12-27: Holiday Bowl, Baylor v. UCLA

Kick off in 90 minutes... Sic 'Em (Baylor) Bears!!! [Misc. note to BU Football:  Not sure this counts as the favor you owe Mr. Corleone, but I'd ask that you send he and Mrs. Corleone home happy for good measure. Just sayin'...]

Shit, I forgot the game was last night.  Saw UCLA a few times near the end of the year.  Seemed like a good team.

Congrats to Baylor.  Impressive.

In Vegas now, but didn't see the entire game. BU made UCLA look like kindergarteners. I dunno what Baylor did, but they found somethin. Magic, spark, motivation, hookers, something.

Congrats to Rice for whoopin' AFA. That was a nice-looking win.

Syracuse and WVU are freezing their tochas off in Yankee Stadium at the moment. I wouldn't want to be there. 30 degrees, wind and snow. Eek.

Watching the first 20 minutes, I was afraid that the Air Force running game would grind the Owls down by the end of the game. But they figured something out and got their own offense going (and stopped putting the ball on the ground) and got a nice win.

Tulsa (smallest enrollment of any Football Bowl Subdivision program) beat up on Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl to finish the season 11-3. They usually lose their coach to a larger program after a season like that.

They're smaller than Rice?

Clemson would like to thank Les Miles for not coaching at the end of the Chick-Fil-A bowl. Seriously, three passes (two of them incomplete) when the most important thing you can accomplish is running time off the clock (or forcing Clemson to use their timeouts)?

Answering my own question, it looks like Tulsa has just over 3000 undergrads this year, while Rice is up to about 3700.

There have been some pretty good FB and BB coaches come thru Tulsa on their way to bigger and better.

I was at the Liberty Bowl yesterday. Tulsa selected this particular coach--Bill Blankenship--because he's a Tulsa grad and pretty much imbedded in the community. He was the high school coach at Tulsa Union before they hired him to coach receivers about five or six years ago. Tulsa Jinks had been winning a lot of the state titles til Blankenship reversed the trend.

They think (hope?) (pray?) that he'll be more inclined to stay.

One of my high school team mates played basketball at Tulsa. He had three coaches in four years. All three jumped to top 25 programs.

Every time I saw Bob on TV last night, his facial expression said, "But but but I'm a good recruiter."

Meanwhile, his brother's facial expressions reminded me of Cletus from Dukes of Hazzard.

And finally...

Johnny Football certainly displayed some SEC domination last night. I fear what he's going to do next year in the SEC. If he gets better, and there's no reason to believe that he won't, he could be scary good.

Not for nothing, but it surprises me a bit how much credit Manziel gets over Sumlin. Manziel is good, but he's running an offense designed by Sumlin (same as it was at U of H) that is meant to keep a defense guessing. I would imagine the SEC was not ready for wide open offense but will be in time. That being said, can't take anything away from Manziel this year. Sumlin on the other hand will need to adjust when the league adjust to his scheme soon enough I suppose. Or perhaps Sumlin is going to benefit from a bumper crop of recruits based on this year's showing, which will help for sure. One or the other will need to happen.

BCS Conference AQ Bowl Records so far for 2013 (Biggest win IMO):

ACC (6)   Clem W, Duke L, FSU W, GT W, NCS L, VT W   4-2    (GT over USC or Clemson over LSU)
SEC (9)   Ala ?,Fla L,Geor W,LSU L,Miss W,MissSt L,SCar W,Tx A&M W,Vandy W   5-3   (UGA over Neb. or Tex A&M over Okl.)
Big East (5)   Cincy W, Lou W, Pitt L, Rutgers L, Syr W   3-2   .600 (Lou. over Fla)
Pac-12 (8)   Ariz W, ASU W, Ore W, OreSt L, Stan W, UCLA L, USC L, Wash L   4-4   .500 (Oregon over K-State)
Big 12 (9)   Bay W, ISU L, KState L, OU L, OklSt W, Texas W, TCU L, TT W, WVU L   4-5   .444 (Baylor over UCLA or Texas over Oregon State)
Big Ten(7)   Mich L, MichSt W, Minn L, Neb L, N'Wstrn W, Pur L, Wis L   2-5   (Mich St over TCU or Northwestern over Miss St)

So if Bama wins Monday, the SEC will tie the ACC for best winning percentage but will have played more games.  If they lose, the SEC drops to 3rd best winning percentage.  Still want to kick Les Miles for his lack of coaching in the Clemson game.
Always ready to go to a game.

So if Bama wins Monday, the SEC will tie the ACC for best winning percentage but will have played more games.  If they lose, the SEC drops to 3rd best winning percentage.  Still want to kick Les Miles for his lack of coaching in the Clemson game.

+1 about Les Miles.

Too bad TCU's Pachall screwed up and drove drunk... he's a much better QB than Boykin. Arkansas and Houston really let the conference down.

