Love seeing the huge grins on the kids faces as they make their MLB debuts. Time to crush a couple off Blacley there kid!

Not only was 1B off the bag, but Hoes might've also beat the throw as well...  Pretty impressive to make the wrong call for two different reasons... Ugh!

I saw it live and yet the umpire missed it standing 5 feet away.

I haven't watched a game in a couple of weeks. I can't wait to see what kind of defensive idiocy Carter contributes tonight.

And another crappy call on the Kinsler swing-and-miss-called-foul-ball. Fortunately, no harm caused as Kinsler filed out on the 3-2 pitch.

This defense and this HPU will test his mettle.

His curve is really causing trouble for the Rangers right now.

Stassi was running for second as the pitcher fielded a ground ball. He overthrew the player covering the bag and Stassi was safe at second. The umpire stood there idly watching the play without giving a safe signal. The ball had been cleanly caught by the other middle infielder who was backing up the play a dozen feet or so behind the bag. Stassi looked around and assumed that the play had been made for the force out and started to walk back to the dugout. The player with the ball charged at him and tagged him out. The umpire delighted in making the out call with excessive dramatics.

And if the ump doesn't give you a signal, you stand on the bag and ask him a direct question. Stassi still blew it.

I doubt that he knew he was a rookie (although maybe he did, since they threw the ball out after his hit). I suspect he was just applying the same rule as the HPU does on a play at the plate where the runner doesn't touch the plate and the catcher hasn't made the tag: no signal is given until a definitive event takes place. In this case, the ball wasn't dead, Stassi left the base, so it's inappropriate for the ump to give any indication until he either returns to the base safely or the fielder tags him out.

I'm pretty sure that the umpire did signal safe when the throw went past the bag, but unfortunately for Stassi, he was sliding into the bag at the time and he never saw it.

I don't think the ump did signal safe.  I remember looking for it on the replay.  Stassi slid into second.  Kept his hand on the base while standing.  Then walked off.  The ump rather stood there.  That is when he got tagged out.  I think Stassi learned to ask the ump what the call was before leaving the base and not assuming anything about major league umpires.

Stassi succeeded in arriving at the base before the fielder made the tag so I have no idea why a safe call, which the umpire most certainly did not make, would have been inappropriate.

Please note, the link is from the Rangers broadcast, so you may want to mute it.

Stassi succeeded in arriving at the base before the fielder made the tag so I have no idea why a safe call, which the umpire most certainly did not make, would have been inappropriate.

It was a force play, no tag necessarry...there really should have been a call of some sort made.  That being said, Stassi should not have assumed anything.  The lack of a call should have been red flag enough for Stassi to stay put until he figured what the hell was going on.

My point was that it's inappropriate after Stassi has left the bag.

I just looked at video again, and BG is right: there was never a safe call, which is bogus. My guess is that Stassi felt the tag from Andrus and assumed Andrus had the ball, so he assumed he was out. As he gets up he gives a very brief glance at the ump and then just walks away with his head down. Oops. I suspect that had something to do with it being his first game and not wanting to show up an ump.

You can't get that kind of news just anywhere.  Pretty riveting, and good luck on the rubber game.
