Belmont University teammates C/1B Jamie Ritchie and OF Drew Ferguson reunited again (though they might have been on the QC roster at the same time for a couple days last year).

Interested to see how OF Alejandro Garcia does at Lancaster. One of last year's Cuban signees ($750K was his signing bonus), the Astros stuck him in the DSL last year for 14 games simply to shake the rust off after having last played in the Cuban National Series back in 2012. Now we'll see how he does in a somewhat more age-appropriate league (he turns 25 in July).

Who are the top couple players to be paying attention to at Lancaster?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Not a whole lot of top prospect talent on the JetHawks right now. Best of the bunch is unquestionably Riley Ferrell, the former TCU closer and last year's 3rd round pick who's off to great start this year. Not out of the question you could see him in the Astros' bullpen by the end of the year.

Big dropoff after Ferrell. OF Jason Martin is a kid who could still break out. Only 20 and like Ferrell is off to a good start with Lancaster.

After putting up an 0.80 WHIP and 1.93 ERA in 4 games for the Bandits, 21-year old Cuban pitcher Rogelio Armenteros has been promoted to the JetHawks from QC.

Also, INF Luis Reynoso (spent 2015 at QC) has been activated out of EST. INF Jose Fernandez went to the DL.

Speed, no pop (from today's game notes):

Quote
The JetHawks lead the league with 46 stolen bases...OF Bobby Boyd is tied for the league lead with 11 steals on the season.

Lancaster hitters totaled 6 home runs in the season's opening month...the total is the franchise's lowest for a single month since monthly stats started being kept in 2005...the previous low total was 15 in April of 2010 and 2005.

On the pitching side, Trent Thornton ranks 5th in the Cal League with an 0.89 WHIP.

Wow. 6 team HR in one month. So, that means if you adjust for the league and ballpark, they've actually hit like, negative-4 homers or something, right?

Del Rosario back to EST as RHP Andrew Walter was activated from the DL. Walter hasn't pitched yet this season but spent time with the JetHawks last season after serving a 50-game suspension for a "drug of abuse". Signed in 2011 as a NDFA out of Yavapai juco.

Actually, Walter has pitched in one game this year for Lancaster. The game was started on 4/8 and is currently suspended due to rain.  Walter started the game and had a line of 3.2IP 1H 1ER 3BB 6K.

The next Tyler White?
He has a better glove than White, but I would not expect him to match White's offense numbers.  A quick comparison at level:

Class A
White (23; 2014) 71 G, 290 AB, 20 2b, 7 HR, 35 BB, 40 K, .305/.414/.485
Tanielu (22; 2015) 110 G, 419 AB, 27 2b, 6 HR, 30 BB, 65 K, .308/.354/.434

Class A+
White (23; 2014) 43 G, 186 AB, 13 2b, 8 HR, 28 BB, 27 K, .267/.403/.527
Tanielu (23; 2016) 21 G, 80 AB, 6 2b, 2 HR, 5 BB, 13 K, .300/.345/.475

I think the K-rate, K:BB ratio and HR rate are most telling.

JetHawk teammate Dean Deetz played with Laureano at NEO and came in the same draft (11th round).

(BTW, many moons ago former Pirates and Angels 2B Johnny Ray played at NEO before moving on to the U of Arkansas and later getting picked by the Astros in the 12th round of the 1979 draft.)

According to the CL transactions page, RHP Ryan Deemes has been promoted from QC. Last year's 36th round pick has been terrific out of the pen this season for the River Bandits (0.87 ERA and 0.73 WHIP) after putting up excellent numbers last year in SS ball.

Dunno--just saw it listed on the transactions page. If it were PEDs/drugs of abuse, there would have been some sort of public announcement. So if I were to guess I'd say it was some sort of violation of team rules.

Good grief, the heretofore weak-hitting J-Hawks have scored 19 runs thru the first 4 innings tonight. As you would suspect, the usual gale (28 mph) is blowing to RF at The Hangar.

I'm probably gonna jinx him but more impressive to me is that Rogelio Armenteros has managed to hold Lake Elsinore scoreless thus far.

ETA:

Armenteros with the very, very fine outing tonight: 6 IP 4 H 0 R 0 BB 9 K.

OF Bobby Boyd (8th rounder the year before out of West Virginia) hitting .415 (17-41) in his 9-gamer.

RHP Josh James (34th round out of juco Western Okla State in 2014) has whiffed 25 and walked just 3 over his last 17 innings while giving up only 10 hits.

