OPENING DAY 2014 - tickets, food, etc.
« on: March 27, 2014, 02:28:35 pm »
Our tickets will be waiting for me at Will Call, so you'll have to find me to get yours. I will not be able to mail your tickets to you.

The game is at 6:10pm. With the Fan Fest Whatever that will be going on, and the 70's Music Extravaganza Fireworks Phantasmagoria, I plan on standing around in front of the Union Station entrance at 4:30. Don't make me miss that exciting 'Carry On My Wayward Son' or 'Afternoon Delight' presentation, get there before 5:15, dammit. When 'Stayin' Alive' starts up I'm going in and you're on your own.

I'll probably have my Astros cap on, and my Jackie Robinson Day RedAss jersey on, so that should narrow me down to less than 100 possible dorks for you to sift through in your hunt. I still don't have a working model of antennae, so you'll have to imagine they're retracted.

For the more traditional members of the gang, the ones who will be meeting at Spanish Flower, let's be there by 1pm. Anyone brave enough to come to Alice's Tall Texan at noon, or am I savoring frosty goblets of Shiner Bock on my own?

I expect that many of the SF crew will decamp to the Flying Saucer for pregaming festivities, so if you miss the lunch that'll be the next stop on the tour.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

Affirmative. I will be with EasTexAstro, who I assume knows you. I'll be wearing my rainbow bullpen sweater and a Colt 45's cap. At 6'5" 260, you can't miss me.

I may or may not be at SF, depending on when I can give work the finger and get on the road to Houston. SF at 1, Saucer at 3?

3 is close for the Saucer, might be a tad after but it's hard to say. You'll have beer to keep you company, so that ought to be ok.

Since I've been out of work all week I won't be able to make lunch.  I'll try to take off around 3 and meet you all at the Saucer.

Driving a pick-up truck I assume?  The white sports coat thing doesn't seem to fit the image I have.

As a reminder... I've passed along my two tickets to EastTexAstro (IIRC, he had a couple of extra folks he wanted to bring with him).  Y'all have fun now, and GO ASTROS!!!

I've owned two pick-up trucks, but can't say either one of them was ever on a levee.  I haven't had a white sports coat since I was 4.  I looked pretty good in it, going by the pictures.

Thank you, HH. The frosty goblets are sublime. I'm sorry you're missing OD this year. Maybe we can do a regular season game to make up for it.

Steady on, Brandy, the 70's music extravaganza that you're so worked up about doesn't happen until after the game.

Of course I'll be back later in the series for the fireworks show featuring an Elton John - Billy Joel dueling piano soundtrack.

I'm up for that.  I shall be returning to the US April 6th, and will be needing to get my early season baseball fix.

70s music.  Man I lived that.  Cat Stevens.  James Taylor.  John Denver.  I am so there.

I'm guessing we'll get some KC and the Sunshine Band, some Bee Gees, some John Denver. They might feel the need to balance that with some Kool and the Gang, and I'm betting they'll throw in that execrable Black Water bullshit too. I'll be retching my way back to Austin.

Nothing a couple of plays of Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun won't fix.

It's usually that second turn through the Saucer that makes me retch.

In the 1970's, I was all about the Ohio Players, Bar-Kays, O'Jays, Manhattans, Stylistics and the Spinners.

None of which will make it to the Fireworks Extravaganza. It'd be great at the Spanish Flower though.

I just look forward to shaking a bunch of hands and probably giving a few hugs too--you're all warned! The music is secondary. However, come to think of it, the only "white" rock acts (other than several doo wop groups) I was ever a big fan of back then are the Four Seasons (I grew up listening to their old records too and liked their 1970's stuff-was just listening to Big Girls Don't Cry on my ipod), the Box Tops (absolutely loved Soul Deep) and Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds. There may be others, but I just can't remember them right now. I just couldn't get into the Beatles or any of the British invasion groups. Our listening to Stax Records back then probably had a lot to do with that.

Are you going to Spanish Flowers? I plan on being there, provided that Southwest Airlines delivers me on time tomorrow. We're going to meet Ron Brand at the ball park to get the tickets.

OK - I've looked it up, and my plan will be to leave SF and go to the ballpark, park somewhere roughly equidistant and pick up the tickets from Will Call, then hoof it to the Saucer and distribute them there, since it looks like everyone going to the game will be at the Saucer.

IF YOU DO NOT PLAN ON GOING TO THE FLYING SAUCER BEFORE THE GAME, PLEASE LET ME KNOW HERE, IN THIS THREAD.

See you gomers tomorrow. I hope everyone is bringing all their toys and gifts and awards and bullshit. And that someone is brave enough to meet me at the Tall Texan.

If my plans all work out AND everyone who's going is also going to the Saucer beforehand, then I'll just go with the group from the Saucer, whenever they go. We'll all travel as a pack. If someone can't make it to the Saucer, then we're back to me hanging around the stadium like some Craphouse Gargoyle, waiting for you to show up.

I won't be able to make the festivities at the Saucer, but can probably swing by SF for lunch, and can walk over to the Saucer to pick up tickets.  The three of us will try to be at the game before Jeter gets hurt.

Also, according to the Round Rock Express schedule, Oklahoma City is opening there.  I wish I had time to go this weekend, but would anyone consider a meet up in July when they play there again?

I didn't see any, but then again the line for brisket sandwiches was three innings long, so how the hell would I know?

Yeah, how was it?

They sold out of the sliced brisket before we got served. It was not a pretty sight - 60 or so people in a crowd that was nominally sectioned into lines. Dank, still, fetid because there was no air circulation; glacial movement because everything is made slowly by hand, vendors dipping into troughs to pull out the shredded beef or waiting for the one cutter behind them to cut, or painstakingly filling baked potatoes. The registers went out from time to time, and a couple of times people would come out and announce they were running out of whatever. Behind the counter at least one guy was close to flipping out and it looked like a mutiny might be imminent.

The food? I got a chopped beef sandwich. I don't know how or where the meat would've been cooked, but mine was overly salty, dry, and had a very hard knuckle-sized chunk in it that didn't really resemble a burnt end. I was pretty hungry, so I ate most of it (and the portion was generous) but I would not eat it again. Nor would I be encouraged to try their sliced brisket.

If you're ever in Austin, I just got a pastrami Reuben from Melvin's Deli Comfort, a trailer on 53rd and Duval. They smoke their pastrami over apple wood and it's fall-apart tender with a beautiful smoke flavor. They cure their own meats, make their own dressings, sauces and sauerkraut, get their breads from a local bakery and their cheeses and vegetables locally as well. The price was the same as that at the ball park, but the product was light years better and they're consistently great - I've been buying their food for a couple of years now.

Actually, Kris had gotten the brisket on Saturday when there were only 10 other people in the stadium, and even then she had been amazed at the quality of the service.  Not amazed at the good quality mind, more like incredulous.  I should have warned you.

Is that the red trailer? The bartender at Workhorse told me they made the best sandwiches in Austin, but I have yet to get by there.

Yeah, it is not as good up there as it looks from the field seats. I couldn't get comfortable with it, and kept moving around. I did try to see if I could spot ya'll a couple of times, but I don't know if I actually did.

I was pretty fucked up, too. If it was between innings, I might have been looking for the restroom.

Great game, though.
