QC newspaper profile of local boy SS Thomas Lindauer who is repeating the MWL.

A separate article said Chris Lee would get the start tomorrow night for the River Bandits.

Kevin Comer, who pitched 4 scoreless/hitless frames in his first outing last Thursday, did the exact same thing tonight before finally allowing a hit in the 5th.

Nick Tanielu got off to a quick start this year ... starting 4 of the first 6 games at 3B and one at 1B while leading the River Cats in average (.412), OBP (.444), SLG (.647).  For his efforts, he has been reassigned to Tri City to make room for Bryan Muniz.

22 y.o. Muniz put up a .220/.315/.315 line at Greeneville last year, so while it is true that there is no real first baseman on the current Quad Cities squad, I am not sure Muniz is really the answer there.  Tanielu is the same age and put up much better numbers (.300/.353/.425) at Tri City last year playing 3B.

I'm certainly not questioning the move, but it would be good to see if there is more to it somewhere.  Anybody have any insights?

That's particularly bizarre considering TC's season won't begin for 2 more months. Maybe just a weird temporary roster-juggling thing?

I'm guessing injury-related and he was sent back to EST to rehab.

Probably so. And assigned to TC roster as an admin detail.   Just looking for some confirmation on the injury speculation.

Derek Fisher homered today, giving him home runs in three straight games. He's currently batting .346 in his 7 games. Still early in the season, but I don't see how he doesn't make it to at least, Lancaster this season.

As most here probably know, Fisher is a guy who, going back to high school, scouts have pegged as having great power potential, but he's never managed to actually transfer that to games. If this is not just a fluke, but the beginnings of a breakthrough, the Astros will be very, very happy.

Per the game notes, Tanielu was reactivated for tonight's game and Muniz was sent back to EST. Tanielu 0-4 as River Bandits win to go 8-2 on year.

The RBs win the afternoon contest behind another stellar outing from Joe Musgrove (5.2/5/2/1/1/9). 19 year-old INF Kristian Trompiz has the BA up to .300 and the hit streak up to 5 after going 2-4 (but he also made his 6th error of the year already). Derek Fisher has his 9-game hit streak snapped after being removed from the game in the B1 after running out a GB in the top of the inning.

And now to the DL (per league transaction page); Muniz rejoins the team to take his roster spot.

From a Milb.com profile of Joe Musgrove:

Quote
"Joe is off to a very good start," [pitching coach Dave] Borkowski said. "I think the thing that sticks out most ... he has one walk in 20 innings.

Musgrove is throwing in the 90-to-96 mph range this season. He handcuffs batters with a hard slider and a lethal changeup.

"Being my Rule 5 year, I understand that this is a big deciding year where my career goes," Musgrove said. "I did a lot of mental work this offseason, along with the physical training and rehab to get myself ready, knowing that I'm going to be going through a full season of 142 games. That's something I'm not used to. That's a big mental and physical obstacle to go through -- will my arm hold up? Can I get through a full season?"

Yes defintely Mengden.  Played through a stress fracture in his back his last year of college.  Hurt his velocity and his draft position.  Healthy now and looking good.   Love the 10:1 K to BB ratio.

What do yall know about Radziewski?  I know he was a 9th round 4 year college guy and is old for the league, but he's done quite well this year.

That extended Mengden's scoreless streak to 21 innings.

After the loss yesterday, the River Bandits started a new streak this afternoon with a 15-8 slugfest win (they trailed 7-0 in the game at one point). C Jake Nottingham (among the league leaders in HRs and RBIs) goes 3-5 with his 6th longball. Amongst the pitching carnage, Reymin Guduan tossed 2.2 scoreless with 5 whiffs. Since being activated out of EST the lefty fireballer has K'd 12 and walked just 2 in 8 IP. It's way early yet, but nice to see the improved control from a guy who entered the season with 129 walks in 152 career IP.

That is unreal. And I doubt a single person on this board would've picked QC to have the best, or for that matter 2nd- or 3rd-best, record in the system. They were supposed to be the team with no big prospects besides Fisher.

