Cuts
« on: March 29, 2015, 07:46:14 am »
In the biggest, and most important , round of cuts, so far, the club announced the following moves:

Optioned - Dominguez, Buchanan, Stassi
Reassigned - Correa
Told they won't make the team (but, will stay through camp) - Downs, Heineman, Hoyt, Petit

Deduno was also told that he made the club as the long reliever, leaving one bullpen spot for Chapman, Thatcher, and Will Harris to fight over while Fields is injured.

Hoyt surprises me mildly. He's pitched pretty well.

I think there's one spot in the pen still even if Fields stays off the DL.

They'll need a second lefty.

You are correct. I was going off McTaggart's tweets this morning without looking up actual spots. He elaborated a little more in an article this afternoon, adding that there would be a second spot open if Fields starts the season on the DL. If Fields starts the season on the 25-man, it would be down to 1 spot and they would have to decide if they want two lefties. If not, they would probably go with Harris and one of the lefties.

And one spot cleared up:

astros.com saying Carmonandez has been told he's in the rotation. Wojo could still make it if Obie's not ready to start the season.

So they'll need to create 2 spots on the 40-man. Looking it over, Hoes seems an obvious candidate, and maybe Presley, who's out of options anyway. Or do they cut bait/risk losing someone like White or Buchanan?

Nice thing about putting Presley through waivers, if anyone takes him they are on the hook for a million

I wonder if they want Wojo to open in minors to have him under club control for another year. If Hernandez is shaky they bring him up later.

Staring at the 40-man and having trouble deciding 2 players to go...priceless.

My guess is Hoes or Dominguez would be the second candidate.  I doubt they are willing to give up White or Buchanan.  With Moran and Correa rising fast, Domniguez may never get another shot anyways.

Wojo's spot is more about the health of Peacock and Obie.

Is Oberholtzer's health an issue? He threw 70 pitches last night and Hinch said he got stronger as he went along.

I doubt it. He's likely to be going back and forth this year no matter what.

Yes, but keeping him in the minors for, I think one month, gives the club another year of control. This is what the Cubs appear to be doing with Bryant and the Astros did with Springer last year. He can still be sent down later in the year.

They could easily send him down in late April, or May, or June, and almost certainly will need to as guys come back from the DL and such. Spending 10 or 12 days in AAA at any point in the year (or next year for that matter) will gain them the extra full year of club control. If they need him in early April, there is virtually no reason not to use him.

Springer and Bryant are guys where you expect them to be up for good once you bring them up. Wojo, at this point in his career, is not that guy.

According to McTaggart:

Fields, Obie and Peacock to start year on DL. Chapman, Hoes, Singleton to Fresno. Presley DFA

Grossman, Harris, Marisnick, Villar and Wojo made the club

They'll still need one more 40-man move I think....Dominguez?

Astros place Fields, Oberholtzer and Peacock on the DL, retroactively.

Petit wasn't on the 40-man so they still have 1 person to drop.  I see Thatcher on the 40-man now but still no Hernandez
