Astros @ Turdinals 9/19
« on: September 19, 2012, 07:19:08 pm »
Don't have the lineups, but Altuve -- who was supposed to get the night off -- is in at 2B because Greene's knee is acting up. I'm in front of the TV, but I'm working on stuff tonight so my updates will be rather spotty. Sorry about that.

Altuve leads off against Lance Lynn with a bloop down the RF line for a hustle double.

Moore flies out to Beltran in LCF, Altuve stays at 2nd.

Wallace strikes out. At least it was low and outside, rather than high and outside. 2 down, Altuve still on 2nd.

Well hit liner by Maxwell, but Beltran barely has to move. Dammit.

Maxwell lines out to Beltran in RF, no runs scored.

I was watching MLB Tonight before the game, and Bowa and some other pinhead were on along with the host (Ravech? Can't remember.) Anyway, the Braves had someone on third and Chipper on first with one out. Somebody hit a ball to the outfield for the second out, but Chipper had apparently lost track of the number of outs, so he wasn't hustling back to first and got doubled off. However, the guy from third crossed the plate before the throw arrived at first to double off Chipper, so the run counted. But pinhead and Bowa started arguing with the host about whether the run should count, and it was apparent the *none* of these guys knew the actual rule involved (although the host was on the right side of the argument). Then they started arguing that it was a stupid rule, etc, etc. And this guy's in the running to be our next manager? Spare me.

Lowrie (hey, our lineup is so stacked that our shortstop hits #5!) leads off T2. Sadly, he flies out weakly to left.

Laird's up. Brownie says that he can play 1st or 3rd base, but that makes me think he hasn't watched him. Laird takes the count full but then strikes out. Somebody (Snyder?) flies out to left to end the second.

Craig leads off B2 with a single to left underneath a diving Lowrie. Neck-tat Molina is next. I don't understand why he inspires such loathing in me, but I can't deny it, either. He flies out to Moore on the LF warning track.

Kozma hits a pretty straightforward ball to Wallace at first, who makes a complete mess of it. That brings Lynn to the plate with a runner on first and two outs.

Jay makes some sort of out to start B3.
Beltran whiffs on good cheese for the second out.
Holliday K's on a pitch that he clearly thought was out of the zone (and may have been).

After 3, Shitbirds lead 2-0.

Astros somehow get two men on first and second with two outs, bringing Laird to the plate with an opportunity to do some damage. Opportunity wasted, he grounds into a fielder's choice 6-4.

3rdinals 2-0 after 3 1/2.

More trouble in the 4th: somebody clobbers a solo homer to LCF to make it 3-0. Right now there is a man on first with one out, and Schumaker is up.

Sorry, out of the room.

When I return they're replaying a single to RF, followed by Tony D heading to the mound to take the ball from Harrell. There are men on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs.

After seeing the replay, somebody's on serious drugs. There was a runner on 1st, and they went ahead and put the mega-shift on for Neck-tat. Wallace was holding the runner on 1st, so there was literally nobody on the right side of the infield; it was like the old days when you were playing at the park with 4 other kids. Then Harrell threw a fastball on the outside of the plate. I'll bet you'll never guess what happened.

Ambriz is on to pitch to Freese, and he strikes him out to avoid damage.

However, we're still behind 3-0 after 6.

Lowrie leads off T7 with some sort of out.
Laird bangs the ball of the CF wall for a double!
Metheny out to the mound to replace Lynn, bringing in Mojica(?).
Snyder up and hits a really hard ball into LCF, but Jay makes a good running catch. Tough break.
Paredes grounds out 4-3 to end the threat.

Still 3-0 after 6 1/2.

Ambriz still pitching.

Laird exhibits some stick-to-it to pick up a ball that he didn't field cleanly and still get the force at 1st. Unfortunately, a real third baseman would have easily made the play with so much excitement.
Swinging strikeout (and throw to 1st) by some schlub for the second out.
Chambers on to pinch-hit for Mojica. He's a Cardinal; he's out.

Cards lead 3-0 after 7. A shutout looks fairly inevitable.

Fucking Windows and fucking piece-of-shit VPN client. VPN client goes tits up and my only recourse is to reboot the entire fucking world.

Anyway. Three strikeouts (I think) in the top of the 8th, and the HPU obviously wants to get out and do some drinking, because the strike zone has gotten ridiculous.

Storey in to pitch the bottom of the 8th, and he gives up two singles so that Holliday is up with men on 1st and 3rd with no outs.

Had to step away for a bit, but boy, Harrell was pissed when he got taken out. Perhaps to the point of showing up his manager: just kind of rolled his eyes and looked in the other direction as he handed him the ball, then mouthed something like "gotta be fuckin kidding me" as he stormed off. Maybe it's all part of the "I want my pitcher to be mad he's coming out of the game" manager-hook dynamic, I dunno.

Yeah, I thought it looked like he said something, but I wasn't watching real closely so I wasn't sure. It's easy to see both sides of that one: Harrell hadn't been that bad, and he'd been victimized by some bad luck, but Tony D was in a position where he needed to stop the bleeding. Harrell probably just needs to learn that he won't always get his way, and he needs to exit gracefully.

Fick comes in to try to clean up Storey's mess.

Craig flies to RF, scoring Beltran from 3rd. Runner holds at 1st. One down.
Here comes Neck-tat, who's 2-for-3 so far with a homer. He takes a walk, so there are runners at 1st and 2nd with one out.
Freese flies out to LCF and Holliday advances to 3rd. Two outs.
Schumaker hits a liner into LCF but Maxwell makes a nice diving catch to end the inning.

Last chance coming up, trailing 4-0 after 8. Or maybe 5-0. I'm not really paying attention.

Various substituteskies for the Cardinals, which I won't bother to describe.

Wallace leads off with a sharp single to CF.
Maxwell strikes out on some pretty tough pitches.
Lowrie singles past Freese into LF. It's ruled an error. Runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.
Laird dinks a pop-up into no-man's land in LCF, and the bases are loaded with one out.

Metheny's seen enough, and he's bringing in Motte and DeScalso in a double-switch.

Snyder up against Motte, and he strikes out on a nasty slider for the second out.
Help me, Jimmy Paredes, you're my only hope! Nope, the empire prevails.

3rdinals win 5-0.
