Castro ole'ing that curve in the dirt cost the team a run.  I was surprised to see him starting today with Kershaw on the mound, especially when considering day game after night game.

I'm glad Kike didn't get any lift on that one.

Same song, second verse. Two wild pitches, a little bit worse.

Carter crushes a 2 out double off the foul line on the LF wall.  Marisnick bounces out to the pitcher.  End 5.

Castro has give the Dodgers both of their runs. That's unacceptable.

The effort in the first was simply lazy.  At least he got his glove down and shoulders up on the second run that the battery has gifted the Dodgers.

Three up, three down for McCullers in top 6 (Utley, Turner, Gonzalez).  He's around 75 pitches.  Gonzalez went down swinging.

Bottom 6:
Castro - backwards K
Altuve - takes a fastball the other way down the RF line for a double (3-3 on the day)
Gomez - singles to left.  Altuve holds at 3rd after having to wait for ball to clear infield on the left side.
Correa - ground ball up the middle, ricochets off Kershaw's foot.  Altuve scores.  Everyone safe.
Lowrie - flies out to right. Two down. Gomez tags and advances to third.  Pretty close play due to strong throw by Puig.  Good thing Gomez made it.
Gattis - 2-1 count when Gomez tried to steal home and is gunned down.

2-1 Dodgers after 6.  Gomez wants a review.

Correa was incredible that inning. Slapping  the outside pitch to RF then stealing second. I remember when we were hearing in Spring Training from people saying he was the best player on the field.  Well, there you go.

I feel like it is worth highlighting that it was the shift that just saved the go ahead run, as it seems people (one in particular on these boards) only mention the shift when it gives up a hit.  My feeling watching this year is that it has been a significant overall benefit.
Yay.

Your original post was unlike a smart baseball fan like I know you are. He boxed the first  one for sure, but on one of the other two, McC crossed him up, and the other one was very tough.

I was watching the WTBS feed, and I agree with you. Castro ole'd the first one-terrible technique, but the last two were not his fault. McCullers' yakker has so much spin on it that I'd have been surprised if Castro had blocked them.

I was watching the WTBS feed, and I agree with you. Castro ole'd the first one-terrible technique, but the last two were not his fault. McCullers' yakker has so much spin on it that I'd have been surprised if Castro had blocked them.
I did not see the pitch in question (nor any of the game), but should Castro also be cut some slack considering it's late August and he was catching a day game after a night game?

The first inning botch was a classic ole. Sorry, no slack from this quarter. He's got to make that play.

I didn't see either pitch, but 1) it doesn't surprise me that Castro boxed one, and 2) no, he shouldn't get a pass because it's late in the season.  He's a professional.  It's the pennant race.  You gotta make plays.

the second one was a clear crossup. he was raising his glove for the FB when it broke down. the third one was nasty. HH in his prime would have had difficulty with it.

Is the third one the one on which Ellis scored?  If so, I saw the replay on that.  That was a tough one.  Couldn't find a replay of the others.

I thought HH was always in his prime.  I didn't see the first, but watched the second and third a couple of times.  I wasn't sure that the third wasn't a cross up as well.  Castro didn't seem ready for the curve that time either.  McCullers didn't seem happy with Castro either time, so I couldn't understand how they could have gotten so out of sync.

On the one that scored the run...third?...it looked like the ball hit the plate.  Castro had the glove down, but it took a hard hop to his left.

In addition to driving in the tying run, Gonzalez was involved in another significant play.  Ethier led off the second inning with a line drive over third that caromed off the wall in foul territory. Martin raced in, bare handed the ball and threw a strike to Altuve nipping Ethier at second. Puig followed with a single. If not for Marwin's play, McCullers would have been in deep trouble on the edge of losing control of the game. Versatility of course is the hallmark of Marwin's game, but it is his extraordinary baseball sense that sets him apart and makes him so valuable.

Hershiser made the point that an outfielder would have caught the ball with his glove and then made the throw, losing any opportunity for the out. Marwin played the ball like a third baseman fielding a bunt.

if so, McCullers is an idiot.

yep.

the first one was a too casual attempt at a backhand on his glove side instead of moving and blocking.

McCullers may also just have been unhappy, which was perfectly understandable.  It was impossible to tell.

That's probably the better read.

I loved the way Marwin played that.
