Astros @ Nationals March 10, 2014 Recap
« on: March 11, 2014, 08:06:00 am »
I was out to dinner with Mrs. Happy last night. The Good Guys beat the Nats and Gio Gonzalez 7-4. Harrell tossed four frames and only allowed one earnie  in garnering the W, while only issuing one.free pass, which is his nemesis. Corporan went deep for the Good Guys and went 2-3, raising his spring BA to .455. Villar plated three with a double in three trips, and Petit aded two knocks in three trips. Folty tossed two frames, surrendering a long ball. The pitchers only struck out three Nats.

Sparks was raving about Petit's defensive work in the radio cast. Springer also made a nice running catch in RF, and Correa's footwork and technique drew praise.

Springer is the real deal out in the outfield. I've seen enough from him to know that. Petit has always had a plus glove. However, he's more of a utility player in my opinion. Correa has accounted for himself very well in big league camp. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up at the beginning of this season. I have to think AA?

BA seems certain that he'll start at high-A. Makes sense; he's very likely to rake there and then he can head to AA with plenty of confidence.

You gotta figure some combination of Marwin/Izturis and maybe Petit at AAA, with Fontana probably beating Mier out at AA.  Correa is clearly a better prospect and maybe even better right now, but Fontana will not benefit from more time in Lancaster and had too good a season to give up on.  I agree with BA on where Correa will start the season.

I disagree.  At some point Correa will pass Fontana.  If the Astros think he's ready for AA they'll put him there and have him pass Fontana now.  However, if that did happen, I'd expect Fontana to be the AA starting 2b.

Fontana seems destined to be a SS/2B/3B utility guy, who maybe winds up as a starter here and there. So, yeah, might as well give him some time at 2B now.

Good point ... I think Fontana will be at AA, but I overlooked the possibility (likelihood, really) that he might end up at another position.

Ronald Torreyes is another guy who could play SS/2B at Corpus Christi.

I think that The King is making a strong bid to be the opening day shortstop. He seems to have recovered his game from 2012. He doesn't have Villar's raw talent, but he is much steadier. The last thing that the Astros need is more erratic shortstop play.

I agree. And Villar's middle name is "erratic". I would love to see Marwin earn regular duty there.
