If you didn't see Waldo's recap from Saturday, it was very funny.

T1:

Springer flies out F8
Altuve sees 11 pitches, but grounds out sharply 6-3
Gattis beats the shift with a single to RF
Tucker...works the count 3-0 in his favor and walks on the fourth, Gattis to 2B
Carter...misses a 1-0 cookie...lines one to LF, Cabrera with a diving grab in LF to end the inning.

Astros leave a pair, Sox coming to bat.  0-0

Correa, with the high socks, leads off....gets carved up on three pitches for a swinging strike out
Conger stings one to LF, but right at Cabrera for F7
Valbuena, 0 fer last 15, pops up near the dugout, Flowers looked a little jake legged and no out, so Valbuena can swing and miss a slider in the dirt.

Shallow fly ball gets the first out with no chance to tag. Still bases drunk with 1 out.

I was driving home listening to the game on XM, which means that I got the ChiSox broadcast team. Oh my god they're awful, as in making-Ashby-sound-like-Vin-Scully awful. And it didn't even involve Harrelson.

He called two strikes on Altuve that were shoulder level or higher.  Of course, Altuve didn't help himself by swinging at a 3-2 pitch that pretty much hit his foot.

In Valbuena's defense, he did foul off a bunch of pitches. But strike three was right down the middle.

The inability to make contact when a runner is at 3B is now officially pathetic.  At this rate, I don't see how they're going to win another game this year.

Yeah, this is a real problem with a strikeout-or-homer lineup: no productive outs.

I'd say that Valbuena and Marisnick have struggled lately, but sadly, there are many more.

Springer and Altuve have looked better lately, but that's a small consolation.

Yeah, this is a real problem with a strikeout-or-homer lineup: no productive outs.

It's really frustrating as there is no plate discipline whatsoever.  They just hack and hack and any garbage thrown.  An opposing pitcher can get three strikeouts without having to come within 12 inches of the plate.

For any Longhorn fans wondering what happened to Taylor Jungmann, he has struggled mightily in pro ball but he surprising got the call up and got a major league win against the Pirates. 7 innings, 3 hits, one earnie.

Well, Altuve is pretty good, but if Correa isn't #1 he's probably #2.

Well, fuck me sideways. This stretch sucks. Guys are hitting really good pitches out, and now they're hitting them out after other guys get on base with fluke hits. And now it feels like last year, where you felt like they were doomed if the other team scored at all.

Well if you don't score many runs you will have a hard time winning. I think this team needs to figure out LHers. The ChiSox put them into this skid and are prolonging it.

The Slack Shack was unscathed. The Guadalupe is raging but way down from the house. It's quite a sight and all the tubing places are unable to open but the tubing places on the Comal are killing it. Also, because of the flooding I've worked a minimum 10 hours each day (except this past Sunday)  since Memorial day.

This is agonizing. It's like they can't score unless somebody accidentally runs into a mistake pitch, and even then it'll be a solo shot. What's the team OBP in the last couple of weeks?

Getting on base hasn't been as much of a problem as their inability to put a ball in play once they do.

Garcia steals 2B, is up dusting himself off about the time Conger's throw reaches 2B.  Two in scoring position, nobody out.

Qualls in, so naturally a couple of hits put runners at the corner with nobody out for the Sox.

Only the '63, '64, and '68 teams finished the season with a lower team batting average than the .234 that the current team sports. Those were not good teams.

Qualls goes 0-2 on the hitter, than bounces four straight to load the bases with no outs

Cabrera with a 2-run double over Tucker's head.  Still runners at 2B and 3B and nobody out.

4-0 Sox.

That's it for Qualls.

three outs left...chasing four.

Carter's continued whiffing is wearing me out, but I have to give him credit for a number of things: his defense has been totally adequate, and even outstanding at times; he has shown some ability to take walks; he never shows anybody up or complains when things don't go his way; and in the dugout he always seems to have a smile for his teammates.

I just wish he could get back somewhere near where he was in the second half last year as a hitter.

His batting average is about .100 with no power.  Most of his RBI are himself.

Springer works a 3-0 count...has ball four called a strike...has ball five called strike two...flies out F9 to end the game.

Springer is going to get a post-game ejection, but he's absolutely right.

That was some pretty shitty umpiring.

I think that's 0 for 9 with RISP tonight.  Couple that with an appearance by Qualls, and it's not gonna end well.

Robertson could have thrown the 3-2 pitch to Wrigley and gotten a strike call.

The Astros would have swung at it.

If LeBron can pull that off, with this motley crew, he starts serious discussion of replacing Jordan as the GOAT.

utter bullshit calls there,
Strike 2 was at least borderline, but Strike 1 was horrible even by the typically dreadful 3-0 pitch standards of MLB umps. I was impressed that Springer channeled his anger enough to give that last pitch a good opposite-field ride.

Carter's 2014 second half: .252/.338/.521
Carter the past 30 days: .253/.364/.483

I'd say he's come around, it just doesn't look like it when they're not winning.

Qualls has no business in high-leverage situations anymore. When we're winning, it has to be Fields, Harris and/or Neshek, with Gregerson to close. Qualls can come in when we're losing.

By high leverage, I mean a close game, whether or not we're winning. By losing, I mean losing by five runs or more.

No. Carter's "second half" was really about a 4-6 week period in which he was Babe Ruth. The rest of the time he was Chris Carter.
