I suppose he's giving Gattis a day off to "clear his head," because I can't imagine he needs a rest from the rigors of DH'ing. And maybe he genuinely needs it, I dunno. It just seems a bit of an overreaction, perhaps, to be putting your SS at DH because he's hit 2 dingers already, and bench your DH because he's hitless in 4 games, replacing him with Marwin Gonzalez.

(not that I don't love Marwin).

Meanwhile, in Frisco, Chuck Greenberg has spent more money on the new colors, uniforms, logos, sports bar, food trucks, live canine mascot (really) and team store than he has on quality minor league players.

Marwin gets the run back that he let in with an error by going yard. 2-1 now.

Carter looks like he forgot everything he learned in the 2nd half last year so far.

That was a shitty, shitty at bat capped off by a miserable excuse-me swing on a pitch he had no business swinging at.

Wait. When Springer did his part on Beltre's Little League homer before, he wasn't charged with an error?

I also assumed that was two errors.

The Rangers should unload Beltre and get something for their future cause they sure suck now. He's like a 9 on a team of mostly 2s.

Game Day says he tripled and scored on a throwing error.

I think he just assumed the throw was bad and once he saw the replay it was too late to backtrack.

Of course why he would assume a bad throw when he knows Chris Carter is playing first base is anyone's guess.

And, to pile on, I've watched about 5 games in the last 3 years and know that Carter likely ranks 30th in fielding effort of all starting first basemen. Ash watches the Astros for a living and seems to have missed this.

Thatcher's throw? I didn't see a great camera angle, and I hate to agree with Ashby. But I thought the way he made a lengthy pause, then lurched and threw the ball from a crazy-ass submarine angle, instead of simply immediately stepping toward first and lobbing the ball, was rather shitty. I'd have to see another replay to say how catchable it was for Carter.

His footwork has been shaky on a lot of throws. It was inevitable. He also badly bobbled and kicked around a grounder recently but the batter loafed to first and was still out.

But, I agree he's looked better than most expected, but he's still a defensive liability, imo.

Agreed, all around. Still, though, what the fuck was Thatcher doing? It was just bizarre. He made a great play to field the ball, then maybe thought he'd try to be a badass, pause dramatically and throw him out in his own wack-ass style.

So the take away from this is that Carter is ok if he only ever has to make routine plays?

I'll have to defend Carter here.  Yes, that was a catchable throw, but Thatcher didn't make it easy on him by throwing a submarine tailing fastball low and outside from 60 away.  You just make a nice, easy, accurate throw on that play, you're not trying to fool anyone or strike someone out.

And Carter has been fine at 1B.  He's not great, but he hasn't been a liability over there either.

That's my take too.  Carter has just stunk it up at the plate.

You could actually make the case that all 3 errors last night were mis-charged. Marwin's throw to 3B was fine, Carmonandez was just in terrible position to take it (not to mention ill-advised to try for the play in the first place), and Rasmus' throw home was not bad at all - looked like Castro should've been able to handle it, and maybe even tag out the runner at home.

Which isn't unexpected.  Plus, there's a lot of that going around.  You're entering the second week of the season and your cleanup hitter hasn't hit a ball out of the infield yet.

Both throws were fine,  Rasmus's in particular, should have been an out.  I still don't get this idea that Castro is a defensive asset and is somehow not easily replaceable.

Beltre also gave Hernandez a discreet shove when he when was trying to catch the ball.
