He actually made a good pitch to pop up McCann. The command is somewhat wobbly, although he was pitching very defensively.

If this approach is going to work going through the order again, he's going to have to have a lot of help.

Well, that's a cautionary tale: Pence with the most hits (199) of anybody in Astros' history through 155 games. Altuve (175 or so) is 4th.

In transaction news today, both Kip Wells and Johnny Damon got DFA'd. Neither showed me anything this season.I think that's going to do it for Damon. He can't hit anymore. As for Wells, I wonder why he got another shot at all. He showed nothing against us, but we didn't clobber him like we should have.

Storey gets his man, keeping the game 4-1. Top 8. I'm sure that we'll see their bullpen now.

I can't believe that Hudson is still out there. This is our ninth inning, because we've got no shot against Kimbrel.

O'Flaherty on to pitch. He induces a ground ball to SS for the force. Two outs to JD.

Welcome to tonight's game Rhiner Cruz, who is greeted with a ringing two bagger on his first offering to the pinch hitter, Hinske.

I guess hanging on to him is like many of the trades lately, he's relatively cheap minor league depth with a bit of upside.

Cruz pitches around the double. 4-1 Top 9. Kimbrel on to save it. He threw 26 pitches last night, so he'll probably only be hitting 97.

Clearly the 2003 Tigers are within reach, but I'm beginning to wonder about the Mets. It seems absurd to think that they might not win 5 more games in the next two months, but every night when I look at the pitching matchup I just shake my head. Although it would be sweet to avoid ignominy by beating the Cubs in the last series of the year.

It isn't going to be easy to get to 40, and that's a hell of a thing to say. I saw somewhere recently that a team of replacement level players would be expected to win 40. I guess that's what we're looking at, a bunch of Joe Shlabotniks.

I hate to admit it... but... there is a good chance I'd've missed the recap of this evenings game but for your insistence that I read it...  Had that been the case, I would have missed out on some true artistry (no sarcometer stuff here folks, really).  It was, in fact, inspired!  Thanks for the heads-up RB, and as for NeilT... 1 word... ASSHOLE!!!

What were we in July, something like 3-25? If we repeat that performance in the next two months, then we're in the hunt to beat the 2003 Detroit Tigers.

Wonderful read. But as I predicted, no props for the rook's initial foray into the Show in there, it being a success and all.
