Fun, not fun, Fun, Not fun, fun
« on: May 03, 2017, 01:52:04 am »
1st game of the season for me and the wife. Fun

Beers at 1820 to start.   Knowing most of you through posts and some in person (chuck) you'd all really enjoy 1820.

Get to the game and go check out the new CF area.  Maybe my expectations were way low, but they did a really good job out there.

Then Fiers gave up homer after homer after homer. Not fun

Moved to 109 and found some unused seats.  Of course right in front of a rangers family of 10.

Runs, Runs, Marwin grans salami.  Fun

Ranger family mostly leaves

Gregerson comes in and gags, Ranger family comes back. Not fun

Will Harris shuts their shithotles.  Fun.

Skipped food at the game and ubered to Keneallys for beer and pizza. More Fun

Speaking of fun.   I hope we aren't getting teased, cause this is 1998 Fun.

The redheaded former Astros writer was at Keneallys too, she says we need much better starting pitching.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Keneallys!!!! Oh man... I have so many important and great memories from that place from my college days at Rice. Glad to hear it's still there (I'm assuming) and doing well! I loved that pizza and I spent my 21st birthday at that bar being an absolute idiot. I really need to make a trip back to Houston. I miss it.

It sounds like you had a great night!

I met my wife at Keneallys, 16 years ago.   It is still going strong.  John Flowers, the owner, passed 2 years ago.   The pizza quality went down for awhile, but seems to be back now.   If you are in town and want some pints and pizza, I am always game.

I took my wife there on our second (possibly third) date a good 20 years ago now. Every time we can go back we make sure to go there. It's one of the places we reminisce about the most from Houston. It's been way too long since I've been back.... I may take you (and some others hopefully) up on that offer someday.

Please do.  I would totally be down with a OWA Keneallys gathering.

FWI, uber from Keneallys to Minute Maid is $9.

I did not know that.  Damn.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Your reference to 1998 touched something I have been thinking about, Navin. I will do a little research before posting my thoughts.

Man, I have not been to Keneally's in a LONG time...at least 20 or more years.  And all this talk about first dates... my wife and I's first was at the Richmond Arms, 24 years ago.  Sometimes I hate living out in the sticks.

Kenneally's is a favorite spot for me and my wife as well. We have been regularly stopping by for pizza and beers for many years, although the visits are far less frequent these days after the arrival of our first child. Tip to all: definitely don't sleep on the hand cut, freshly fried chips served with vinegar (note: actual thin potato chips, not the British conception of chips) before ordering a pizza.

Sad to hear about the passing of the owner. We definitely noticed the slip in quality, which seemed to be back on the upward swing during our last several visits. The minor renovations to the bar were also needed improvements (and nice to see money spent on the place rather than the unspoken sense of imminent razing for more townhouse/apartment that is always augured by a slow decay and lack of investment). Large, flat screen TVs replaced the small old box TVs, and the hanging racks above the U-shaped bar were removed to make it more open (and allow better views of the TVs). It's by no means a loud sports bar now (thankfully), but it's nice to have the option to catch the Astros there on a decent TV.

I'm a big fan of 1820.  It was there during a pre-game OWA meeting that batgirl and I first shared a drink.

This is a remarkably fun team.  A very good and deep lineup along with an above average and deep bullpen means they are in every game, but 12 come from behind victories out of their 18 wins (including overcoming three five run deficits) is incredible.

They've come from three or more runs behind almost as many times (5) as the games they've never trailed (6).

The updates in the bar area were far overdue.   After getting over the initial shock of not seeing that monstrosity that hung over the bar, you realize just what a waste that thing was.  The upgraded TVs make a world of difference too.    I do miss the 90s, when Flowers had a short lived all you can eat pizza during Rockets games, it was like $5, possibly the best deal in pub history.

Seeing as there is some keneallys nostalgia, would any of y'all be up for a keneallys meet up one weekend with to watch a road game?

I'd be up for it.