Dude has a funky delivery and did get called for a balk which none of us in the stands understood.    He can bring it though and has an absolutely filthy changeup.   Made several batters look completely silly with it.   We were treated to 13 innings which the home team won on a less-than-upright call.   First batter in the bottom of the 13th inning (ironically, number 13) hit a screamer down the third base line.  Everyone around me said it was a foul ball ( I was blocked by the guy in the hole) but the home plate umpire called it fair.   The batter in the hole was warming up right in front of us and the guy next to me was carrying on about how foul it was and then points to the guy in the hole and says "It's your turn to be the hero number 16!"   Number 16 had his back to the field and was laughing under his breath.   Well, turns out that's exactly what happened.   After one out, number 16 comes to the plate and hits one through the hole where the 2nd baseman normally plays.   Game over...

It was a nice night for a ball game and the River Bandits are still way up on the Kernels.   Final game of a three game set tomorrow night but I'll have to miss it for a nephew's birthday party.

It was a good pitcher's duel for most of the game, neither team could generate much offense.

Thanks, Nate. Yeah, I saw Mengden pitch in Tri-City last year and his delivery is quite weird. Glad to hear he's still using it - the recent article on him mentioned the Astros considered changing it, but apparently decided not to.

What's the story on C Jacob Nottingham? Maybe the HS pick has started to learn some things about pro ball and has turned things around?  A 320/397/583 slash line isn't too bad for a catcher.  How is he as a receiver?

From MLBPipeline.com which has Nottingham listed at #25 on the Astros Top Prospects list:

Quote
Whether Nottingham can stay behind the plate remains to be seen, but he has gotten better as a catcher. He has enough arm strength but must continue to clean up his receiving. He also has seen time at first base.

The few available defensive metrics seem to bear out that summary...

CS Rate:
2013 25%
2014 41%
2015 60%

PB Rate (PB per game):
2013 0.40
2014 0 .16
2015 0.29

Francis Martes was activated today out of EST and started tonight and did quite well (4/2/1/1/3/5).

To refresh memories, the 19-year old righty came in the 3M trade: Marisnick, Moran and Martes from the Marlins in exchange for Jarred Cosart (this year's #37 pick in the draft also came in that trade and Kike Hernandez went the other direction). MLBPipeline.com has him rated #21 on the Astros Top 30 Prospects list.

You're right. Did get me to wondering how Mr. Wates is doing this year: .261/.320/.295 at New Orleans. Even for him that is some lack of pop.

C/1B/DH Jamie Ritchie has hit mostly in the #2 spot this year but batting leadoff for the (IIRC) 1st time. And why not when you have a guy with a .442 OBP. Reached base all 5 times in the game with a single, walk and 3 BBs.

34 walks vs 30 whiffs in 121 ABs for the year.

From a QC Times article on Derek Fisher:

“One of the things the organization wanted to see him concentrate on was improving his first step and route running that would get him to the ball faster and we’re seeing that improve,’’ [QC manager Josh] Bonifay said. “Derek has very good quickness for a center fielder and has tremendous closing speed on balls hit up in the air. By getting that quick first step, he’ll only help himself.’’

RHP Christian Powell and OF Ramon Laureano activated out of EST.

Powell was picked up in ST after being released by the Twins. Laureano was an 16th round pick last year out of an Oklahoma juco. He "hit" .189/.283/.245 in 16 games at Greeneville last year and unless he's somehow made huge strides since then I'm guessing his stay with the River Bandits is not intended to be a long one.

Powell threw 1.2 scoreless innings tonight while Laureano started in RF and went 0-3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts.

Speaking of Bostick, here's a recent profile on him from the QC Times.

Quote
Bostick isn’t necessarily working to pile up impressive strikeout totals, placing his concentration currently on creating short at-bats, attempting to pitch to contact and allowing an aggressive tempo and sharp defensive play behind him to build successful outings.

And the article notes he's the cousin of former Green Bay Packer special teamer Brandon Bostick.

Not sure what Justin Ferrell you're referring to that pitched at TCU. Riley Ferrell is from College Station. *This* Justin Ferrell is from Wagoner, OK  and pitched both his freshman and sophomore seasons at Connors State College (a juco). He is no relation to Riley Ferrell.

