College World Series
« on: May 28, 2013, 01:31:58 pm »
I only saw three Texas teams in the field of 64, Rice, Texas A&M, and Texas.  That's different.  No TCU?  No Baylor?  Wait, wait, is that Texas, or is that UT San Antonio?  What am I missing?  Apparently A&M snuck in because they were well-represented on the selection committee, not that that makes any difference.

Go UTSA!

They'll be good in 2015.

My Tigers beat the No. 1 in the SEC Tournament and only wind up the No. 4 seed. WTF???

Nice win by Rice....only unseeded team to take down a seeded team.

I think that LSU has Oklahoma in the Super-Regionals.

LSU had trouble with Gray, but we solved him in the eighth inning and beat the Sooners 2-0. Aaron Nola outpitched Gray, whose slider looked pretty damn good last night. We knew about his cheese. However, that slider is great too.

Tigers pummel Oklahoma 11-1 to go back to the CWS for the first time since 2009. Jacoby Jones was 4-4 yesterday.

Sadly, my Owls screwed the pooch in the ninth. After scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the inning, they walked the lead-off batter in the bottom of the ninth, threw the ball away on a steal of second (although the runner didn't advance), then threw the ball away on a pick-off attempt at 2nd and he *did* advance, then gave up the tying run on a squeeze play, then hit a batter, and then gave up a hit to plate the winning run. They may have accidentally got an out in there somehow, but I wasn't seeing very clearly by that point.

Not getting an out on the squeeze killed them. It's REALLY hard to get the out at home, especially when it's bunted past the pitcher. Failure to get that out gave NC State the opportunity for a 2-out hit to win the game, instead of going to the 10th.

And another thing...

I think I've seen the ugliest collection of baseball uniforms in history this weekend.  Florida State wearing gold suits that would embarrass Elvis.  North Carolina with some bizarre blue camouflage.  North Carolina State channeling the '70's White Sox.  And Louisville with hideous red and pink rainbow guts.  Thankfully, Rice maintains a little dignity.  But yeah...when you're dressed like a clown...

Yeah, what is up with the resurrection of the White Sox unis? It was not a good look.

A little over seven hours ago, I started watching the Rice game. They're now in the 17th, and I have to go to bed.

NC State got a run in T17.  Its B17 now, and Rice has a runner on 1B with  one out (batter was trying to bunt, pulled his bat back for two called strikes. Got rung out on a pitch that looked outside, but the ump called a couple of times in that same AB).

Rice leaves runners on the corners and loses 6-5 in 17.

For the first time since 1990 there will not be a team from either Florida or Texas is the CWS.

That's really unbelievable. Those states always are prominent in Omaha.

And only one team from California.  And the Big 10 represents for the first time in 30 years.

I found myself in a bit of a surreal spot this weekend... in Houston, surrounded by relatives who are Mississippi State fans. They politely admired Rice until the bitter end, however.

And UCLA wins it. if LSU had to lose to anyone, I'm glad that it was to the ultimate winner.
