Does Sam Adams (or even Spoetzl) count as "craft" beer?

There's a much stronger argument around Shiner than Sam Adams, IMO.

I love the fact that Yankee Stadium offers two craft selections: Brooklyn and Sam Adams. For a team that passionately hates Boston, they still sell their macrocraft beer.

Agreed.  Although Shiner is pretty much nationwide now, hence the bracketing with Sam Adams.

The difference between Citi and Yankee is interesting.  Then again, hipsters tend to prefer the Mets.

Also, Citizen's Bank is a surprise.  I thought they only drank riot juice there.

Geez... I live in the epicenter of the craft brewery universe, but I can't get Shiner.  Nor can my other buds up here from Texas.  So I've got two cases of Shiner coming to me (I was unaware of Shiner Black, sorry Mark), straight from the brewery, and my Texas buds up here and I are gonna have us a good ole' Texas cookout - FEATURING SHINER!!!  Personally, I would think it un-Texan of me not to be excited about this...

Now, if you really want to judge me, I'd use as 'Exhibit A' the fact that I live in the middle of the craft-brew universe here in PDX, but my 'beer' of choice is in fact Coors Light...

A "craft" brewery is defined as producing less than 6MM bbls per year.  Sam Adams produces less than half of that. So, despite the fact that you can get it everywhere, and it tastes like shit, Sam Adams is certainly defined as "craft".

Karbach's getting picked up by Silver Eagle, which means we could see them at MMPUS or Reliant as soon as next year.

I still think that St. Arnold's whole portfolio is better than Karbach's, but the more the merrier at the ballpark.

Don't know the accuracy of this, but on my visit to Stone the other day our driver said that Sam Adams lobbied to move the threshold up to 6M so that they could maintain their status as a craft brewery.

This article doesn't imply that directly, but it doesn't seem like some tinfoil conspiracy either.

That is correct, at least the part about the change in definition of "craft brewery".  The threshold used to be 2MM bbls per year, and it was bumped to 6 MM in 2011.  Sam Adams certainly benefitted from that, but it wasn't just Sam Adams that lobbied for the change.  The reason they wanted to maintain the status is because of the excise taxes imposed on larger brewers.  Craft brewers also argued that bumping up the threshold was necessary to reflect their place in terms of overall marketshare.

Center of the craft-brewing universe? Conduct your glance east to the mountains, sir. I work for a brewery in Asheville, where Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and Oskar Blues will all be opening up shop in coming years.

It's about quality, not quantity.  Shiner is and will remain the center of the craft-brew universe regardless of how many entries a given location may have.

It's about quality, not quantity.  Shiner is and will remain the center of the craft-brew universe regardless of how many entries a given location may have.

I may be forced to call in a hit on you with that attitude.

Yep.

If I had 5 months snowed-into my cabin, I bet I would brew some righteous shit too.

How many of the Big Sky Brewing Co. beers have yall tried?  Moose Drool was solid, the Cowboy Porter and Slow Elk I liked.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Center of the craft-brewing universe? Conduct your glance east to the mountains, sir. I work for a brewery in Asheville, where Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and Oskar Blues will all be opening up shop in coming years.

I guess Asheville is in the mix with PDX after all... LINK'