That 7 shutout innings/3-hit performance last night for Brock Dykxhoorn was his last start for the River Bandits before going on a 3 week or so hiatus. He'll still be pitching but like CC's Josh Hader he'll be participating in the Pan Am Games. The Ontario native, though, will be pitching for Team Canada.

BTW, last night's game lasted a very tidy 1:49 (according to the game recap, the shortest game for QC since at least 2004).

I'd love to get a first-hand account of how Kristian Trompiz looks in the field.  He leads the world in errors, but they keep running him out there, so they must see something.  He played a lot of SS before Bregman signed, and apparently was able to keep Tommy Lindauer on the bench (not too difficult).  I am beginning to see him like Villar without the speed.

Martes was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2012 for $78,000.  He was a pitch ability RHP that sat in the upper 80′s, but has managed to jump into the 90-94 realm.  Obviously the 18 year old will be very raw and will be a major project, but it’s the kind of project worth taking a risk on.  Martes made the 2013 top DSL/VSL for baseball america.  Currently his change up is said to be ahead of his curveball.

http://www.astrosturf.com/2014/07/31/astros-marlins-complete-big-trade/

I remember reading something about how the Astros insisted that he be in the deal.

Sidenote for those who haven't checked the box score yet: Martes had a 6/4/0/0/2/10 evening. 37/11 strikeout to walk in 41 IP on the year.

As was noted earlier in the thread, the 19-year old righty came in the 3M trade: Marisnick, Moran and Martes from the Marlins in exchange for Jarred Cosart (this year's #37 pick in the draft also came in that trade and Kike Hernandez and Austin Wates went the other direction).

I wouldn't describe him as a throw-in the trade as apparently he was someone the Astros really wanted. However he was a relatively low-level signing for the Marlins back in 2012 (for $87K) who has made year-by-year improvements including a jump in FB velocity. BA already had him as the 17th best Astros prospect entering the year.

I was curious about the Touki Touissant comment. Do you have a link for that or is it behind a paywall?

It was behind a paywall, but if it is just one quote, I'll assume it is OK. An unnamed scout says "I know Touki Toussaint gets all the hype because of the draft slot and the trade, and I like Touki, but I'll take Martes over him all day."

I didn't realize Touissant was in a trade, but I remember seeing him in the futures game, iirc.

Ferrell* followed up his slightly shaky pro debut with 2 scoreless innings tonight, whiffing 2 in the process.

*For those unable to keep their Ferrells straight w/o a scorecard, that would be Riley and not Justin.

ETA:

Riley Ferrell followed Martes’ start with two innings of relief work, touching 99 miles per hour on the radar gun twice, before Ryan Thompson allowed Peoria to end a 17-inning scoreless streak.

DBacks traded Toussaint to the Braves mostly in order to get the rest of Arroyo's contract off their books. Trade has been widely panned.

Heading to the River Bandits at Chiefs game on Sunday.  Anything I should be looking for?   I admit to not following the team as closely this year..

In addition to Bregman and Martin, pitcher David Paulino. Paulino I believe is scheduled to pitch on Sunday so you should be able to see him. Coming off TJS but the Astros bumped him up quickly after just 2 outings at TRC.

The game today was pretty much a bust.   The River Bandits ran into a fireballer with control on the Chiefs and just could not get anything going all day.   McNitt was the sacrificial lamb and to be honest, I didn't see anything special with the kid.  Fastball in the mid 80s, but did throw a decent curve a few times for strikes.    As I said, Bregman was the DH and didn't square up anything in his at-bats.   That said, neither did anyone else.

Martin looked good in LF.. seemed to have good instincts.

Trompiz looks to be pressing a little bit in the field.   He played shortstop today and he seemed to be serviceable.  However, one particular play stands out in my mind.  Chiefs had a runner on first and 3rd and a sharp grounder was hit to shortstop.   You could see that Kristian wanted to go home with it but he had trouble making the transfer from glove to hand and had to record the out at first.   Overall it didn't matter but it stuck out in my mind.

Also, he was tagged the "strikeout hitter".   That is, if the pitcher struck him out today, everyone in section 104 would get free Hardees.   Perhaps a little more pressure on the guy but he never did strike out.

