I read that Cedeno is to be SS1. Not sure I like that. I'd like to see what they have in Gonzalez.

I disagree. Cedeno could be a perfect no. 2 hitter behind Altuve. Marwin will get some chances.

Greene was beat out by Marwin Gonzalez, but the Astros signed Cedeno to platoon at the position and provide some veteran leadership with Gonzalez and second baseman Jose Altuve.
Quote
"Tyler did a good job for us last year as part of this team," Luhnow said. "He's got value. He's a Major League player and I think it's more the emergence of Marwin, feeling that after Marwin spent all year with the club last year and the things he's been able to show us this spring, being a switch-hitter, being very solid defensively, being able to play third base, second base, shortstop. I think all of that led us to feel Marwin beat out Tyler for a position on the team."
Link
I think they still think pretty highly of Marwin.

And sorry, Happy, I disagree, I don't think Cedeno is a good enough hitter to bat 2nd. But I'm glad they signed him.

I didn't say that he was an ideal no. 2 hitter; what I meant was that with his substantial big league experience and demonstrated ability to do the little things like taking a pitch, bunting and hitting behind a runner, who better in this lineup of misfits to hit in that position? I'll hang up and listen, but I'll be interested in hearing your alternative. Alternatively, Cedeno would be an acceptable No. 8 or No. 9.

Don't make me sit down and figure out a lineup with this team. Too depressing.

I think I saw Wallace mentioned as the likely #2 hitter, vs RHP at least. I supposed if you don't have a real #2 hitter, may as well start your middle of the order. And Wallace has shown decent on-base ability.

The lineup is probably going to a moving target each day, as Porter will consider who's pitching and who needs to play that day to stay sharp. I guess that the only constant will be Altuve at leadoff, and the middle of the order will probably consist of Carter, Pena and Wallace, with Ankiel probably in the six hole. After that, it's a guessing game until we see Porter's tendencies and who's got the hot bat.

Actually, that's potentially a better lineup than we trotted out there last year. I might rearrange the bottom three hitters, but I think that you've come pretty close.

OK, fine.

Altuve
Wallace
Carter
Pena
Maxwell
Ankiel (Barnes 8th vs. LHP)
Dominguez
Castro
Gonzalez/Cedeno

At least it goes LRLR very nicely.

I'd like to see Castro in the 5th/6th spot considering how well he's been hitting this spring.

Yeah, I'm cautiously hoping for a nice leap forward for him this year hitting- and defense-wise. But perhaps they wouldn't want to put that pressure on him right away? At least not the 5th spot. Hit him 6th or 7th so he can concentrate on shoring up his defense without the pressure of having to be An RBI Guy.

I haven't heard much about his defense this spring, only his bat.  Any reports of improvement behind the plate?

Despite everyone crying about cutting payroll, I think the 2013 Astros will be better than the 2012 Astros.

He still looks pretty leaky on balls in the dirt. He's still stabbing at the ball in the dirt instead of blocking it to keep it in front of you like you are supposed to do.

I expect them to be better, but mainly due to leadership rather than talent.  Witness the post-Mills portion of last year.

I think both the outfield and infield are more talented than last year. The pitching is a big question mark.

If Humber, Norris and Harrell pitch like each is capable, we should be okay there. The question marks are in the last two starting slots and some of the bully.

Ronny Cedeno, who is taking Greene's place. Definitely an upgrade in the field and at the plate.

Thanks.  I knew the 50-game suspension didn't apply specifically to ST games, but I thought his overall participation would be stunted as well.

He's drawn some attention, especially with that last frozen rope to CF over Span's head. If he can just stay off of the pot, he's got a very bright future. Easier said than done.

So in the battle for the final rotation spot White goes 5IP, 9H, 4ER, 2BB, 2K.  I'm guessing Peacock goes in one of the Wednesday split squad games.

The game is on YES in Houston.

Astros put a three spot on CC in the top of the first, garnering four hits, three of which were doubles. 3- Bottom 1

3-0 Astros top 4, as Corporan nails Gardner trying to steal 2B to end the inning. Terrific throw.

Barnes throws out the would-be go-ahead run for the 3rd out of the inning. He seemed a little lackadaisical about the throw, but it was right on the money.

I only saw one inning. He's not overpowering, seemed to be working on location pretty well. He got popups and groundouts when I saw him, didn't hang the ball out over the plate.

