Crap, used yesterday's lineup...  Thanks for the heads-up.  Funny thing is, I didn't pay particular attention to Bud being in as SP, rather, was wondering why the heck Cedeno was getting another day in the lineup after yesterdays craptacular performance... Yes, one of those weeks...

I think Heck's legacy will turn out to be a good one in a couple of years.

Not sure I'd agree with that... A lot of his high picks have already proven to be big whiffs, and some are well on the way to becoming so as well...

2008: rd 2- Jay Austin; rd. 4- TJ Steele;
2009: rd 1- Jio Mier; rd.2- Tanner Bushue; rd.3 - Telvin Nash (there is still time for one of these youngsters to turn things around, but they need to do so in a hurry and it is looking pretty doubtful as to one or more of 'em); rd.4- BJ Hyatt;
2010:  rd.1 supp- Kvasnicka

Not ready to write him off, and he's still grinding it out, but time isn't on his side (that, and he's probably 4th on the Astros MiLB depth chart behind Villar/Correa/Fontana).

Lyles finished B7 with 107 and tied a career high with 10-strikeouts and retired the last 11 batters that he has faced.  That said... I think it is a safe bet that Porter will go to the pen for B8...

No numbers for Houston yet, but 3rd overall pick Gray signed with the Rockies for $4.8M ($800K under slot). FWIW, I don't know that HOU has any particularly difficult signs this year (Clemens notwithstanding).

Great PBP, guys, couldn't watch, couldn't listen, started reading 30 mins ago just to catch up.  Cheers!

Johnstros, you rock! I fell asleep listening to the game, but I just read your detailed PBP. Thank you!

Not sure I'd agree with that... A lot of his high picks have already proven to be big whiffs, and some are well on the way to becoming so as well...

2008: rd 2- Jay Austin; rd. 4- TJ Steele;
2009: rd 1- Jio Mier; rd.2- Tanner Bushue; rd.3 - Telvin Nash (there is still time for one of these youngsters to turn things around, but they need to do so in a hurry and it is looking pretty doubtful as to one or more of 'em); rd.4- BJ Hyatt;
2010:  rd.1 supp- Kvasnicka

This is an unfair assessment.  well more than half of all first round picks flop, let alone second, third and fourth rounders.  You got to judge Heck by the picks that succeed not the ones that fail.  (Maybe not top 10 picks though)  Those you would like to see succeed more often than not.

I don't think it's Wednesdays, I think it's Sphinx.  From here on out he should write all of the recaps.

Not sure how many, All stars/front end rotation, regulars/mid-to-back end rotation/closer, utility/middle relief players you should expect from one draft but:

2008
Castro - Likely a regular
Lyles - Possibe Allstar
Shuck - Utility player

Still not done yet: Seaton, Luis Cruz, Simunic, Rene Garcia

I'd rate this draft good.

2009 (not Hecks best moment)
Keuchel - I still think he can service as a more permanent back end rotation (not there yet)
JD Martinez - He's a regular now but only because of the team he's on.  Should rate as a high as a utlility player though.

Still not done yet: Mier, Bushue, Nash, Meyer, Wikoff, Enrique Hernandez, Erik Castro, Goebbert

I'd rate this draft poor.  Would require a real late turnaround from Mier/Nash/Bushue/Meyer to bring this one out of the hole.

2010
Nobody in the majors yet but not surprising since 3 of the top 4 were HS

DeShields - Still a potential all star
Folty - potential front of rotation
Velasquez - potential front of rotation
Wates - likely to at least get Utility role at some point
Doran - Could see middle relief or bust
Roberto Pena - long ways to go but improving
Buchanan - mid-to-back end rotation still possible
Alex Sogard - possible middle releif

Not done yet: Shirley, Robinson, Jordan Scott, Jamaine Cotton, Chis Wallace,

I'd rate this draft very good at this point with the possibility to get better or worse

2011
Springer - potential all star
Houser - long ways to go
Jack Armstrong - been a long wait to see him toss a pitch
Tropeano - potential mid-to-back end rotation

Plethora of  folks that haven't defined their career either way

Too early to rate

2012 - considered to be one of the best drafts of all time.   Can't rate yet for obvious reasons.

ETA.  Prior to 2012, Heck had only an 8th, 10th and 11th overall pick.

I agree with you on 2008.

I agree with you on 2009 but am not holding out any hope for very late blossoming.

2010 you forgot one big whiff, Kvasnicka.  Still, a good draft up to now.

2011 I'd say a good draft to this point.  I don't think Armstrong will throw many pitches again.

MLBTR had a "Prospect Rumor Roundup: Astros First Rounders" today, that I thought interesting given the discussion in this thread.  LINK

Shouldn't he have to see a lot more data before he concludes

Quote
The last two-plus years of mediocrity in Houston have allowed the organization to receive the first overall draft picks in both 2012 and 2013. An astute group of talent evaluators and baseball minds in the scouting department has helped to ensure the organization not only made the most of its first overall selections, but also made some clever trades for young talent while shedding players that did not figure into the rebuilding vision

He has no idea if they "made the most" of those selections and it seems way to early to classify any of the trades as clever or not.  Right now, only Dominguez stands out as a trade where the Astros clearly won.  Some of the others may yet turn golden, but they might also be crap.

Perhaps I shouldn't be so critical of 2009.  Other than this guy called Trout.  There isn't a whole lot to get excited about at 21 and later.  Nor really that much before it.

Seriously?  The list of players drafted 1 and S1 after 21 who will do more at the major league level than Mier is at at least 10.

I said get excited about.  Other than Trout do you have 10 guys to get excited about in those 28?  In other words at minimum be more than a utility player/middle reliever.

(not out of the realm of possibility that Mier ends up being a utility guy for a some team for a few years.  He is supposed to be major league ready defensively now)

I bet Mier has a decent ML career. Gets in enough years for a pension whether starter or not. Maybe a starter for a good offensive team for a year or two or more likely, like you said, a utility role.
