Gattis

Gattis is now clean shaven and I don't even know what's real any more.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Hopefully it's a sign that this silly hipster trend is over, and facial hair can get back to us fat guys and our goatees.

You really couldn't understand that comment?

the boys are growing up = them getting married.
maybe to a probably = the fiancee probably did weigh in.

As a backup? Sure, give it a shot.

Isn't he just the emergency option?  In other words, will he really be donning the tools?

There's speculation that if he can catch they'll send Kratz down and use Gattis as a backup to get him in more lineups without having to take out White or Tucker, but I think Hinch has sounded pretty skeptical about Gattis behind the plate.

Not to change the subject from his beard and who he looks like, what are the Astros going to do with him?  With Tucker hitting really well, are the Astros going to platoon Gattis and Tucker with Gattis only facing left-handers?  Do you sit Tucker and just give him occassion starts at DH, LF, and 1B?

From everything I've read they will be grooming him into the backup catcher over the next several weeks.  Bringing him into a game here and there.  I think he likely DHs against all lefties.  And a few DH starts against righthanders.  On days he doesn't start against righthanders, as soon as Tucker faces a lefty, Gattis is in (and likely not the other way around)  Days he doesn't start he most certainly will pinch hit and in some games maybe pinch hit and play a few innings at catcher.  If his short stints at catcher go well, Kratz is gone.

ETA
It's a SSS but Gattis has done really well pinch hitting (321/424/821 in 33 plate appearances).  So games he doesn't start he could be a factor

Where have you read this?

I trust the brass to do the right thing, but I'll believe it when I see it.  I've never been under the impression that Gattis was viewed as a legit backup, especially with Hinch as the manager.  Did he even get any reps behind the plate at CC?

Gattis activated off disabled list

Quote
"It will be nice to get him back," Hinch said. "His presence will be good for us. It makes us closer to full strength. ... We're going to continue the catching development program and keep that alive.
"He won't catch tomorrow, but he's going to continue to do his drills. His presence, his ability to impact games, he can put a point on the board any given swing. Where he fits in our lineup, how often he fits in our lineup, what position he plays is all going to be determined, but he makes our team better."

Gattis likely to return during series vs. KC

Quote
Hinch said Gattis will do extra catching work on the side and will eventually get into a game as a catcher.
"I want to keep that alive, and the most difficult decision we have is there's not enough time to build him up as a catcher without sacrificing at-bats in the big leagues for him," Hinch said. "Balancing that, how much can he contribute on offense and how much he changes our lineup versus building him up as a catcher and reintroducing that, that's a big challenge and that is one of the issues with the timing of the injury."

He needs ABs.  It's going to take some time.  Yes, he was completely overwhelmed last night, but he's never going to get his stroke back without getting some real work in.  It sucks that last night was a woulda/coulda/shoulda win, and Gattis's night was part of the problem.  But you gotta suck it up and get him some ABs, the earlier the better.

Well, it included AA sliders, I suppose. The minor leagues have minor sliders.  It's going to take some big league at bats. Hopefully not a month's worth.

Howard in Memorial said that the Astros should have sent Gattis to AAA rather than AA for rehab so he would've faced more challenging competition. So that must be it. Of course, Howard in Memorial also said the Astros should trade Springer in a package to get a better catcher.

Hinch felt comfortable enough with Gattis catching to burn both Castro and Kratz tonight. Gattis would have caught had the game gone into extra innings.

AAA.  Where all of their games have been on the road.  Not a great way to do rehab.  Plus 3 of their first 5 games were rained out.

Evan Gattis out with Hinch again today doing more intense catching work. It's clear they want him back there soon.
