What talk shows do you guys prefer for baseball talk? I listen to 790 sometimes. Charlie Pallilo is pretty entertaining. I haven't listened to 610 in a while, when I did listen it was mostly football.

I used to listen to 610 in the  morning when they had Nick Wright. He was one obnoxious prick, but damn if that guy didn't know sports. John Lopez is, and will always be, a sports moron. Without Wright, they have no legitimate sports knowledge. I listen to the Matt and Lance, the "Proper Gentleman" now. Neither are as smart or informed as Wright, but they've apparently watched a baseball/football/basketball/soccer/tiddlywinks what have you game before. So they're miles ahead of the idiots left on 610.

Nick Wright went to Los Angeles for a Fox Sports TV gig.

And agree about Palillo.  He's a pompous, condescending ass, but he does seem to not despise the game of baseball, which is rare for Houston radio guys.

Yeah, there are all sorts of better baseball talk out there than either 610 or 790.  I like to listen to local radio because it's ostensibly Houston focused.  That doesn't mean they're good at it, however.

In Dallas we have a top-rated sports station self-identified as The Ticket. Sports take a secondary position to fart and boob jokes. The best reason to listen is a talented comic on the morning show that does great Jerry Jones impressions. Seriously. Did I mention it gets good ratings?

That's kind of like 610s 3 stooges in the afternoon drive time.  Sports is the last thing on their mind.  Which wouldn't even be so bad if they weren't a) seriously unfunny, and b) obnoxious assholes.

Effectively wild is good. Espn's Baseball Tonight is a good way to get a quick update on the games from the previous night. The Ringer's MLB Podcast is starting to develop nicely.

Not Radio, but since the Astros haven't been on cable in Austin in years, cable customers are relegated to watching MLB tonight for Astros live look-ins.   I actually enjoy that program much more than Baseball Tonight now.   They usually are pro-Astros too, especially the host Greg Amsinger.  Greg makes you feel at times that he's an Astros fan (in a similar way that Houston's Robert Flores does on ESPN), even though he's from Missouri, went to school in Indiana, and lives in NYC. 

The one thing he did that made me realize he wasn't from Houston was continuously mispronounce Craig Biggio's last name at his Hall of Fame induction.  But most people get Bidge's name wrong.  Stupid Chris Berman "matinee at the Biggio" nickname.

I don't know if I'm better informed, but I'm no doubt happier by avoiding talk radio AND the advanced metrics craze.  More power to you guys who enjoy quantifying everything, but I just like to watch and trust my lyin' eyes.

Granato and Lance Z were entertaining many years ago, they talked baseball all the time (there was no football team then).

Good call by you.   Listening to a know-nothing Rod Babers who does zero show-prep is annoying, even if he's one of the few Houston pro sports fans on in Austin.   And even more annoying is the other station, with an Aggie who kisses Longhorn fans asses in order to stay employed in the city.

Babers is a pretty sharp guy. And a good one. He just seems to get really hyper on air. And he is far, far from the worst personality on Austin airwaves. Damning with faint praise, I know. Then again I don't really listen to any of them. I do enjoy MLB XM.

He was getting killed in the ratings actually discussing sports.  "Sports radio" these days is really "guy talk radio" for the 20-45 male demographic.  Of the 15-20 hours per week those afternoon idiots at 610 are on the air, they spend about an hour talking about sports and the rest of the time discussing gambling, the women they've had sex with, and making fun of old people and disabled kids.  They play to the steroid and vomit, barbed-wire tattoo crowd whose attention span is that of cocker spaniel.  I guess 790 wanted more of that. They got it in Josh Innes.

Yeah you're right, Charlie was all sports. That's the only reason why I listen to a sports radio station. It sucks that sports radio has come to what these guys talk about all day. I don't understand how people could listen to those three on The Triple Threat or whatever it's called, they're so stupid.

That's why I could stand guys like Pallilo and Nick Wright.  They knew sports.  Pallilo was the one guy in town who actually liked talking baseball.  But these other idiots...no thanks.

Innes represents everything wrong with sports radio.  I have no use for him.  Charlie has forgotten more than Innes will ever know.  Charlie was arrogant, but he was on point.  Innes is basically a 5-year old with a microphone.
