I don't know if the rumor that Luhnow is being pressured to acquire an arm is true, but with this move and with the McCullers move, it looks to me that he is gauging just how badly a new arm is needed. Or similarly, maybe he's trying to show that a blockbuster trade isn't needed and the rotation spots can be filled internally. Whatever the reasons, I appreciate the moves as it seems sensible to see what you got before you go out into the market.
