump Sipp’s salary which is wasted money if you ask me.

Oh, and speaking of a crowded pitching roster, Richard Justice said on MLB Network a couple of nights ago that the Astros fully expect Whitley to pitch in the bigs in 2018. This was said AFTER the Cole trade. Barring injuries or some disaster I don’t  know where he fits in unless it would be as a September call up to prep him to replace Keuchel in 2019.

Again, to quote Jim, it is a “good problem to have.”

Yeah, I wonder if Sipp has any value at all. I cannot believe they will start the season with no LHP in the pen.I hope they sign Watson and worry about this later, but I have no seen anything saying the Astros are in on him.

They're really hoping Gose pans out.  He's got a quality arm.

Gose?  Is that the wild child lefty who throws triple digits?  I wouldn't want to hang my hat on him.

You’d better. He is Rule 5.

The fact that the Astros, a well-stocked, contending team with 40-man issues decided to use a 40-man spot on Gose does make me think they must really like him. This is not the time to be carrying a Rhiner Cruz type.

A lefty that can throw 100 is worth taking a flier on and it's not like there's any risk, if he can't cut it you cut him and move on.

No risk, no, but meanwhile he’s taking up space on the 40-man from the moment they drafted him. That’s why you rarely see teams as good as the Astros take a guy in the Rule 5.

Yes, but they’re now at 38.

I apologize, I thought Gose was a nickname for Guduan, but it’s apparently an actual guy named Gose.

I’ve tuned out on the off-season, who is this guy and where’d we get him from?

The short version? Former OF with some MLB time who didn't pan out. Now 27 years old, just converted to pitching this past season and is a LHP who hits 98. Results weren't great in High-A ball and he had injury issues. He pitched in high school and was regarded as a legit 2-way prospect at the time.

When the Astros took him, Goldstein indicated in an ideal world he could not only pitch but occasionally pinch-run or play some late-game OF - he is extremely fast.

Anthony Gose?  The dude we had for a few minutes and played for the Blue Jays?

I guess it's ok to take a flier on the guy, but they are planning to bank on an established lefty, correct?  This is a flier, not the plan, correct?

Or the Astros can work out a deal with the team they got him from and then reassign Gose to the minors.  It happens all of the time.
Boom!

Well, I do say that this is an interesting "thinking outside the box" thought in roster construction as he can certainly do the latter things Goldstein mentions, in a totally serviceable way, IIRC.

Yes, that Gose. Oswalt trade, flipped for Brett Wallace.

He has to be considered a long shot to make the team, but we'll see. Luhnow and co. have said they are happy having RHP who get lefties out - Harris and Devo are particularly good at it - so it's anyone's guess whether they'll acquire a more established lefty and jettison Sipp.

Luhnow said the same about Joe Smith.  "He's also got effective weapons against lefthanders."
