I'm at the "Root, Root, Root...around for someone who can play this game" stage.

Welcome back to our collective nightmare, Biz. How's the Big Apple?

Any lineup that features Moore hitting third, CJ hitting cleanup and Maxwell hitting fifth is not a big league lineup. It's downright embarrassing.

I've never even heard of Moore -where'd he come from.

New York has been great, family comes up this weekend which will be an adventure.

Moore is nothing to write home about. He was at OkC, but he's a journeyman AAAA player, just like 90% of our roster right now.

Well, shit. Gonzales hit to 1st, recovered and tagged, then thrown to 2nd for the DP.

Next hit, towards 1st, bag tagged for out 3.

No, that one is on 'Coney Island Baby.'

I listened to 'Berlin' when it came out. I think I was 13. I can't imagine my kids absorbing that at 13, it's kinda scary. My parents had no clue, no clue at all.

I wonder, if I'm around to find out years down the road, whether these last weeks will be considered the lowest of the lows for the Astros.  Maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but fuck, they are beyond awful.

Mid 60s were pretty tough to take, but some of that was trading away good young players in a futile search for Godzilla.

And FeRod pitches well again when the game is lost. Just don't let him pitch in a game that's on the line.

Downsie should have been pinch-hitting for Schreefer earlier with a runner in scoring position. Base running blunders and a managerial brain fart cost us that game.

Berlin is a difficult listen for me much like I find it hard to watch Taxi Driver all the way through.

Hardest part for me is the end of The Kids. Other than that I am amazed and saddened and stunned and all the other responses that everyone else has when they listen to it.

I missed Taxi Driver when it came out. I ended up watching it on the back half of a double bill with Road Warrior when I was going through a divorce and had my tiny little heart broken in pieces. After the flicks, I went to a gun store with a friend of mine and looked at pistols. Had a small episode where I was clicking the empty gun over and over and over and over into the mirror behind the counter, imagining using it. My friend wisely helped me to leave.

Not me.  Nothing is worse than watching a 35-win team day in and day out.  And the team, as it stands right now, is worse than 35-wins.  If this was the team the Astros started with in April, they'd be hard pressed to win 20 games.  This is without a doubt, the worst Major League team I've ever seen in my lifetime, and it's probably the worst team in history.  I don't care what kind of asshole the owner is, that's painful.

Completely agree.  There is bad, and there is "we don't give a shit what we put out there" bad.

While there is no disputing how dismal the brand of baseball the Astros are playing these days, I will dispute your characterization of the organization as "we don't give a shit what we put out there" bad.  For the first time in several years, the direction of the team seems contrary to that philosophy.  The new management does give a shit, and, to show they give a shit, they are making drastic changes to the organization.  They are willing to eat salary to infuse younger talent into the organization, and they seem seriously committed to the stated philosophy of rebuilding through drafting and developing talent internally until the right moment to add free agent acquisitions.

Drayton's brand of baseball for the last several years was the kind that was truly disrespectful to discerning baseball fans: spend just enough to not dreadfully suck and hope no one notices and that the masses keep coming to the ball park while the org pretends to add important "veteran pieces" such as Feliz, Matsui, etc. and holds on to diminishing contributors that will never be a part of a contending astros team and whose trade value continue to decline.

If Crane and Co, burn this traveling horseshit show to the ground and never rebuild it in order to bag cash from a television contract and revenue sharing, I'll rent a torch and a pitchfork.  Until that time, let's drink heavily to get through these games and have some patience and see the direction the club is heading.

I guess in some sense, there is a distinction in the willingness to eat salary, but I see that as marginal.  In a broad sense, there is little distinction between the last two years of Drayton and this year, as all of them are characterized by trading off major leaguers for prospects.

I think where I differ from some around here is how I characterize the recent trades.  I don't see them as swinging high, getting high-ceiling prospects who you might later build around, but instead targeting prospects that are most likely minor league filler or replacement level major leaguers.  I realize that might be all the Astros' talent was worth, but even with that understanding, I don't buy into trading major league talent for minor league filler.  It is every bit as disrespectful to the fans, IMO, as what you describe about Drayton's signing of Matsui, Feliz, etc.

However, I realize I have no idea how good the acquired talent is and am hopefully dead wrong on my assessment that it is most likely filler.

I can't say that you're wrong in your assessment, as I agree with most of it. However, when you look at where the new guys are slotting in to the current farm talent pool, it seems to me that filling the place with guys who have a shot at the show is the first place to go. Drayton and Wade left the system so decimated that the farm system was as bad as the parent club, which is unacceptable. I'm with the new regime for now. I have to have faith that they know what they're doing.

With the exception of Cosart and Singleton (two of our top 4 legitimate prospects), I'd agree with this.  But baseball people smarter than myself continue to argue that farm system depth plays a big part in consistent winning.  If you breed a winning attitude in the minors, that might carry over to the bigs.

I'm also of the opinion that at least one of the 13 prospects the Astros just added will be a pleasant surprise.  Don't ask me who that'll be, though.  I'm choosing to adopt a glass half full attitude here because I don't want to have yet another reason to stop watching baseball altogether.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

Is the major league club being unattended to right now, yes without a doubt in my mind.  But I think that is just the plan for the last 3 weeks of July.  They are showcasing all their non-future of the franchise talent and are trading any piece that will move.  I believe that the first week of August will start the building part of the major league club.   Guys like Wallace, Barnes, F-Mart and others will be brought up then to evaluate whether or not they can play with the big boys and guys like Downs, Bogie, Schafer, etc will be riding the pine or DFA'd.  In the offseason, I think they will find a free agent or two to fill in any gaping holes.  Next year will be all about building (and a lot more fun)

I'd love to see what you envision happen, and, in fact, Luhnow said that changes were coming at the end of July. In my opinion, Bogusevic, Bixler, Downs and Schreefer should  either be DFA'd (my preference for all except Downs) or consigned to the bench or minor leagues. I don't know what to do about Scott Moore. He's shown some pop from the left side and can play several positions. I guess that he's shown enough to me to keep him for now.

I agree with this.  This year is about dismantling and restocking.

I don't think next year is going to be much more fun. There are a couple of prospects who might reach the majors at some point, but for the most part the major league roster won't be much improved. Watching the Rangers kick the shit out of this team on a regular basis is going to suck some serious ass. I'm not trying to go all doom and gloom on everyone, as I think we have the makings of a genuinely good farm system at this point, but I don't think we'll see much benefit from that for another several years.
