Interesting that Tucker is now a regular and we seem to have an official platoon of Marisnick/Rasmus.

I keep waiting to go to Altuve, Tucker, Springer at the top but we're sticking with this I guess. (Not that I think its a problem or anything)

I wonder if they've had Gattis catch a bullpen or two in case something happens to Conger.

Interesting that Tucker is now a regular and we seem to have an official platoon of Marisnick/Rasmus.
But the O's pitcher is RH - so Rasmus would be starting in a platoon.

I wonder if McHugh being a fly ball pitcher influenced the decision to play Marisnick tonight. Not that Rasmus isn't a good OFer.

Does anyone hit the ball harder than Tucker? That was a tailor-made DP if the second baseman had time to field it.

Trying to figure out McHugh this year.  He's still good, but not dominant. That curve is still pretty good, but not badass anymore. Lots of guys fight it off and stay in the AB. Last year, those were strikes.

Also, he doesn't climb the ladder with the four seamer well this year.  Conger calls it, but McHugh doesn't execute it. Last year, the curve/high heat combo was a staple. Not this year.

Vincent Velasquez just gave up a HR in the 7th inning at Corpus. It was the first hit of the game for the visiting NWA (NWA?) Naturals. He's walked 2 and K'd 9.

That was almost an Astros circa 2012 play by the O's, but the throw misses the pitcher's head and they are spared that indignity.

I think Karter's been walking a lot.  He's second on the team after Springer with 26.

According to the game feed, Tucker's grounder came off the bat at 100 MPH. By comparison, Gattis' HR came off the bat at 102 & Luis' HR came off the bat at 103.  Carter's single in the was 107 MPH

Tucker's 1st inning  (ground out to second) was hit hard too at 103 MPH. They didn't give exit speeds for his other two ABs.

I remember a scout saying a couple of years ago that there was a sound coming off of Tucker's bat that was different. That you only heard from special hitters.

I think it's called statcast.  I assume it is slightly similar instruments to pitchfx, just aimed at where balls are hit instead of near where they are thrown.  The fielder and runner data, I don't know how they capture that, but mapping out the fielder and runner data is quite cool.

Thanks for the link.  I can see why they hired Mr. Fast.  I hope they pay him well.

On a side note, after reading his article entitled "Spinning Yarn," I am fascinated by the disconnect between guys like him and the average SABR-minded fan who spouts out a lot of SABR stuff, and attempts to bludgeon those with different views.  It's like some of these average fans became acquainted with early SABR concepts, and then shut it down.  The research is obviously complex and one must stay abreast to be truly knowledgeable.

The leaders in the community are so far out in front of the average SABR-minded fan that the distance between them equates to the distance between SABR and "traditionalists" as portrayed at the beginning of the century.

Is not the speed of the ball off the bat effected by the speed of the pitch?  I mean if I take a stationary bat and deliver a ball at 100 MPH into the sweet spot it's coming back at me at a decent speed versus a soft toss that hits the sweet spot that isn't coming back much.

It does but quality of contact and swing force also impact exit speed. For example,  BP homers often travel farther than game HR despite the slower speed of BP pitches.

Yes, the ball acts like a spring to store energy that is released after the ball is hit. The speed of the ball coming off the bat is much more sensitive to the bat speed though.

And correct me if I'm wrong, the closer to the sweet spot in the bat the more spring.

The bat can absorb some of the energy of the ball and can release back into the ball on the way out. The efficiency it does this will vary  throughout the bat and the type of bat.

I think this is what my Little League coach was trying to explain when he said "swing hard in case you hit it"