Championship is tonight.  I personally (biased I know) think that ND is underated by much of the nation.  They are effectively an SEC style team.  Strong on defense, with enough offense to win games.  This one is a toss up, but I don't think that Bama has faced a defense like this one quite yet.

I don't think that ND has faced an O-Line like Alabama's either. To me, the keys tonight will be (1) whether Alabama's O-line can dominate the ND D-line to open up the Tide ground game, and (2) whether Everett Golsen can take advantage of the Tide's secondary and lack of consistent pass rush. If Alabama can get their ground game going, which will open up the play-action for McCarron, it could be a long night for ND. I'm not sure that Golsen can do the type of damage that Mettenburger and Murray did to Alabama. If he can, then it'll be a close game. Of course, I'll be pulling hard for the Irish tonight, but I predict that Alabama wins by at least two touchdowns.

Very biased.  I expect Bama to win but expect it to be close.  Since I have my undergrad from Auburn & my masters from Bama. I hope to be able to claim 4 straight national championships for my former schools.  Though I would prefer it if Auburn had more than Bama.

Underrated point: Will Bama's kicker miss?  ND forces LOTS of FG attempts.  Bama has been known to lose games that way.

I think Bama will win by a couple of TDs, too. Close for the first half but game gets away from ND in 3rd Qtr.

Y/G ND is nearly identical to LSU whom Alabama has faced.  I think it's the other way around.  ND hasn't faced a defense like Alabama's.  Low scoring first half.  Alabama pulls away in the second half.

Irish are competitive as hell. Don't know that they can win on that alone, unless Alabama has execution issues. Who can steal points on special teams will win it. Looking forward to it, period.

You know, if they're not going to call defensive holding when receivers are getting jammed 10 or 15 yards downfield, they might as well just take the rule out of the book. That goes for both college and the pros.

This game seems a lot like those when the SEC teams throttled Ohio State at the beginning of their dominance and exposing the pretenders.

This game proves even more that if you want a real national champion you need a playoff.

Dear Gawd, I am ready to ram a sharpened stick into my ears.........

I just about had beer fly out my nose when he said jones and mcc were having a lovers quarrel.

Letts just say the the ND based party I threw last night was ,um, low energy.  The tackling was horrid. Lacey literally threw folks off of him, which opened up the secondary.  It was a pathetic display of A defense.  I figured ND would score low 20's, but thought they could keep Ala in the 20s as well...I was wrong.

On a side note, McC's girl is not too hard on the eyes, as most ms Alabama's should be I assume.  It would have been funny if JFF showed up next to her in the stands.

Musburger fawning over McC girlfriend was the awkward moment of the night

Quote
ESPN showed Webb several more times in the first half, but none in the second half. Perhaps someone at Disney realized that a 73-year-old man's comments were being viewed by some people on Twitter as creepy. Webb's Twitter followers reportedly went from around 2,000 before the game to above 65,000 when the game ended.

Was it Dan Jenkins, Blackie Sherrod or perhaps Lewis Grizzard who said Ole Miss was where future Miss Americas go to redshirt? Appears that Auburn might be closing that gap.

What he's done though is almost unreal in today's game. 4/8 champeenships with two different schools  in which he spent two of those years in the NFL, right? I think it will be an upset if he doesn't win next year.

Yep. Best coach in college football. It sounds like Nick has finally found a happy spot where he intends to toil for awhile. When I had dinner with him years ago, he seemed anxious for the next challenge, always looking forward, which is why I think that he left LSU to go to Miami. He's a nice guy, and I wish him the happiness that he seems to have found in Tuscaloosa, just not when he plays LSU!

Honestly she's got way, way too much makeup on for my taste.  And the fake tan doesn't help at all either.

Yes.  This is right up there with the "2/10...WNB" crowd.

I'm just saying, I don't see what all the hooplah is about.  She nice fairly pretty eyes.  Other than that, she looks fake as fuck.

That's what passes for beauty these days. The girls have so much work done they all look the same. It isn't ugly, but it is generic.

Not that it affects your opinion of her, but she does suffer from vitiligo, so the makeup and spray tan at least cover the white blotches.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

She has nothing to apologize for.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Which is like comparing spring training records.

Couldn't disagree more. The statistics confirm what many of us already knew and believed: the SEC is in a class of its own.

It's a sample set that isn't easily defined.

I don't think Bowl Records prove much of anything. They're exhibitions that teams do not treat equally.

Nine BCS championships in 15 years speaks loudly to me.

It definitely speaks to where the best year-in and year-out top teams come from, but considering the fact that not one of those SEC champions lost to a non-bowl team from its conference would suggest a "have/have not" disparity exists in the SEC, would it not?

edit: I'm thinking the year the championship Miles LSU team lost to Hatfield's Hogs for its second loss that it was to a Hog team that went bowling. Please correct me if I'm off base there, Brother Happy, because I just might be. That might have been the year of the Tuberville/Chizik/Hatfield boxcars triangulation, which was a huge payday for their agent, Jimmy Sexton.

Fair enough. What about the 450 others during that period? They're all meaningful?

In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)
