White Sox @ Astros...September 21, 2017
« on: September 21, 2017, 07:32:40 pm »
For a 93-win, division winning team, there doesn't seem to be much interest...either in the stands or in the GZ

At any rate...bottom of the first...Astros have two on with one out, and Fuller has to leave the game with an injury
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Correa grounds into 5-4-3 double play to end the Astros threat in the first

Not sure.  Looks like something on his hand or finger.  Blister maybe?  Wasn't hit by a ball or anything, and it didn't look like his arm.

Top of the second...seeing eye groundball single to LF, followed by a swinging bunt, that could have been an out, but Keuchel couldn't handle it, and it's two Sox on with no one out...

I'm here. Got my Smart TV set configured to watch the Astros. Also works on my laptop if I want to go out to the garage. I will try not to speak of tires or art museums or using superglue in a minor medical emergency.

There is a disturbing trend starting to emerge among MLB players...white shoes.  This needs to be nipped in the bud.

Is it my imagination or does Keuchel get completely locked in to throwing in the lower 1/8th of the zone at times?

I saw a # the other day of how many pitches Keuchel throws at 2 ft. from the ground..  It is a high % of his pitches, more than any other pitcher.  We know that from watching him but as a hitter I would just give him that area and only swing if he gets it up.

Tars is always a good discussion... the mention of Contis made me remember they were best for doing burnouts on my old 750!

Oh well.  Glad the damage was minimized.

i'm around, but understand we can't talk about anything but the baseball game.  That's great!  Except for foul balls and wild pitches, it's a game played between the lines.  That's where I'm stayin'.

B2:

Marwin flies out F8...Kalas reaches orgasm
Bregman lines a single up the middle
Beltran flies out F9 on the first pitch
Gurriel...wearing white spikes...lines a single up the middle, Bregman to 2B
McCann...quickly down 0-2...1-2...2-2...3-2...and Bregman is picked off of 2B

1-0 Sox

Not just the fans interest waning.  Between Keuchel walking the #8 w the bases loaded and Bregman caught napping off the bag, doesn't seem the Astros see any urgency to regain what Cleveland has claimed.

Speaking of Ninfa's, we had a conversation last night among the expats about where's the first place you go to eat when you get back to the US.  For the Texans, it was a toss up between Whataburger and Mexican food.  Personally, for me it's the latter.

So did you come back from your Arkansas fishing trip without getting a ticket at Damascus?

We flew to Memphis and stayed down near the St. Louis AAA team stadium.  Didn't go see a game though.  Then we flew back out of Little Rock.  We did stop at every liquor store in north Arkansas before we got to the dry county we were staying in.  I caught a 24" rainbow, and if Jose Altuve were half that much taller the runner would have been out at second.

If Altuve ever learned how to make a tag, he'd be a decent second baseman.

Hack Harelson is fucking awful. He bitches constantly, says stupid things constantly, and never admits he's wrong when the stupid shit his says inevitably is incorrect.

Speaking of Ninfa's, we had a conversation last night among the expats about where's the first place you go to eat when you get back to the US.  For the Texans, it was a toss up between Whataburger and Mexican food.  Personally, for me it's the latter.
Mexican for me too. Hell, I just need to leave the state.

T3:

Moncada...3-2...walks
Abreu lines one down the LF line, bounces off of Keuchels' corner...Marwin plays it, makes a great throw to 2B which beats Abreu by 20 feet, but Altuve chases Abreu around because he has no idea to make a tag and Abreu somehow manages to dance around and reach 2B for a double.  Moncada to 3B
Garcia...infield back...3-0...walks
Smith...0-2...1-2...2-2...grounds into 6-4-3 double play, Moncada scores, Abreu to 3B
Saladino strikes out looking

2-0 Sox

Mexican for me too. Hell, I just need to leave the state.

Lately I've been going to El Real, not Ninfas.  I had a bad experience at Ninfas last time I went.  They used to run a shuttle from Ninfa's to MMPUS, where Brian McCann just hit a home run to start the bottom of the third.

Their beef fajitas and enchiladas are choice, but I generally bring out of towners to Ninfa's for the ambience and history... and, increasingly as the quality fades a bit, because they are unlikely to know any better.

I stayed at The Peabody in June and there was a game that night too.  Having a cocktail at The Peabody isn't a bad way to spend time.

