Fiers starting the HR party early...Deshields with a lead off bomb
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

They missed the boat on getting a legit pitcher in return for Bregman.

That's what I was afraid of.  Truth be told, I was against it at the time anyway.

Altuve flies out F8...Gomez does his little hoppity hop, like he's going to gun someone out at the plate...even though the catch ended the inning

Bregman may still turn out to be a good player.  He's just not the linchpin in any deal anymore, unless it's for another Mike Fiers.

I think the White Sox would happily give up Jose Quintana in a package headlined by Bregman right now.

I just hope that he didn't get "fiers" tattooed on his right arm because he thinks its homophone is a metaphor for his fastball. He would be sadly mistaken.

What did he do wrong?  It was a great play to keep that ball from going into RF.

That was more of a "giving him a hard time" post because he lost sight of the ball.  Not a criticism.

I have no idea. I assume the Astros scouts/computers/whatever have a much better idea. Just pointing out that the guy that was rumored all damn winter to be an Astros trade target that they refused to trade Bregman (among others) for, has also gotten off to a slow start. In both their cases, it's one month.

Fiers, on the other hand, I'm ready to give up on. I was ready last summer.

I'd be inclined to leave Peacock and Devo in the relief roles they've excelled in. I mused in a TZ thread about converting Michael Feliz back to a starter. Of course, that might necessitate sending him down to Fresno to stretch out.

Of course. Quintana has been incredibly consistent year to year and is a much surer thing, IF he's healthy. But I wouldn't bet against Bregman getting it together. He's been a top player in high school, college, the minors, and as a rookie last year.

At this rate, that appears unlikely.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I'm thinking that long-shot money I put on Fiers winning the Cy Young might have been wasted.

Well it's almost too obvious right now to predict that Fiers, once he's released by the Astros, will sign a minor league deal with the Rangers, earn his way back up, and turn in 2-3 months with about a 2.50 ERA for them. But I'm doing it anyway.

Of course. Quintana has been incredibly consistent year to year and is a much surer thing, IF he's healthy. But I wouldn't bet against Bregman getting it together. He's been a top player in high school, college, the minors, and as a rookie last year.

Bregman will be fine. I'm not sure where this crap is coming from.

46% of Fiers' fly balls allowed have been homers. That shouldn't be humanly possible.

I wish a team would do what the Browns did for the Texans and Osweiler but for Sipp and Fiers.

Altuve just took one of the worst 2-0 swings I've ever seen. And then same on 2-1.

ETA: make that 3 in a row. Wow. He could not pick up or lay off that slider. That was 2007 Biggio-esque.

Looking at Baseball Reference, Cobb won the batting title 12 times total, 9 years in a row.  His highest average was the .420, and he only busted .400 one other time.  He won the triple crown once, in 1909, with 9 home runs.

You weakened your defense, the defense you usually switch to late in games, only to get the worst possible matchup at the plate.  Banister just abused Hinch in that match.

Rangers didn't seem overly concerned with allowing Correa to represent the go ahead run.

Haven't read the board yet. Is it just me or does Brownie sound like he is loving this? I know it's a sad situation but he sounds great.

Logged in to search for this...why is Brownie on, and what is the "sad situation"?  I came in late to the game and can't find anything online.

Root showed the stat that says in the 7th inning and later, with the Astros leading by one, tied, or behind with the tying run on deck, the Astros lead MLB in AVG, OBP, and SLG, by at least 50 points in all three categories.  That is insane.

Harris in.

If they tag him out or throw him out at 1B, no run scores.

I suppose it's possible he didn't realize it was strike three.

My question:
Gattis did not grab the ball and tag Gomez. The last out was Gattis taggin the base runner. If he had touched home before Gattis tags Gomez, does it count?

Not if they put Gomez out before he reaches 1B.  So if Gattis tags him or the throw to 1B to complete the strike out, game over no matter when the runner crossed the plate.

Right.  Rules specifically say that no run can score on a play where the third out is forced or the batter makes the third out before reaching 1B.

Ok, thanks. I have never seen that play before, and it made me unsure. No different than a ground ball to SS with a runner crossing the plate before the out is made. Gattis scared the crap out of me with the backhand stab because you KNEW Gomez was going to get sliders in the dirt.

I've seen it where the catcher tries to tag the runner instead of the batter.  I remember Benito Santiago doing it against the Astros many years ago.  Bases were loaded, full count so runners moving... third strike in the dirt which Santiago blocked.  But he grabbed the ball and panicked.  He tried to tag the runner coming home, not realizing that he could throw to 1B or more simply, just step on home plate because it's a force.  He missed and a run scored.

Agree re: Gattis.  He has a real issue reaching and not turning the mitt over and smothering.  But I'll have to say he made a nice block on a real tough pitch that bounced in front of the plate.  Balls that bounce that far out in front of you are a real bitch.

He has improved a lot from last year to this.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I was at Pinthouse enjoying a cold beer and watching the game. They have trivia on Tuesday nights. I yelled STAY FUCKING FAIR so loudly it stopped trivia for almost a minute when Marwin turned on that ball.

I held my breath from the moment it hit his bat til it stayed fair. Then I lost my voice screaming and probably scared the neighbors

First.. wow what a win!

As I'm catching up with what went down tonight I caught the post game interview with Bannister. First thing he brings up (and maybe I saw the wrong clip because this seems bizarre) is last night's pitch behind Napoli. He says clearly that it was "behind his head".  No it wasn't. It was behind his butt/lower back. We can talk about what it means to throw behind someone but I'm not digging the rewriting of history so that he can make a bigger deal out of this than it is. He's going to make this much worse before it gets better.

Are you saying Banny (yes, that's what they call him in Rangerland and I use it because it is so insipid) was carping about the McCullers pitch after Tuesday's game? Is so that really got in their heads.

I went back to the MLB videos. Last night they must have had a Monday night interview stuck in with the Tuesday night videos. The interview is now about last night's game. Still, if BannyWanny insists that the pitch was behind Napoli's  head when it wasn't, he's making things worse unnecessarily. .

They all are.  I'm assuming this interview was translated through google translate several times, otherwise Gomez barely speaks understandable English.

I never hated Gomez but I never respected him either. Gomez is blessed with a great skill set and cursed with an infantile mind. He is a shinning example of mediocrity. He is the great underachiever. Never lived up to his promise or hype. I wanted to see him succeed when he was with the Astros but he failed miserably, so I was fine with him being let go.

In both games, it looked like Gomez was getting bad breaks on balls hit in his direction. He was breaking the wrong way or breaking late. He doesn't look like the same outfielder to me.

He wasn't that good an OFer in Houston either.

I remember him being decent in his short 2015 stint, but the wheels came off in 2016.
