David Freese
« on: October 31, 2014, 11:01:29 pm »
So there is a report that the Angels are looking to trade either Howie Kendrick or David Freese this offseason.  I think it is highly possible that David Freese plays next year in an Astros uniform.  There is the Cardinals connection, and he is an obvious upgrade over Dominguez (but who isn't).  He would also be a stop gap replacement, which is what I think the Astros are looking for as they buy time for Moran to be ready.  Thoughts?

Read more, post less. It might be nice to conjure up all sorts of possibilities for acquisitions, but when they are devoid of real promise, we tend to get annoyed. This is your warning.

An average hitter at 3B would be a significant offensive upgrade over Dominguez last year so Freese makes some sense. Dominguez does some very nice stuff on defense though, so maybe the Astros tread water here until Moran or Riuz or whoever are ready.

I'm not against Freese, per se, just wondering what the hell a "Cardinals connection" has to do with anything.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

All baseball roads run through St. Louis.

Except for my friends who miraculously turned out to be Kansas City fans and would not stop beating that drum. FUCK. Did you know that 'Kansas City' is the BEST song about a city anywhere? Of course you knew KC had the best barbecue, loads of it. And it's so picturesque and pastoral, and everyone is a saint and so friendly and cool, and they have great weather, and oh - it's just the BEST. So much better than that shithole down I-70.

I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

I've been to KC once, for a football game.  It was nice.  I wouldn't get carried away with it or anything, but it was nice.

I'm sure that compared to what's around it, KC is an oasis but these people are convinced it's Nirvana on the Plains.

I am not against him either. He did struggle at the plate last season a bit, and he's battled some injuries the past two years. However, Dominguez needs to significantly improve his hitting before I consider him a fixture.

I don't know who called Dominguez a fixture or what it has to do with this scenario.

Luhnow.

I'm familiar with him. I still don't know what it has to do with anything unless one thinks Luhnow is blinded by his former employer.

I do. I think he's got a secret cardinal tattoo on his the inside of his eyelids.  But besides that, he might have a bit more history with Freese than with some others.

Maybe Hinch can recommend some old Diamondbacks to round out the lineup.

Pfffftt. You mean like personal history? Like having actually seen the player play many many times with his own eyeballs, been around him and gotten a sense of his personality, work ethic, and possible veteran leadership qualities? Come on. Everybody knows the Astros don't care about that stuff. It's illogical and they are robots who only do what's logical based on their algorithms. And Luhnow has definitely, definitely not shown an inclination to hire former Cardinals employees.

You're right.  The Astros should sign every ex-Cardinal they can find.  Even if they're not particularly good, Luhnow has seen them, so that pretty much makes up for any shortcomings.

I haven't paid much attention to Freese, but he did have three pretty good seasons before his last two, at least by the numbers.  Is there something wrong with him?

I've heard no rumors about where Hinch's Diamondback tattoo is located. I'm pretty sure it's a snake tattoo.

He is what he is.  Is that an upgrade from Dominguez?  Not really.

I don't see Freese as that much of an improvement over Dominguez and you'll have to give up something to get him. Plus he's 31 and will be a free agent in 2016.

Yeah, the traffic from new posters is just killing this place's cheerful ambience.
