Looks as if Whitley makes his MWL debut on Monday night at Peoria in QC's 5th game of the season. Hector Perez gets the starting nod in the opener tomorrow night at home with Carson LaRue, Brett Adcock and Tyler Britton going in games 2-4.

ETA:
Jorge Alcala, Dustin Hunt and Ryan Hartman are the remaining members of the 8-man modified tandem starting staff to start the season according to this QC Times article (in which manager Russ Steinhorn is also quoted saying Daz Cameron had a "very impressive" spring).

Off to a better start to his career than Mark Appel, at least.

Wholesale roster changes today:

  • SS Anibal Sierra moved up to Buies Creek
  • OF Marcos Almonte up from EST in his first exposure to FS ball
  • RHP Tyler Britton to 7-day DL
  • RHP Lucas Williams (40th-rounder, 2016) up from EST in what is also his first FS exposure
  • RHP Edgardo Sandoval taken off active roster
  • RHP Enoli Paredes activated from EST (21 years old but only previous experience was in the GCL so a large jump for him)

Nice game for Jake Rogers: single, double and HR while throwing out two would-be basestealers. The Canyon High School alum has now thrown out 5 of 8 on the basepaths in the young season.

I should have been clearer because I knew someone might confuse the two--Rogers went to the Canyon High in the panhandle while Berkman of course went to the New Braunfels' one.

In what I'm guessing is a short-term move, OF Carmen Benedetti gets sent to EST. Coming the other direction is C/INF Ray Henderson (22nd rounder, 2016). Henderson played 26 games at Greeneville last season after being drafted.

My wild ass speculation of the week.  When Benedetti was drafted he was announced as a pitcher.  Of course he hasn't pitched.  Could be the hitting experiment has run its course and he's now converting to pitcher.  In which case he'll be there for a while. [/wild ass speculation]

While moving (back) to the mound certainly isn't far-fetched (particularly since he's a lefty), the timing seems extremely odd. Wouldn't they just have held him back in EST from the start and begin the conversion? Seems strange that they'd try it just 10 days into a season in which he certainly hadn't got off to a slow start at the plate. 55 games (between this year and last) isn't much of a gauge but really the only thing you can fault him for bat-wise is the lack of pop.

While lots could have happened in 6 months, this article from last October (which would have been post fall instructional league) certainly gives no hint of a move to the hill.

Jake Rogers does it again behind the plate... Blocks a ball in the dirt and pegs a runner trying to take third.

Now 8 for 13 in throwing out baserunners this year.

Also has hit a HR tonight, his 3rd this season in 14 games.

Offsetting moves were RHP Derick Velazquez and LHP Ryan Hartman being de-activated.

In a game delayed by rain, Forrest Whitley tossed 48 pitches tonight after throwing 82 pitches in his first outing.

Daz Cameron w/the big night: single/triple/homer and 7 RBIs. FWIW, 12 of his 17 RBIs and 3 of his 4 longballs have come in just 2 games (both on the road).

Not a pretty line, but understandable given the gigantic amount of rust involved: 2 2/3 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 7 ER, 2 K. 60 pitches. According to the game log, he retired the first 6 men in order before completely unravelling in the 3rd.

Wow. There's not exactly a lot in his pro resume to suggest he can keep up anything resembling that production, but it's still a nice run.

Another not-so-good performance for him: allowed QC 3 runs on 4 walks and 4 hits over 5 IP.

On the flipside, Cionel Perez was outstanding in his 2nd outing: 5/2/0/0/1/7.

In a game delayed by rain, Forrest Whitley tossed 48 pitches tonight after throwing 82 pitches in his first outing.

Goes 52 pitches in tonight's slightly schizo outing--all 6 outs he recorded were via strikeout but he also allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (including a double and a homer). 5 of the last 6 batters he faced were retired (sandwiched in there was an infield single).

19 Ks vs 2 BBs in his 10 IP thus far.

    Roster additions/relegations (all involving pitchers):
    • Reggie Johnson de-activated.
    • Edgardo Sandoval placed on 7-day DL.
    • Ronel Blanco moves down from BC after making one appearance there.
    • Kevin Hill is activated out of EST for the first time. The righty pitched at TRC last year after being drafted in the 25th round out of South Alabama.

    • RHP Tyler Britton to 7-day DL

Offsetting moves were RHP Derick Velazquez and LHP Ryan Hartman being de-activated.

Both Britton and Velazquez retired today. Velazquez not surprising given the injury history. Britton is a little more odd, given that he was just drafted last year (23rd round) and had considerable success given the 63 whiffs in 41 innings after being drafted.

What was Britton's injury this year?  Maybe more serious than we had heard??

    Lotsa movement:
    • C Jake Rogers promoted to BC.
    • 3B Randy Cesar also moves up to BC.
    • 1B Spencer Johnson with the move to BC as well.
    • INF Osvaldo Duarte demoted from BC.
    • INF Wander Franco activated out of EST.
    • 1B Yordan Alvarez also activated out of EST.
    • RHP Carson LaRue activated (and pitched today).
    • LHP Ryan Hartman de-activated.

