Christmas Movies
« on: December 29, 2013, 11:26:29 am »
Wondering if anyone has seen any of the big Christmas movies?  We're going to see Wolves of Wall Street sometime this week.  I've heard Anchorman isn't all that good and we watched American Hustle last night (sort of).

I know a lot of folks really liked American Hustle, but my wife and I just couldn't get into it.  The acting was good, but it just seemed to move too slow.  We walked out at roughly the 80 minute mark.  I hear it picked up towards the end a bit, but we were thinking about leaving at the 45-50 minute mark and tried to give it a bit more time.  I'm glad to hear others liked it though.

American Hustle is a good example of having really good actors who are completely miscast. Also, the story wasn't that interesting or at least should have been shorter. It's still pretty good, but it's probably the 4th best David O. Russell film at least.

It may be self-selecting, but everyone I know who has seen it has been amazed by Inside Llewellyn Davis including myself. It's not a crowd pleaser, one of the Coen Brothers serious films.

I saw Ender's Game last night at the Drafthouse and was really impressed. It's a weird, dark book that maybe only appeals to people who wanted to go the Air Force Academy as teenagers, but the film is remarkable well made.

I still need to see The Desolation of Smaug and Wolf of Wall Street. Going to see Her in about an hour.

American Hustle could have been great but got screwed up somewhere.   I want to see Philomena.

We went to see Desplation of Smaug. The best actor in the movie is Smaug. It was a nice little book, now expanded to a long epic movie. Bad idea.

Probably going to watch Wolf of Wall Street next weekend.  Maybe Smaug, I don't know.

Maybe it was the era but I loved American Hustle. It did drag in places, though.

Why would you walk out 80 minutes in?

Because there was still nearly an hour left that I didn't want to see.  Had there not been a packed theater and such great reviews, I would have pulled the plug around the 45-50 min mark, but we decided to give it another 30 mins.

My wife and I walked out of it yesterday at around that 45 minute mark. Your post confirms that that was the right move. It's the first movie I've walked out on in the last 20 years. I failed to see anything redeeming about the story/acting/presentation whatsoever.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

I love the LOTR trilogy, preferring the extended versions as they seem more rounded and fill in the plot holes created by the cut down to 3 hours.

About half way through Unexpected Journey, I wanted it to be over.  Egads!

I won't be watching the remaining two movies; I don't have time to sit through a 3-hour video game commercial.

I want to go just to see the Smaug part. Maybe I will show up late.

Her is sort of a philosophy dissertation of a movie. It's funny and full of creepy ideas. Not sure the latter will appeal to everyone.

The movie goes a lot of strange places not really mentioned in the trailer. The people who made the trailer also had the basic human decency not to give away the best jokes.

This is sort of addressed in the film.

Wolf of wall street better.

By a long shot.  So much debauchery that it was disgusting, but I guess it was reality.  Fantastic movie though that couples funny moments with serious ones.  Though this is by far the longest movie I've seen in a while it felt like it was the right length and didn't have many slow periods.
