Harrell to the pen
« on: July 07, 2013, 02:49:20 pm »
Astros County, via a tweet from Smith, reports that Harrell is going to the pen.

Maybe they had seen enough of his attitude.

Oh, good. Because the bullpen doesn't fuck things up enough already.

Here is the Chron general article: Astros’ Lucas Harrell moved to bullpen indefinitely

And a further 'transcript' of the interview via the Chron: ‘Shocked’ Lucas Harrell discusses move to bullpen, future with Astros

In the second article, he never appears to own his failures: I'm shocked, Felix and I are tied in dominant starts, they want their own guys, they haven't relayed much to me, etc.

He didn't once mention his poor performance or his propensity to blame everything but himself.  Sounds as if Porter wanted him to react in a completely different way than he has, and the next step might be trade him for next to nothing or just release him.

I agree. Someone who is pitching to a 5.04 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and a .281 BAA has some room for improvement. It sounds like the guy who fed him that statistic that he allegedly shares with King Felix was just stirring the shit pot. I'd trade or release him right now. He's not going to even try in the bully.

It would be nice if Lucas could get his head out of his ass and look in the fucking mirror, as Ed Wade would say. I actually think he could be a pretty good closer - maybe channel his rage and intensity a bit, add a mph or two to his sinker, walk the bases loaded before finally getting the game-ending DP; you know, like all good Astro closers.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I've seen him hit 95 with his heater. However, he's got to cut down on the free passes. It'll be interesting to see how Porter uses him out in the bully, particularly after his comments.

I'll not link it here, but JdJO has a piece on Harrell today that appears to be pretty accurate about him being immature and stubborn. A scout was quoted too. It might be that Harrell let his marginal success last season make him believe that he was a big leaguer who didn't need any coaching. That's usually when you need coaching the most in my experience, having rebelled against coaches myself. Harrell would do well to STFU and come out throwing gas from the bully.

I read that yesterday and upon seeing who authored it immediately thought maybe Harrell is being vilified for some immature comments he made when his head wasn't in the right place. Should he have kept his mouth shut? Certainly. Does that make him a bad person or some kind of a pariah? I don't think so. As always fuck JdJO.

I haven't read it, nor will I... but... Harrell has been mouthing off to the press quote a bit this season, and my general take on him is pretty much what Happy's was.

The thought occurred to me last night during the game that, hopefully, Harrell will take advantage of the golden opportunity to listen to El Presidente down in the bully, who can give him some very wise words about how to act on the mound. That guy was a machine who was the consummate professional. The camera shot away to the bully early in the game, and Harrell and El Presidente were in fact talking. I take that as a good sign.

Joe Pepitone for 1B, Sonny Jackson or Dickie Thon for SS and maybe Tommy Helms for 2B. Some of those guys weren't really that much of head cases, but they sprang to mind as "free spirits".

Everett is front and center on the list.

Also, is this a list of true "head cases" or just people who are/were a little wacky in the head?  If the latter, there's no former Astro loonier than Luke Scott.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I don't remember C4 being much of a headcase while he was here, though he certainly made up for it after the fact.  What I remember about Bell was his freaking out about not batting 2nd in the lineup, or maybe batting 2nd in the lineup.

Luke Scott's another who really came into his own after he left Houston.

If the head case category includes free spirit, then the Red Rooster goes to the top of the list. I don't think anybody in Astros' history was screwier than Rader. John Bateman and Turk Farrell deserve mention.

No love for Joaquin Andujar?
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Ensberg's bat should be the DH.

Valverde was quite a character. And wasn't Mitch Williams an Astro for a little while?

The list kinda falls off after these guys, unless you want to get into the Don Wilson / Ken Caminiti types of players.

Did someone already mention Candaele? I mean, just in terms of nutty kooks he'd have to rank pretty high.

I always thought Candaele was more of a "character"...a prankster who's favorite band was the Beat Farmers.  Is that really all that kooky?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.
