Doing the comedy festival again this year.  Saw Bill Hader  along with Jared Logan and John Ramsey last night.  Tonight is Dana Carvey, Reggie Watts (he just looks funny) amd Amy Schumur tonight.  Bill Burr on Fraday and jim Gaffigan Saturday.  Rest on Sunday.  Anybody else going?

Mark often does that, but I do not know his schedule this year.

Funnier than SNL.  But then, genital warts is funnier than SNL these days.

I went to a few shows last night.

(Comedians I actually saw are bolded)

Saw:

7:30pm  |  The Parish Underground  |  DOUBLE TROUBLE
JR Brow, Billy D. Washington, James Adomian

Caught the tail end of:

8:15pm  |  New York, New York  |  COMIC BOOM
Bob Khosravi, Baron Vaughn, Dan St. Germain, David Angelo, Emily Heller,
     Mary Patterson, Michael Che

Next we checked out:

10:15pm  |  Velveeta Room  |  TRIPLE THREAT
John Tole, Christian Finnegan, Sean Patton, Myq Kaplan

And caught the tail end of:

10:45pm  |  Swan Dive  |  BLUE MOON
Maggie MacDonald, Lucas Molandes, Michael Priest, Joe DeRosa,
     Robert Hawkins, Julie Goldman

Overall, I saw one bad comedian. Robert Hawkins was FUCKING PUTRID.

Best in show last night: James Admonian, who went on before Billy D. Washington and crushed it so bad that Billy came out and just didn't even try to bring it. If you get a chance, SEE JAMES ADOMIAN! HE IS GREAT!

Everyone at the Triple Threat show that we caught was great. Christian Finnegan brought it as well, he was hilarious. Myk Kaplan is always great. Shawn Patton looks like fucking John Belushi (or as Joe DeRosa pointed out, like a fat Myk Kaplan. John Tole, who is a local guy (disregard that, not local), was REALLY damn funny too.

If people are interested, I'll gladly keep updating this. I'm planning on catching as many small room shows as  I can this week. Not too interested in the big names playing at Paramount.

Thanks Mark.  Please do keep this up.   We're kind of a lazy group during the week days.  Meet at the SFA foe beers and then the Paramount or Statside.

We're planning on trying to see Maria Bamford at Stateside early tonight.

We've got a later evening gameplan as well, but I can't recall who it is off the top of my head.

Mark

Also, I totally forgot about this guy, who we also saw last night - Puddles Pity Party.

http://www.austintheatre.org/site/PageServer?pagename=moontower_artists&id=2302

Basically a giant guy in a clown costume singing a depressing song with a girl dressed as a monkey as his sidekick. Guy has a pretty impressive voice. Caught me totally off guard, and I was laughing my ass off.

Thursday Lineup:

7:15pm  |  Stateside at the Paramount  |  MARIA BAMFORD
Maria Bamford, Jared Logan, Derek Phelps

Started the night off right with Maria Bamford, who is hilarious. Derek Phelps was terrible. Jared Logan started off meh, but finished decently. Maria Bamford was amazing. She's so weird, but funny.

8:00pm  |  The Hideout  |  TRIPLE THREAT
Danny Palumbo, Brendon Walsh, Baron Vaughn, Michael Che

Caught the tail end of this show. Saw the last few minutes of Baron Vaughn and then all of Brendon Walsh, who is a funny dude.

10:15pm  |  The Parish  |  FOUR EYES
Dom Irrera, Andy Kindler, The Lucas Brothers, Marc Maron,
     Bil Dwyer, Judah Friedlander

This show was GREAT! Dom Irrera was the host, and he was a riot. Andy Kindler was a little off his game, but still brought it. The Lucas Brothers were great. They have a slow, deliberate delivery that is really funny and a few REALLY great jokes. Marc Maron was great in his usual intense, slightly crazy way. Bil Dwyer was the only letdown in this group. He was pretty terrible. And Judah Friedlander was really funny. He singled me out to start with for my perfect clapping form, and told another dude in the front row to "get the fuck out of here" when he couldn't replicate my fantastic applause.

Overall, another great night of shows. The supporting acts weren't as great tonight, but the big namers still brought it. Dom Irrera stole the show as host tonight. He was really funny.

And Andy, I'm not currently planning to see Jim Norton, no.

