Favorite moment of 2015
« on: October 15, 2015, 10:38:41 pm »
We all agree, this has been a fun season of Astros baseball. What was your personal favorite moment/game/series/play of the 2015?

For me you have to look back all the way to April. It was a Sunday in Arlington with Dallas Keuchel on the mound against the Rangers. Keuchel was cruising through 6 scoreless innings, with a 4-0 lead. He got in some trouble in 7th and gave up 2 runs, couldn't find the strike zone if I recall correctly. Neshek, Thatcher, and Qualls combined surrendered 2 more in the 8th to tie the game at 4. Sipp had a scoreless 9th but got in big trouble in the 10th. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Leonys Martin steps up for the Rangers. He blisters one to right field, it's deep, Springer is racing back, he leaps at the wall, he caught it! Game stays tied!
Fast forward to the 14th inning, Hank Conger steps up with a runner on and hits an oppo lazer shot to left field! 6-4 Astros! Bot 14 who comes on to save it? Sam Deduno(seriously) he closes it out Astros win!

The reason this game and Springer's play in particular stands out for me is that I was at that game. I had a great time watching the ranger fans get so excited when Martin connected and so depressed when Springer came down with it.

Another interesting note, that day on the way home from the game, I was jazzed up about Astros baseball, I stumbled across a forum on tapatalk called orangewhoopass.

If I have to pick just a moment, I would take Castro walking it off against the Angels in July.  Scoreless game, bottom of the 9th, Castro had just swung and missed badly on two pitches right down the middle.  And then... bat flip.

Honorable mention goes to the 8-1 west coast road trip early in the season where they bludgeoned their opponents into submission.

Mine is Lowrie's homer to cap the miracle comeback off Street in Anaheim.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Lots of big plays and moments this year.  Lowre's HR, Springer's catch in Arlington... But I think my favorite was Gattis's 2-run tomahawk double in the 9th in Oakland back in April.  It cemented just how resilient this team could be and how they were different than teams the last few years.

Correct me if I'm wrong but was that the at bat he fouled of 2 or 3 high pitches before doing so?

The roar of the crowd when Castro doubled home two runs in Game 3 of the ALDS.  That was the sensation of baseball being fully back in Houston.

I watched Fiers's no-hitter late at night after teaching, in a sentimental mood and with not a few beers. That was probably it for me.

The Gattis double--that was the one at his eyes or a bit higher, no? That was insane.

This. I felt so fortunate to be there too.

The Springer catch game in Arlington is high on my list as well. The radio broadcast kept me distracted through an all day yard clean up session.

My favorite is biased by being in attendance, but Neshek coming in to strike out Mike Trout in the eighth, followed by Castro's walk-off homer in the ninth to cap a sweep of the Angels.

so many to choose from....

- Springer's rob in Arlington
- Early west coast road trip catapulting the season
- That stretch of walk-offs over like a 2 week period
- Keuchel...all year long
- Correa
- Fiers no hitter
- Lowrie grand slam in front of a sellout crowd
- Lowrie 3-run bomb in miracle comeback
- Carter's 3-run bomb/Go Go doubling up the runner at first to beat Seattle
- Rasmus being Beltran in October
- Go Go bat flip in Yankee Stadium
- Castro's RBI in Game 3
- Keuchel striking out Cain to end the inning in Game 3

Oh and I guess Biggio HOF

Easily the most fun year of Astros I have ever enjoyed.  The team was impossible not to like.

My favorite part was planning to go to game 3 with my uncle, even though it didn't happen.

I think mine was Marisnick's catch on Tal's Hill back in early May against Seattle.  I must have watched that clip 50 times.

i'm so glad Tal's Hill will be back next year.

For me it has to be the Springer catch, with Lowrie's HR against the Angels a close #2

Also, the emergence of the Congerbot.  I hope he sticks around just for that.  I don't mind keeping 3 catchers.

BTW...the game thread for the no-no is pinned in the GZ, should anyone want to read or re-read it.

Seems like a lot of great moments have been mentioned, but I'll add the postgame shitshow after G162 to the list. That was great TV.

I was not impressed with Conger, but maybe his framing abilities rubbed off on Castro who was a huge improvement defensively this year.

Let's hope not.  Despite his reputation, Conger is terrible at framing pitches.  I'm not sure why people think otherwise.

That's about all I heard about him when the trade was made.  It's still a head scratcher.  Still, Congerbot was awesome.

Is Stassi capable?  He looked good in the brief playing time he got.

Luhnow seems to like him. He looked fine defensively from what little I saw of him.

I just wonder if he has the ability to hit major league pitching, but then again, Castro isn't a very good hitter either.

Like Phil, mine's biased by being at the game, but the Lowrie slam is my favorite moment. The club had done nothing all game against the Twins and May, who looked like he was on his way to a CG. The boys finally started piecing some hits together and Lowrie (who was coming off a miserable August after missing two full months) was not the hitter I wanted up at that point. My wife and kids had gone off to Squeeze Play, so they were oblivious to Lowrie defying my expectations and parking one two sections over from our seats. But, hey, at least they got bobble heads of Orbit dressed as a Jedi.