We never made it to the morning waddle, but the evening they waddle down a red carpet to the elevator.  Technically they waddle through the lobby, but really they waddle through the lobby bar with about 200 people drinking in amazement.  The Peabody (because of the ducks) and the Plaza (because of the Oak Bar) are the only hotels I've ever stayed in the lived up to their hype.  They're part of America, like baseball.

We actually went to Memphis because of the ducks, and because HH had visited the Gibson Guitar factory, because of the new civil rights museum, and because it was on the way to Arkansas.  I loved the City, even if we didn't make it to the baseball game.  The Mexican food sucks, but the barbecue is perfectly ok.  It's only good enough for a McCann walk.

Do you know what? I've been to Memphis many times but I cannot for the life of me remember where or what I've ever eaten. I think I just unearthed one of those repossessed memories where I (shamefully) ate (terrible) Mexican food.

I do remember buying a Big Star t-shirt at Shangi-la Records. I sure would like to know what happened to that shirt.

It's a good hotel and The Rendezvous is across the street. I think it's highly overrated though.
i ate at the Rendezvous with a local who knew Charles son Nick quite well. When the first rack of ribs were brought out we started chowing down. Then our waiter comes out and ask how are the ribs. They seemed fine to me, but without hesitation, my friend Jud says, "they're not meaty enough." The guy apologized and came back with a second rack that was just a little bit "meatier" and left the original rack there for us too. They weren't bad Memphis BBQ Pork Ribs. I liked Authur Bryants in Kansas City a little better.

I've always gravitated towards  The Monteleone in New Orleans. The Carousel Bar is unique.  And Mr. B's is across the street.

The one place in Memphis I wanted to go but didn't get to was the Stax Museum of American Soul.  I dragged the missus to the Gibson factory, but that's all she was having.

Did you visit Ardent Studios?

Drove past but didn't go in. I should have.

The Mexican place was in Overton Square. Looking at the street view I think the restaurant was in what is now Lafayette's. I see that next door there's a place called Babalu. There used to be a Latin nightclub in the Mexican neighborhood of Milwaukee called Babalu. I once ran into a gaggle of Astros in there.

I need to go there. I also want to go to Al Green's church.

An interviewer once asked Elvis Costello if he believed in the supernatural. After a pause he replied, I saw Al Green once.

I saw him once too and sort of know what he means. It was at President Clinton's first inauguration celebration. Now that I think about it, I also saw Booker T and the MGs at the same shindig.

Graceland's been re-done, and I was surprised how much I liked it.  We made Sun, and drove past Stax.  The Stax neighborhood is pretty rough.  Damn there's a lot of great music out of Memphis.

We're going to New Orleans in October after the Series to fish the fall redfish.  Monteleone it is.

fly.  We never actually catch fish because we fly fish.

Sort of like the Astros offense so far.

Ha. That's my preference as well. La in October is on my short list.  Report back after the trip. I'm sure it'll be awesome.

Best I can tell we go to the bottom of the 9th, Astros chasing a pair.

Winning run to the plate in the form of Beltran...two outs...

Not my favorite game of the season.  What do you do with Beltran in the playoffs?

Beltran swings at ball four, then makes an out. Gameday won't say how, they just end it.

He's your starting DH, like he has been all season.

Three hits...Bregman single, Yuli single, Bregman picked off to end the inning, then McCann homers to lead off the next.  That's it.  Against a team that's trying to lose as many games as possible.

Mrs. Hawk and I go to Eva's on Kuykendahl.  Best.  Fajitas.  Ever.

When I was staying in Spring, I was out driving with the guy who we were staying with and he stopped on Kuykendahl Rd and pointed to the road sign and said, how do you pronounce that?  Fuck it was a struggle, even after he said it I still need a half a dozen tries to get it right.  It was easier than Atchafalaya though.

Sure would be nice when the club decides to take a night off if they'd send out a Tweet about it or something.

It was an underwhelming game, indeed.  Thru about the 6th inning, I kept thinking that the bats were going to come alive then, from 7 on, I though, "oh, wait, I've seen this before".  I didn't even watch the 9th inning.

Edited to add:  I was impressed with Keuchel's adjustment from nibbling down in the first two innings to coming just a hair up to start getting strikes.

I grew up near the town of Thonotosassa, Florida.  Listen to the tourists pronounce that one for a while.

Well, I mean the tourists in the Tampa area, as it's right near the junction of I75 and I4, and there are signs everywhere.  But...there are some nice places along the river there, including some nice state parks.
