Got into the area today for the first time. Seeing a hooks game tonight and staying til Sunday. Anybody got any tips? Places to eat, beaches to go to?

The pizza at House of Rock is pretty great!

Great views of the coast from the second story of the Whataburger flagship

Port Aransas if you want a beach. Cool little town. A few good restaurants. If you want a meal in town in Water Street has pretty good seafood (a little overrated) downtown. It is casual. On the way to the beach is Snoopy's...it's on a pier. Not far from there is Dragonfly is a nice, small place that I really liked the one time I was there. The Yardarm is a small pretty solid seafood place on Ocean Drive. I think it is still open. I used to love Mama Mia's downtown (Italian) but people tell me it is slipping a little. He only takes cash so know that upfront. Blackbeards is another real casual seafood joint near the Lexington on North Beach.

We take a vacation to Port Aransas every fall.  Last year we discovered Avery's Kitchen, which has an awesome seafood buffet for lunch.  I don't remember the exact price but I think it was around $15/person - pretty decent value if you show up hungry and can hold down lots of fried fish/shrimp.

Seconded.  The place is an institution.  Also, Vietnam Restaurant just north on Water Street is excellent.  Order the "half bird" even if it's off the menu.

When I last lived in C.C. in the late '90s Vietnam was the best restaurant in town.

Funny,  I'm just wrapping up a fathers/sons fishing trip in Port A.
If you plan to go to the beach and want to drive/park on it, you'll need a beach permit (available at just about anywhere including the conceive store- Stripes- at the main beach access road).  The water was great today.

Eating in Port A:
Trout Street (eat outside and enjoy looking at the boats); chorizo crab cakes are awesome
Shells (this is the favorite place of my buddy who is a bit of a foodie; closed on Tuesdays)

I second those choices. Venetian Hot Plate is good Italian.