Changed speeds real well and worked both sides of the plate. Corporan/Brocail called a good game for him. He pitches to contact and won't miss too many bats.

The kids (Correa, Singleton and Springer) are starting today against the steM. Correa singled up the middle and stole 2B in the first inning, but Niese struck out three in that frame to strand him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think MLB tests for it (or suspends). Singleton got hit with his 50-gamer only because he's a minor leaguer. And it's not classified as a PED, it's a "drug of abuse".

You're right.  I was trying to make the distinction between drug of abuse and PED and forgot that non-PED drug testing is only in the minors.  Thanks for the correction.

Another difference is that a first PED positive test results in a 50 game suspension, whereas the "drugs of abuse" 50 game suspension comes after a second (or later?) violation.

So theoretically, he could be suspended for 50 games in the minor leagues but not in the major league?

Good question... I dunno. But in any case, there's no real reason to bring him up now. He's only 21 years old, hasn't played above AA at all, and in the meantime they can determine if Wallace is a keeper. Not to mention, the whole "service time clock" thing.

Sorry, I know you were asking theoretically, I just decided to give a literal response to mask the fact that I don't actually know what I'm talking about with the suspension stuff.

White runs into too many bats in the first frame and surrenders three earnies. He's got good stuff but just catches too much plate.

Is Pena at bat supposed to be better than a pitcher at bat?

Get used to Pena striking out a lot. And hitting under .200. So, not too much different than a pitcher.

I sure hope they don't forget to put the names on the jerseys.

They won't, because CraneCo wants you to buy a $10 game program.

When asked to respond to Ron Brand's and Mr. Happy's comments, Crane responded as follows: "It doesn't bother me that people like Ron Brand and Mr. Happy want me to spend more money, but it's not their money it's mine. Mine. MINE I TELL YOU. This is a private company, even though I intend to bilk the public out of cash every chance I get.  If Ron Brand and Mr. Happy want to write a check for 10 bucks for every name I have to put on a jersey this season, they can give me a call.  I should warn them, however, that I plan on trading anything of value at any time and shuffling league-minimum has-beens, will-never-be's, and/or minor leaguers on and off the roster throughout the season to keep my costs down so it could get very, very, expensive for Ron Brand and Mr. Happy."
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

I wondered about that. One of the guys at work was taking his two boys to those games. I couldn't believe it when he told me that they were playing baseball in the Alamodome. I figured it was going to be 250' down one line and 400' down the other.

Sorry, I thought it was Sparks. Ashby fell down some stairs and broke a couple of ribs, so he's been off for a few days. He's supposed to be back Sunday.

I guess you can see how closely I've been paying attention.

'Splain please. [The only part of tonight's game that I've seen was the 3-run shot from Marwin, so I'm not quite sure what you mean.]

Plus, his fielding has been suspect.

The difference between White and Peacock is that when Peacock is in trouble and needs to make a pitch, he does it.

Why were they letting him throw? If it is elbow tendonitis, which I used to get every spring, you have to shut it down for a couple of days.

I think he said that he always gets it and he tried to pitch through it but it kept getting worse. You know how pitchers are, especially when they're trying to make the team.

He's been very impressive for two innings. Better than advertised except for the Sparky-love.

96s and 97s on the fastball. Faster than I remember him throwing in the past. Throwing out of the pen doesn't hurt, but that's a good 3-4 MPH faster.

I was expecting eyewitness reports but apparently it's impossible to get any sort of cell signal in there with the crowd.

He had a real bad year at Lexington and was sent down to Greeneville, where he was better but still not good. He made it back to Lexington late last year and showed some improvement, and he's been reassigned to Lexington this season. He'll be 22 in June.

Thanks. I seem to recall that he had some back trouble (cracked vertebra?). I wonder if his regression was due to that, or if he just doesn't have what it takes.

A cracked vertebra would slow me down. I hadn't heard that. I think with the infusion of talent into the organization he is pretty an afterthought.

Is Pena at bat supposed to be better than a pitcher at bat?

Don't expect much out of Pena on Opening Day. Career wise, he's 0-8 against Harrison with four K's. I think that Bud could outperform that.

I saw him against the Mets.  He cut off a would-be-gapper.  It was a athletic play.  Didn't look lumbering at all.