As we were walking from Stateside to 6th Street, who should we come across looking (surprise surprise) forlorn standing on Congress in front of the Paramount, but Puddles the Clown again. He doesn't talk (it's part of his act, he only sings), but we stopped and told him how great he was when we saw him at Parish Underground the night before and what a great voice he has. He gave my girlfriend a pack of tissues with his website/logo on it, then proceeded to give me an Italian-style kiss on either cheek. There is something a little off-putting but hilarious about a 6 foot 5 clown laying a few kisses on you.

When we got to Parish for the late show last night, surprise! Puddles was the opener again. It was great being in on the act this time and knowing what was going on. People's reactions when he started belting out his songs were great.

Some youtube of Puddles.

What an act.  Amazing voice indeed.  Lynchian.

The video does no justice to just how huge the guy is. I hope we run in to him again, I'd like to get a picture with this dude.

After a little internet research, Puddles is 6 foot 8, not 5.

Tonight's Agenda (subject to change):

7:30pm  |  The Parish Underground  |  TRIPLE THREAT
Pat Hazell, Sean O'Connor, Godfrey, James Adomian

(I REALLY want to see Adomian again just to see if he kills it as bad as he did Wednesday night)

And we're going to attempt to go to:

9:45pm  |  Stateside at the Paramount  |  WTF PODCAST LIVE
Marc Maron, Bill Burr, Jim Norton, Dom Irrera, Janeane Garofalo, Michael Ian Black,
     Maria Bamford, Todd Barry

I suspect the line is going to be out of control for the podcast.

He was in the bar at the SFA between shows.   Big guy.  Someone that big in a clown outfit is scary.

Also, just thought I'd mention how many other comedians were watching this show:

I saw Brian Posehn, Godfrey, John Tole, Bill Heder, and a few more I'm forgetting right now. Marc Maron came out to watch Puddles perform and had the most confused look on his face I've ever seen. It was hilarious.

Friday's Lineup was:

7:30pm  |  The Parish Underground  |  TRIPLE THREAT
Pat Hazell, Sean O'Connor, Godfrey, James Adomian

I'm happy to report that I didn't just catch James Adomian on a good night Wednesday night. He KILLED again with about 25 percent different material. Pat Hazell was the host, he was decent. Sean O'Connor was REALLY funny. And Godfrey is Godfrey, he was great. Energetic, ridiculous, and fun to watch.

Then we hustled to Stateside to see:

9:45pm  |  Stateside at the Paramount  |  WTF PODCAST LIVE
Marc Maron, Bill Burr, Jim Norton, Dom Irrera, Janeane Garofalo, Michael Ian Black,
     Maria Bamford, Todd Barry

This was just Marc Maron's podcast being recorded live, but oh man, it was GREAT. Bill Burr's set ran late and he didn't make it, but the rest of the group did.

You don't really think about stuff like this, but watching Maria Bamford and Todd Barry react to Jim Norton's disgustingly hilarious stories was probably the highlight of this whole thing. Check out the podcast if you get a chance. I was HOWLING laughing throughout it.

Sad the last night is already upon us. This has been a REALLY great festival, comedy-wise.

This the first time I've gotten to fully enjoy Moontower. We went to a few events last year, but this year, we've seen 25+ comics in 3 days. It's been fantastic, and I've had a great time.

I definitely recommend it for anyone that enjoys stand up.

After we saw Judah Friedlander Friday he hung out the SFA bar with us for awhile.  He gave me a World Champion 4 prez sticker.  He's a dark black belt you know.  Highlights for me were Godfrey, Bill Burr, Judah and Gaffigan.   Awesome festival.

My Best in Moontower show:

Guys I've never heard of that were amazing:

James Adomian

Michael Che

Sean O'Conner

The Lucas Brothers

Guys I Like That Killed

Myq Kaplin

Joe DeRosa

Dom Irrera

Andy Kindler

Kyle Kinane

Christian Finnegan

Godfrey

Marc Maron

Absolutely Terrible

Robert Hawkins

Bill Dwyer

And the Oddity of the Festival of course goes to Puddles.

Godfrey was great when we saw him at Parish Underground. What did you think about John Tole and Puddles? I bet his voice was awesome in a proper theater.

Puddles has an incredible voice.  The acoustics in the Statesdie are good, but the Paramount woulkd have been cool.   The monkey woman masturbating a banana was strange.

Hahaha, yeah. The monkeywoman (Monkeyzuma is her stage name, I suspect it's probably his wife) was a little weird, but really, they were the true "Oddity" of Moontower.

Here's Puddles in all his HD glory:
