World Baseball Classic

Who is watching?  It has been pretty awesome waking up to the games in Asia every morning this week, especially this morning's game.  USA gets underway tonight with Dickey on the mound bs Mexico.

I didn't really watch in 06 or 09 but I am intrigued this year.  But that may just be my thirst for anything baseball right now.

I was watching USA-Mexico for a little while, but Dickey wasn't really fooling anybody. Right now it's 5-1 Mexico, and I haven't seen any reason to believe that there's a comeback in the offing.

Meh.  Hard for me to get behind this in its current format/timing...

In the wake of the void, finding the WBC pretty compelling. Amazing atmosphere for the games in Japan and the USA-MEX game was packed to the gill's. Some good match ups between team mates too, last night Gallardo against Pencil Faced Dick Nose, Fernando bench coaching for Mexico, etc. Likey.

Canada and Mexico brawl in WBC match-up. They're our neighbors, why can't they get along?

I blame that brawl totally on the goofy tiebreaker system that the WBC uses. It encourages, indeed requires, a team to run up the score. When teams are up by more than a comfortable margin in the late innings and are still doing things like bunting and swiping bases, it doesn't take much of that type of showing up to piss off the other team, who will retaliate by having their pitcher dot a guy.

It's the Canadians naturally sour and belligerent dispositions.

Went to last night's game  (US vs. Italy). It was nice to see my first in-person grand slam from a team I was rooting for.

It's definitely a weird vibe at the game. We were all rooting for the same team, yet we were all wearing opposing team jerseys.

What is this shit??!

Quote
Extra Innings
For any inning beginning with the 13th inning, the Federation Team at bat shall begin the inning with runners on first and second base. The batter who leads off an inning shall continue to be the batter who would lead off the inning in the absence of this extrainnings rule. The runner on first base shall be the player (or a substitute for such player) in the batting order immediately preceding the batter who leads off the inning. The runner on second base shall be the player (or a substitute for such player) in the batting order immediately preceding the runner on first base. By way of example, if the #5 hitter in the batting order is due to lead off the 13th inning, the #3 player in the batting order (or a pinchrunner for such player) shall begin the inning on second base and the #4 player in the batting order (or a pinch-runner for such player) shall begin the inning on first base. Any runner or batter removed from the game for a substitute shall be ineligible to return to the game, as is the case in all circumstances under the Official Baseball Rules. For purposes of calculating earned runs under the Official Baseball Rule 10.16(b), the runners who begin an inning on first and second base pursuant to this rule each shall be deemed to be runners who have reached first base because of a fielding error, but no error shall be charged to the opposing Federation Team or to any player.

Well, it's arguably better than Bud sitting there just shrugging his shoulders. And it does lend another interesting dimension to double-switch strategy.

Wasn't that Texas vs. Mexico (or arguably Mexico vs. Mexico)? US vs. Mexico was in the one in California.

Right.  Zach Taylor was manager of the US team, and Jim Polk the GM.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.