In an otherwise dreary night at hitter heaven High Desert, in their Cally debuts the pair combined for 2 of the JetHawks measly 3 hits. Both got their hits in their very first ABs.

Also Garrett Stubbs had his 16-game hit streak snapped in the game.

RHP Josh James (34th round out of juco Western Okla State in 2014) has whiffed 25 and walked just 3 over his last 17 innings while giving up only 10 hits.

Now has K'd 45 his last 36 IP with an 0.97 WHIP.

His slider is a plus pitch.  Could be a potential bull pen arm if he continues to develop.

Sent back to Tri-City today with no game appearances in his first trip to full-season ball.

A scouting report from that 2080 website (no video unfortunately) on Josh James' performance on Tuesday where he whiffed 11 and walked just 1 over 6 IP.

And a more positive one on Jason Martin (scroll about halfway down the page).

Also, here's a blurb from Wilson Karaman of BP in a chat re Rogelio Armenteros:

"...one of the most enjoyable arms in the Cal this year. Three potentially above-average pitches, mixes the hell out of 'em, adds and subtracts, manipulates his secondaries. He's a kitchen sinker. He's a wider range guy, as he's shown three different velo bands for his heater in the three starts, and I set the realistic at 45. It's a starter's arsenal though, and I think he'll pitch in that role in the big leagues. I should have mentioned Cuban deep arsenal guys in my "favorite type of prospect" answer, that was a fail."

Another scouting report from the 2080 website, this one on Garrett Stubbs.

FWIW, gets good marks on the defensive side.

And scouting reports on Trent Thornton, Kevin Comer, Bryan Muniz and Bobby Boyd as well.

Ritchie comes off the DL with a bang, hitting 2 homers tonight.

Other roster moves: Woodward goes to DL along with 3B Luis Reynoso and RHP Yeyfry del Rosario, Akeem Bostick activated after those 2 rehab starts in TRC.

Wild numbers for Jacob Dorris (NDFA, 2015) since being called up to the JetHawks: 54 whiffs in 32 IP but also 19 walks, 9 plunks and 3 wild pitches.

Sidearming righty and the splits reflect it: 1.10 WHIP vs RHBs, 1.52 WHIP vs LHBs.

Ramon Laureano had a PH 2-run double in the T9 that turned out to be the game-winner. Then swiped third (#32) and later scored in the inning.

Jason Schwartz ‏@jasondschwartz  10 minutes ago
The double extends Laureano's hit streak to 12. Hitting .489 (22x45) with 4 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR and 17 RBI during the streak.

Ramon Laureano looking like a man in need of new challenges. Now hitting .519 (27-52) over his last 14 games. 1st in the league in OBP (.426), 1st in OPS (.950), 3rd in BA (.321), 4th in slugging (.524), tied for 1st in SBs (33).

And a .294/.403/.464 line away from The Hangar puts a more legitimate sheen on it.

Yes, it is high A ball and he is very young.  Average age for position players in Cal League is 23.1.  Tucker won't turn 20 until January.  He will be one of the youngest players in the league.

Jose Hernandez with 7 scoreless at The Hanger tonight and now has tossed blanks over his last 14 IP. Wilson Karaman of BP with a mini-scouting report via twitter tonight:

Wilson Karaman ‏@vocaljavelins  46 minutes ago Lancaster, CA
Astros Jose Hernandez showing impressive tempo & pitchability. Dictating pace, keeping hitters off-balance. Fluid, repeats, quality strikes. Hernandez working above barrels with an 89-91 FB, hitters not seeing it, late in spite of velo. Straight CH 81, SL 82-4 both subtle. Occasional CB 73-74 to steal strikes early. Quality outing thru 5, carving up RC.

Interesting tweet:
Quote
In 2014 I predicted we'd have at least 10 MLB players from our @JetHawks team. We're at 9 right now. I'm trusting your source @brianmctaggart

No idea if 9 is a lot.  I could only come up with 8:
Correa, Kemp, Teo, White, McCullers, Devenski, Velasquez, Minaya

Almost certain to add to that list are:
Hader, Phillips, and Ruiz.

And then there is Appel.

Other possibilities are Kemmer and Hauschild

In comparison, I only spotted 4 from 2009.  5 if you count Johnson's rehab stint.

5 in 2010

Only see 4 in 2011, and 4 in 2012...and 8 in 2013

So yeah, 2014 could have an insane 12-13 major leaguers.  And who would have thought back in 2014 that 12 players from Lancaster would make the majors and Appel might not be one of them.  Though he will likely sniff the majors before he is done