All in all, a pretty forgettable game on getaway day.

Angel Heredia hasn't allowed a hit his last 9 IP. His 2 outings last week made him Midwest League Pitcher of the Week.

20-year old Venenzuelan righty Elieser Hernandez, who led the NYP with a 0.73 WHIP and possessed a terrific 30/2 strikeout to walk ratio in 20.2 IP, bumped up to the Bandits.

And is joined today by fellow V-Cat and 19th-rounder in this year's draft OF Drew Ferguson, who had been tearing it up in the NYP to the tune of .323/.418/.586 (albeit in just 17 games). He meets up with ex-teammate and fellow Belmont alum Jamie Ritchie on the Bandits.

And that makes the 4th player from this year's draft crop to be placed at QC.

Christian Powell with another fine outing to give him a 34/8 K:W on the year.

The 6'4" 225 lb righty out of College of Charleston and former 8th-round pick of Minnesota was recently profiled by the QC Times. He was released after 3 walk-filled seasons in the Twins system. Early returns certainly suggest he's gotten the wildness finally under control.

David Paulino is absolutely monotonous (in a good way): the 6'7" 21-year old dominicano threw 7 scoreless tonight and runs his K/W to 36:6 in 31.1 innings for the year.

And like David Paulino, continues his outstanding pitching at the higher level. After this afternoon's performance now has a 41/3 K/W in 28 IP combined between TRC and QC. Just 18 hits allowed. Has not allowed a run over his last 19.1 innings.

From BP's "What the Scouts are Saying" this morning on Alex Bregman:

Quote
I know the draft position and what I'm supposed to see when Alex Bregman arrives in pro ball, and even with lofty expectations like that, he's exceeding them early on; at least for me. This kid is a player with good big league tools and he's going to get there quickly.

Elieser Hernandez has pitched in 5 games (4 starts) for QC.    2-1, 1.93 ERA.  23.1 IP, 21 H, 3 BB, 27 Ks.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Yep.  I kinda wish I could see Hader in big league Astros gear someday, and maybe Houser as well, but it is great to be able to trade those guys for value now and still have plenty of talent left in the system.  The guys traded were arguably not even the cream of the crop.

No one knows how those traded will turn out but I can't help but think Phillips was some cream. A top 50 prospect in most lists and one or two generally on the Astros list.

Here is a list of the Top pre-season Astros prospects ranked by John Sickels  (and if you don't like him I can show you another list that is almost identical) and the 5, 6, 7 guys were all dealt. I suppose that qualifies for not trading the cream of the crop when you kept your top 4 but the list at mid-season would have been somewhat different with Phillips rising. Anyway, deals needed to happen and there is no use in crying over spilt milk.

River Bandits fall the Kernels 3-1 to be swept from the postseason.

Was knotted up at 1-1 going into the top of the 11th when the Kernels struck for two runs off of Heredia.

The 8-9-1 hitters could do nothing against Nick Anderson of the Kernels in the bottom half and so get to
go home.

Just a note about this year's River Bandits team from their web page:

"In addition to the best regular season winning percentage (.638) in full-season Minor League Baseball for the first time in franchise history, the River Bandits posted a franchise-record 2.65 ERA. The records came while Quad Cities led the Houston Astros organization by using 61 players and 37 pitchers - both franchise records."

That's an amazing revolving door in the Quad Cities and shows the strength of the minors under Luhnow and Co...

Agreed. Fisher, Bregman, Nottingham, Martes, Mengden, Bostick, Paulino, Musgrove - they had a ton of talent contribute there and then get moved up. The end-of-season roster had very little "household" prospect names - Jason Martin, Dykxxhoorn... that's about it. Kudos to all the unheralded guys like Tanielu, Boyd, Joshua James, Justin Ferrell, etc. for being big contributors to an excellent team despite all the turnover happening around them.

That was the case for many of the teams in the Astros system.  It is amazing they are having the system wide success with the vast amount of movement that occurred on the rosters.

The front office/player development folks deserve a great deal of praise for knowing the pieces to move to keep teams winning.
