So the wife finally convinced me to sign up for Twitter.  I'm going through the recommended people to follow, and one is Brian McTaggart.  I thought, what the hell, maybe I'll get some useful information once in a while.  Holy shit...the guy tweets like 10 times an hour.  About stupid shit.  Doesn't he have a job?  Do people really do this all day?  Two days of Twitter, and I'm about done with it.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Most people don't tweet as much as tags but tweeting is kinda part of his job. Most of his tweets are about the Astros. If somebody tweets to much or bugs you, stop following them. Pretty simple

Yeah, I know how it works.  Just an observation about the need to tell people every single event or thought you have, the second you have it.

MacTaggart tweets a lot during and before games, but you probably notice it more because you have less people in your timeline than people who have been using it a while (because it is less diluted by other things).

It's good to start with someone like MacTaggart and then pay attention to who he retweets and follow the ones that are saying interesting things.

It's just like meeting people at a social function: you may have to go through a few connections before finding someone who you can talk to without wanting to stab them in the eye with a cocktail stick.

I agree that Tags is an over-tweeter, but if someone is going to do that I suppose I would prefer to read about the Astros more than most other things.

I personally take the "read more, tweet less" approach and I wish that more people would do that when they have very little to actually say, but I think Twitter can be a great outlet for news and entertainment. The rush to make the most clever comment during a ballgame can be a beating, but there are a few that do it quite well.

It's not his tweets per se that are the problem, it's that there are so many of them.  The issue is that I can't keep up with 30 tweets an hour.  I don't see how getting 100 per hour will solve that problem.

I don't Twitter at all - I'm too old, and just don't get it - although I understand it is chock-full of useful and rewarding information.

I let other people Twitter, glean the useful and rewarding information, edit and condense it, and then re-post it here. Then I read it. If I remember to, and I have the time.

I use Twitter to shame the local cable company into repairing the service when it goes down. Oddly enough this is by far the most effective way to address an outage. Other than that I guess I'm as confused about it as everyone else around here.

You aren't supposed to "keep up", it's not like people are tweeting novels.  It's just for concise bits of information, some are useless and some are useful.  I follow Twitter on week nights while watching Astros games so I probably only see 15% of McTaggart's tweets...and that's fine.  As an Astros fan you should follow McTaggart.

In the last game McTaggert had like 25 tweets in 4 hours.  That isnt much.  I was anti twitter when it 1st came out, but now I find it my favorite internet source for info and laughs.  For following sports and real time big events it is the great.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

That's 6 tweets per hour...one every 10 minutes.  That's an enormous amount.  That's almost like doing PBP in the GZ.

I don't think you understand what Twitter is used for.  You don't have to be on it and there is no requirement to read a certain amount of tweets.

I think that's kind of the point.  He wants to give you the same experience of sharing a game with him as if you were sitting in the next seat.  Think of Twitter as a global, subject unlimited GZ.  When you stop cowering in the corning at that thought, it's not that bad.

The chuck / Mrs Limey technique of asshole shaming is extremely effective. too, especially with businesses.  A tweet with a gripe and the correct hashtag can reap rewards and benefits.  Imagine this scenario: you're in a restaurant, and your server sits down at your table to take your order.  After they're gone, you whip out your phone and tweet your utter contempt for the practice, hashtagging the eatery.  Next thing you know, you've got a reply, an apology and a gift certificate (you can sit at the bar next time and not suffer the same offense - but you've got a free entree or two).

I've found that face to face with the restaurant manager works as well, and is much less passive agressive.

Mostly a tongue in cheek comment on my part...but, we have discussed administratively whether or not to keep the GZ.  Not everyone agrees that a separate forum for game threads is  best.  Personally, I favor having the game threads in one place, not to be mingled in with the general discussion, and hope people will continue to support it with in-game commentary.

He also retweets other teams fans who whine about the Astros beating their teams.  It can get pretty funny.

I don't think I want to know the answer ... but I am assuming there is no way someone like Ass-zilla could resist a platform like Twitter, where he could dispense his vast knowledge quickly and efficiently to the unwashed masses?

There is an AstroDaily account which tweets a Milo impersonation during games. I don't know who it is though.

It's Milo, not realising that he's become a parody of himself.

I use Twitter to shame the local cable company ...

I was unaware that cable companies were capable of being shamed...

As an Astros fan you should follow McTaggart.

Unless you have significant disdain for him, in which case you can simply not follow him and wait for others to retweet the occasional pertinent informatiion that he spews (which is the route I've chosen to dake...).

Yeah, I was surprised, too, but I had used all my other options. While Hudson's having a quiet word with the shift supervisor who assures him a field technician will be out a week from next Thursday I'm blasting out my complaints to the entire nation and getting immediate results.

Also, what the hell's wrong with passive aggression?

Actually, the missus and I play "good customer/bad customer" over the phone.  She calls and rants and raves and uses words I'm certain will send me to hell.  I then call back and calmly explain that "my wife is upset...you don't know the half of it, I have to live with her...can you help me out her, buddy?"  Works like a charm.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

That's 6 tweets per hour...one every 10 minutes.  That's an enormous amount.  That's almost like doing PBP in the GZ.

For local sports I recommend:

@seantpendergast
@johnroyal
@astroscounty
@Hill713 (our very own Navin R Johnson)

Thanks Bench.  What name do you use on Twitter?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

JBench.  But I don't tweet much.  I just use it as an aggregator.