Alvarez is of course the Cuban player the Dodgers effectively signed for $4MM (inclusive of tax) and then flipped to the Astros last year for Josh Fields. He spent some brief time last year in the DSL after last playing competitively in 2014 in the CNS.

Franco was signed by the Astros for $575K back in 2013. He played in just 38 games last season in time split between Greeneville and the GCL.

Alvarez and Franco both played in today's matinee game for QC. Alvarez went 0-3 with 2 whiffs, Franco 0-4 with 2 Ks as well.

QC Times profile of 22-year old 5'8" switch-hitting Panamanian infielder Rodrigo Ayarza. Off to a nice start at the plate at .337/.356/.579 with just 9 Ks in 95 ABs (but as the OBP suggests only 2 walks as well). Has made 9 errors in 25 games at 2B/3B/SS.

Brother Max played 3 years in the Astros organization from 2009-2011 (DSL and GCL).

RHP Jorge Alcala promoted to BC (and I'm guessing may see some action for them tonight).

Taking his spot on the QC roster out of EST is RHP Carlos Sanabria. The 20-year old from Venezuela split time last season between Greeneville and TRC where he rang up 57 Ks vs 15 BBs in 63 IP.

With Arauz getting activated and assigned to QC after the suspension, infielders Alex De Goti and Rodrigo Ayarza both get bumped up to BC.

The other offsetting move was RHP Yohan Ramirez being assigned to the RBs after pitching in 3 previous games at BC and CC.

    ETA:
LHP Ryan Hartman also promoted to BC (but since he had been de-activated back on the 26th no offsetting move necessary).

Ramirez de-activated as C Gabriel Bracamonte gets activated for the first time out of EST. Signed for a $7500 bonus back in 2014 out of Venezuela, Bracamonte has played in just 61 games over 3 seasons. Last year he saw action for Greeneville and Tri-City.

Osvaldo Duarte and Carmen Benedetti both to the 7-day DL. Taking their roster spots are 3B Tyler Wolfe and OF Bryan de la Cruz, both up from EST. De la Cruz is seeing his first action of 2017. Out of the Dominican, he signed for $170K back in 2013 and last year split time between the G-stros and V-Cats. Wolfe had previously filled in last month at CC.

QC Times profile of Josh Rojas, who's got 4 home runs in his first 10 games as a pro (after hitting just 5 in 95 games for the U of Hawaii):

“I’ve only been in the organization for a couple of weeks, but I have learned so much already. Working with (Quad-Cities hitting coach Ben) Rosenthal and with (Astros minor league hitting instructor Ralph) Dickenson. Just the little adjustments that they have encouraged me to make are making a difference. I feel like I’ve learned as much over the past month as I did in any season in college or before. The knowledge they have and the technology that is available to help us is pretty incredible. It’s been eye opening for me.’’

Carson LaRue and his 2.84 ERA ranks 8th in the MWL while his 0.96 WHIP ranks 4th.

I think his picture is in the dictionary next to the word "coachable".

Meant to post this last night when I saw it but forgot:

QC River Bandits‏Verified account @QCRiverBandits  15 hours ago
END 3 | 1-1 | Yohan Ramirez strikes out a pair in his second straight 1-2-3 inning. 99 MPH called strike three ends the inning.

Even the unheralded guys throw extreme heat these days.

22-year old Dominican righty (listed at 6'4" 190 lbs) was only signed last year. Has just 79 professional innings under his belt (and walks a ton--40 BBs during that time).

    • RHP Christian Javier, with 33 Ks vs 12 BBs in 22 IP this season, moves up from TRC.
    • RHP Abdiel Saldana off the inactive list.
    • RHP Gabriel Valdez to the DL.
    • C/INF/OF Ray Henderson off the DL.

The RBs evidently thought were playing in Vegas, too. Among the multitude of hitting heroes, Josh Rojas goes 4-5 with a double and 2 homers. He know has 7 homers in 15 games since being drafted.

On the flip side, Carson LaRue with another nice outing. 79 Ks vs 24 BBs in 87.1 IP with a 2.68 ERA (now 7th in the MWL) and 0.95 WHIP (4th).

Great to see Daz finally having some success
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

20-year old Québécois Abraham Toro homered tonight in his first MWL at-bat. The switch-hitter now has 7 longballs in 32 games this year after hitting 0 in 44 games last year in his pro debut.

If he makes it to the show I hope he's a "last name" guy. Because spelling that first name in the GZ 15-20 times a night could be an issue.

The longball by Chuckie Robinson today is the 115th of the year for the Bandits, breaking the team record for most HRs in a season. The prior high of 114 was set back in 2010 when QC was a Cardinals' affiliate.

Should be a great day for baseball with temps approaching 80 here in Iowa.
