Position Summary Pitching (Relievers)
« on: May 06, 2013, 05:54:13 am »
End of April and a business trip gives me some time on my hands, so … early season positional analysis:  Relief Pitchers.

Houston
The bullpen has been called on way too early and way too often, throwing 105 innings over the first 27 games.  Worse, it seems they often make matters worse for the starter … I wish I had stats on inherited runners scored, because it seems like most of them do.  I’m not going to go into much detail here, since most readers already know the MLB stuff.  I will point out, though, that three prospects, Paul Clemens, Jose Cisnero and Dallas Keuchel all looked pretty good (or maybe just less bad), though Keuchel got caught in the numbers game and was sent down to OKC briefly.

Oklahoma City
The bullpen at OKC has consisted of Jose Valdez (the closer, with 7 saves and only 8 hits and 3 walks in 12.2 IP), Kyle Hallock, Kevin Chapman, Josh Zeid, CJ Fick, Eric Berger and Lance Day.  The last three have struggled, and Day has been sent back to EST in the recent shuffling.  Zeid (2.61 ERA and 15K in 10.1 IP) and Chapman (2.19 ERA and 13K in 12.1 IP) had very nice Aprils.

Corpus Christi
The bullpen at AA has been excellent.  Alex Sogard has yet to allow an earned run, and only Pat Urckfitz (2.79) has an ERA over 2.  The workload has been spread fairly evenly among closer Jason Stoffel (1.23 ERA, 5 saves, and 7K’s in 7.1 IP without a walk),  Urckfitz (6G, 9.2 IP), Sogard (7G, 8.1 IP), Jorge De Leon (1.17 ERA, 4G, 7.2 IP) and Andrew Robinson (1.93 ERA, 5G, 4.2 IP).  I am especially pleased to see De Leon’s progress this year.  His K-rate is down, but he has walked only 1 and generally seems to have turned a corner, though one month is not much of a sample size.

Lancaster
The bullpen in Lancaster has been in a bit of flux.  Carlos Quevedo appeared in 2 games before being promoted to AA, and Kenny Long has appeared in 2 games since joining the team out of EST.  Thommy Shirley has been used very sparingly (3.2 IP) and has not fared well (9.82 ERA and 1.909 WHIP with 3BB and only 1K).  The four mainstays, Blair Walters (not counting 1 late-April start), Travis Ballew, Jonas Dufek and Theron Geith) have each pitched 7.2 innings.  Ballew has been impressive as the closer, with 3 saves and 17 K (a rate of 20 per 9IP).  Dufek has struggled, giving up 12 hits (3 HR).  Walters moved into the rotation in late April, so perhaps one of the others woill start to get more chances.

Quad Cities
Three of the bullpen staff in Quad Cities (Gera Sanchez, Mitch Lambson & John Neely) have gotten the most work, with over 10 IP each.  Cameron Lamb and Michael Dimock (a late arrival out of EST) have about 2/3 that many IP, while Kyle Hallock made one early-season appearance before being promoted to OKC.  Dimock has been in the right place at the right time, posting a 3-0 record in 6 appearances, while Neely leads the team in saves with 3.  I expect there is some talent here, but it is hard to get too excited about low-A relievers.  Maybe someone with first-hand exposure can tell us who we should be watching here.

An early June business trip gives me another opportunity (after a short delay) to look at positional analysis after month #2:  Relief Pitchers.

Houston
The bullpen again logged over 100IP in May, and I continue to have the impression that inherited runners score way too often.  Jose Cisnero seems to have settled into long relief, with 15.1 May IP in only 6 appearances.  Paul Clemens logged the most relief innings (16.2), while Travis Blakley & Hector Ambriz each had 15 appearances.   Jose Veras went 0-3 but with 7 saves as the closer, while Wesley Wright managed to hit 3 batters and allow 16 base hits in only 9IP over 14 appearances.  At least he didn’t walk anyone.  And last but not least, Edgar Gonzalez and his 7.20 ERA went on the DL.

Oklahoma City
Jose Valdez continues to close at OKC, though he was not quite as effective in May as he was in April.  The rest of the bullpen consists of Jason Stoffel (the workhorse and very effective after his promotion from CC), Eric Berger, Josh Zeid, Rhiner Cruz (demoted from Houston), Kevin Chapman, Alex Sogard (unscored upon after his promotion from CC), and CJ Fick (who spent much of the month on the DL).  Chapman seems to have lost command, with 12BB in 9.2 IP after a much more effective April.  He still has more than 1K/IP though.  The rest of the bullpen was fairly effective in May.

Corpus Christi
After an excellent April, the bullpen in May has fallen on hard times.  Part of that comes from missing Sogard (who had 3 effective appearances in May) and Stoffel who were promoted to OKC.  No real closer emerged in May and six players (including rehabber Josh Fields) appeared 5 or more times in relief:  Pat Urckfitz ( 8 ), Jorge DeLeon (7), Andrew Robinson (7), Kenny Long (7), Matt Heidenrech (5) and Fields.  Sergio Escalona was activated late in the month and appeared twice.  Only Fields and Escalona were effective.  Especially disappointing to me was DeLeon’s regression to the norm; walks are up again (7 compared to 1 last month) and 3 HR allowed in 16.2 IP do not help.

Lancaster
Even with an effective piggyback rotation, the bullpen in Lancaster gets plenty of work.  Closer Travis Ballew pitched 12.2 innings over 11 appearances notching 6 saves.  Jonas Dufek (12G; 15.1IP) and Theron Geith (10G; 15.1IP) are the other workhorses.  Dufek & Ballew each struck out 18 batters for pretty impressive K-rates.  Michael Dimock has been effective in 3 appearances since being promoted from Quad Cities, and Kenny Long was unscored upon in 4 appearances before being promoted to Corpus Christi.

Quad Cities
Four members of the Quad Cities bullpen got at least 10IP in May.  All 4 had pretty impressive K-rates, too:  closer John Neely (6 saves; 11K in 11.1IP), Gera Sanchez (14K & 1BB in 12.2IP), Mitch Lambson (13K but 10BB in 11.2IP) and Cameron Lamb (10K in 10.1IP).  Lamb was promoted to Lancaster in early June, joining Michael Dimock, who struck out 8 in 5.2IP before his mid-May promotion.  Richard Rodriguez joined the team from EST late in the month.  Dimock closed out his “career” in lo-A with a 5-0 record and 15K in 11.2IP.

If you would, play 'relief pitcher shuffle' and tell me who you'd prefer to see in the HOU pen from the MiLB ranks (and in place of who from the MLB ranks).  Feel free to include MiLB starters who you think would make the MLB team better but who you think could benefit from seeing MLB time in the 'pen).  Thanks, I'll hang up and listen...

I think Valdez would be an improvement on most anyone in the Houston pen now except for Clemens.  Stoffel could probably compete there too.  All of the AAA starters look like starters to me ... I'd rather see them stay where they are until they can start in Houston.

I've seen about as much of Wesley Wright as I need to see, and am getting close to my Ambriz limit.  I think the real key at the MLB level, though, is to start getting 7 IP/start from a few guys to take the pressure off.  1 or maybe 2 guys who fail to go 6 can be managed, bit only Norris is even close to 7.

I've lost track of CJ Lo. I assume he's injured? Wasn't he at Corpus early in the season?

Stoffel could probably compete there too.

Was surprised they didn't protect him on the 40-man this year.  Also surprised he didn't get poached with the Rule 5 draft.  And then surprised yet again that he started the year at CC.  Must be something about this guy that people don't like.

He was in spring training and was listed on the CC DL to start the year.  I expect he is still in EST.
