So, my Dayton Flyers got hosed.  I don't expect them to go Elite 8, or even Sweet 16 this year, but First Four?  FUCK YOU selection commitee.  UCLA is in....and safe? WTF?  And hell, even Texas is a bit of a shock.

That said, looking forward to the next month.  Plus, by the time the dust settles a real sport will have started its season.

I was surprised by UT. Not that they got in, but that they avoided the play-in games.

Dayton is in.  What's your beef?

They have to play an extra game while others, less deserving, don't.

So what?  Beat the teams in tournament if you want to win it.

BTW, do you know the reason(s) House and Young left UH? That hurt.

Tashawn Thomas (key played for Oklahoma) leaving hurt the most.  Thomas and House left due to "advisers."  Young's dad and UH legend Micheal was on the coaching staff, then there was a riff and he was demoted, and he got Joe to transfer.  Joe actually started school at Providence, before coming to UH and then transferring to Oregon.

House acted like a turd, don't miss him.

I Hate Christian Laettner on ESPN 30 for 30. It's pretty good. The focus is on Laettner and Duke of course but it offers a broader picture of the Golden Age of college basketball.

Apropos nothing, John Oliver rips the NCAA a new one [Language NSFW, long clip]

Quote
During a segment that ran over 20 minutes, Oliver pointed out the following (or you could just watch it for yourself, at the bottom of the post):

That the tournament brings in over a billion dollars in ad revenue, about three times more than the Super Bowl and almost as much as an entire NFL slate of postseason games.

The endless number of official sponsorships of March Madness, all the way down to the ladders used to cut down the nets.

The way NCAA officials, in particular president Mark Emmert, hide behind the designation of players as “student-athletes,” as opposed to employees, and force athletes to sign a form affirming their status as amateurs.

A ridiculously long rulebook for players, containing endless possible infractions, and enforcement incidents that “go from the petty to the downright heartless.”

That the NCAA claims that its athletes are paid handsomely in the form of a great education, even as injured players lose scholarships and healthy players struggle to balance training sessions with classes and homework.

Cases such as the “shadow curriculum” at North Carolina, in which student-athletes take bogus classes designed to inflate grades and maintain eligibility for sports.

How the NCAA made money off players’ likenesses in video games, even after they had graduated and thus couldn’t be called “students” anymore, as brought to light in the lawsuit led by former UCLA star Ed O’Bannon.

That schools, as with many supposedly “non-profit” enterprises, can move money around or simply spend it wildly on massive stadiums and other lavish athletic facilities, in order to not have much by way of technical profit on their books.

Players may not get paid, but many of their coaches receive salaries well into the millions, in addition to other forms of compensation.

The mind-boggling gall of Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney, who makes over $3 million per year, saying, “As far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me. I’ll go do something else, because, you know, there’s enough entitlement in this world as it is.”

That there is no lucrative, professional payday awaiting the overwhelming majority of college athletes.

The first president of the NCAA, Walter Byers, invented the term “student-athlete” in order to help schools avoid having to make workers’ compensation payments to injured athletes.

Poor Baylor.  Should've had a stronger OOC schedule.

That made me laugh. The game yesterday, not so much...  Bad day for teams from Texas - all 5 lost - first time that's happened (I saw 2 of 'em go down in person - actually thought SFA had a chance, but just couldn't get it going...).  Bad day for the Big 12 too...  Bad day for my brackets too... but on the bright side, only lost 3 Sweet 16 teams, 2 Elite 8 teams, and 1 Final Four team, so there is that... FML...
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

My best possible score based on having Iowa St. going to the final is well below everyone else in the OWA Challenge. Basically, you all would have to had made brain dead picks from here on out for me to have a chance. Iowa St. in the final? I'm dead meat!

7'6", listed at 300 too, so he's not Manute Bol.

Was pulling for the Anteaters, REALLY hoping for the upset.  Turner went to my uni, was basically a GA when I was there. Us small school guys have to stick together.
