MLB.tv Free Game of the Day.

MLB.tv Free Game of the Day.

Living 4 1/2 hours away puts me in the black out zone for the Braves games so no luck for me.  Enjoying the radio feed though

Superstition is for weak minds.  If anyone here actually thinks that mentioning a no hitter will break up said no hitter, you're not a terribly intelligent person, I'm sorry.

Sure it is.  I've always felt this was a place for grown ups discussing grown up things, even if it's just baseball.  There are tons of posts I disagree with, but I'd never hide somebody just because I disagreed with their opinion on baseball/music/cigars/scotch/etc.

If you think you're throwing a no-hitter because no one mentions it...or because you wear women's underwear...or because you're getting laid or because you're not getting laid, then you ARE.  And everyone should know that.

No you're not.  You're throwing a no hitter because you're using your skills to get batters out, not because of some sort of magic.  Magical thinking does not equal no hitter.

Why do I care whether Teheran's no-hitter is jinxed?  If it were an Astros pitcher I'd get it, but not some random game on a Tuesday afternoon in June--I don't understand.

That movie was funny as shit.  Lots of good stuff.  Most of it was pretty unrealistic.  No catcher tells the hitter what pitch is coming.  The manager doesn't get mad and throw bats into the shower.  No one calls it "The Show".  The magic word is not "cocksucker".  About the only true anecdote in the movie is that players on a streak, respect the streak.  So quit being a douchebag.

Tony D'Annunzio: Another Rob Roy, Bishop?
Bishop: You never ask a navy man if he'll have another drink, because it's nobody's goddamned business how much he's had already.
Judge Smails: Wrong, you're drinking too much your Excellency.
Bishop: Excellency, fiddlesticks, my name's Fred and I'm a man, same as you.
Judge Smails: You're not a man, you're a bishop, for God's sakes.

Let's suppose for a second that magic exists, and there is a Braves pitcher throwing a no-hitter against some random team, and that if I, NeilT, utter the words no-hitter to some third party it's going to blow the no-hitter, why don't I immediately go mention to he first stranger that I pass?  I'd do that in a heartbeat.  I hate the Braves, NL though they may be.

Honestly that's all I said.  Do people really believe that there's some deity up there that pays attention to who is thorwing a no hitter and if any random fan who says the phrase "no hitter" will be punished by having their team lose said no hitter?  I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that anyone that thinks that is a dumbass.

Don't forget to kick a puppy on the way home.

OK, I admit I've gone against the grain here.  If you all want to vilify me, have fun. My point in this thread was that it's really stupid to not say someone has a no hitter.  I stand by that.  If you think saying it out loud changes the result of any given game, I say you have real issues with reality.

If you have a problem with that I say fuck you.  Hide me.

Since I sorta started this, let me be clear.  I do not in any way shape or form believe what I say on a board, out loud, in a text or in a sweet nothing in my wife's ear will impact the outcome of a game.  I was attempting to be cute in the title by referencing the superstition.  It is been done around here multiple times.  If you couldn't infer from -Teheran has a very good game going. - that it was either a no-no or a perfect game - why do you think I was drawing attention to it?

Apparently PeteM doesn't like subtly in the title of threads.  That is his right.  And based on the quotes I am seeing from him, I was correct in my previous assessment that he is an argumentative jerk who drifts off point and dissolves into personal attacks. Therefore I will keep him on ignore - as is my right.

That's hilarious.  I'm a big fan of mistaken identity, especially when used in anger.

Pete, I think the issue is that obviously nobody seriously believes the superstition and to angrily make the case that nobody should believe the superstition is pretty pointless, because nobody does.  It's a simple matter of cultural tradition, like tossing spilled salt over your left shoulder or southerners saying weird things like "The Devil is beating his wife" when there is rainstorm while it is still sunny when the Germans are clearly correct that in such occasions "the witches are brewing their tea."

I contend that it DID matter.  You going to such great lengths to do things the same way put you in the correct frame of mind come game time.  Adhering to small superstitions that have yielded positive results puts your mind at ease, so when the task of playing the game is at hand you are focused on the game, not the fact that your left sock is not inside out.

The difference there, as sporadic notes, is that you're the person who's actually doing the thing that you're trying to control so that actually does have some affect.

Vegetarian chili is not possible. It's like non-alcoholic vodka.

Just out of curiosity, what are we permitted to call it?
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Chili sin carne.
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

I have a vegetarian cousin who was visiting Austin last year, heard about Franklin's, and was looking forward to seeing how good their "vegetarian BBQ" was.  I told her she might as well try dividing by zero while she was waiting in line.

Spicy vegetables?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Sorry, "chili sin carne" is the winner.

25 years ago? I'm now depressed. Great flick though...just watched it the other day.
