Boot store rec
« on: December 26, 2013, 12:23:35 am »
I need to retire a couple of pair of cowboy boots (a Lucchese and Tony Lama), and wanted to pick up a couple of replacements before I leave town late Thursday afternoon. Anyone have a rec on the north side (Conroe, Woodlands, Spring/1960) of boot stores with decent prices / sales going on / good selection? Thanks!

Cavender's, there's one on 1960 and Kuykendahl Rd.

Thanks, definitely will make the trip to that Cavenders (it's pretty close to my dad's place).
Any others I should look at?

Cavenders will have the largest selection and best prices on off the shelf boots. The last few pairs I've bought have been custom made by Jesse's Boots in South Houston. They also have some for sale already made, but it's kind of hit and miss, and most look like they're made for a grupo Tejano. But their boots are top notch. They're not cheap, however.

Pinto Ranch is pretty amazing, but it's in the Galleria.   It's not cheap, but as I recall it has a good selection of Luchese.

I would go with a nice pair of botas picudas. I can't imagine there are too many people in the Portland area who are trying to capture that particular style.

I found some that might fly in Portland.

Those look like the Nudie suit Gram Parsons wore on the cover of The Gilded Palace of Sin

It's all fun and games until you have to go through a revolving door.

Or a turnstile. Let's face it, as fashionable as they unquestionably are they're not terribly practical.

Pointy toes on boots originated to make it easier to get a boot into a stirrup.  These botas are far more efficient by keeping you from ever getting near a horse.

I'd had a pair of clack Luccheses and a pair of smooth Ostrich black cherry Tony Lamas (and a couple of others along the way that have been put to rest or I've gotten sick of them) for 15+ years that I've re-soled a dozen plus times between 'em.  They've gotten so bad (torn, etc) that I rarely wear them any more.  Saw a pair (actually a couple) of Luccheses (low end) that I liked a lot - and for a legit price - when I was at IAH (of all places) in early December, but they didn't have my size.

Ended up going to the Cavender's in Conroe(ish) yesterday before I left town, and got a pair of brown Luccheses (same as I saw at IAH, and within $20 of the proce as well).  Very pleased with the rec, and the service at Cavenders - thanks Sphinx, and but for stabbing myself in the foot on a 1 1/2" or so lasting nail while trying on one of the pairs, would've walked away with two pair (still need to replace the black).

[Fortunately, I caught myself before putting a hole through my foot, but was kinda freaked out for a moment as I presumed it was a jacked up needle someone had discarded in the boot...  The gal helping me with my purchase was horrified, and the manager was a tad 'sipleased' about it as well (and that was with me saying it was no biggie and failing to mention I'm a plaintiff's attorney...).  In retrospect, if I'd whined about it I'd probably have gotten that pair gratis just to shut me up...].
