CJ has been scratched, so the new lineup is this:

Well, shit, where will the errors come from?
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed

Left lat strain for CJ. That could be a DL trip.

Ouch. That hurts. I don't see any way around it, especially with one player already day-to-day.

They're discussing Carlos' decision in the extended pregame. JD sympathizes with the difficulty of the decision, and they're wondering if Carlos expects to retire at the end of the season or not and how that might play into his choice as well.

Lee needed just a little more time to think about the trade thing.

Given the amount of time that is passing on this proposed trade, I strongly suspect that Lee is negotiating for a better and more lucrative exit. He knows that he has two teams over a barrel. If he goes, he's going to be getting something extra. That's my hunch, with nothing to base it on except the time running. I think that he'll make the decision after today's ballgame.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if he hangs 'em up after the season. Lee strikes me as someone who will easily adjust to life after baseball, because he already has a great foundation for one in his ranches. It's the player who has nothing firm to do but clip coupons and play golf (Jeff Bagwell, I'm looking at you) who has difficulty adjusting.

Levine and JD say Wandy is being scouted pretty heavily.

It's surprising how listenable DoRay is when in the middle of a discussion with JD and Levine. He's clearly the goober in the bunch, but I don't know how much of it is the different role for him, or how great JD and good Levine are.

Give it a minute, get both sides of DoRay chiming in together, and it's clearly the sparkle of JD and Levine making this listenable.

I enjoyed listening to JD and (I think it was) Dave's Excellent Adventure in the offseason a few years back. I have to think he'd be better if paired with a good color guy.

Phils allegedly gauging interest in hamels, which could affect market for Wandy.

Dave was tolerable, but when you add Dolan it becomes this chipmunky assault on your ears and brain instantly. I listened to the WGN radio feed yesterday and it's so much more enjoyable to hear deeper, more relaxed voices instead of the hyper squeaking of DoRay as they work so hard to kill any moments of dead air. And that's before you start to assess the content of what they're killing that dead air with.

I've doomed Castro by picking him up and starting him today since Rosario isn't in the lineup and Lucroy is still on the DL.

Why would you start him on the road against a Cy Young perfect-game pitcher?

DOOOOOOMED.

That was selfish.  I started this period of improvement by dropping him after starting him in an effort of naive hope for the first month or so of the season

Then all is right with the world. Good show.

Not sure what is on the menu for today, but yesterday I had - from out of nowhere - a wicked craving for beenie-weenies.   Had to have it. Thank God we had some Bush's beans and bun length OM angus dogs laying around. And onions, and ham.

Even though he's only hitting .176 against lefties (coming in), he was in the lineup and Rosario wasn't.

Yeah, I've had to scramble a little bit because of an injury and I think I've got the same kind of situation going on tonight, except the guy I'm forced to plug in probably won't play at all. Ennh. My fault for poor planning, I suppose.

I guess this means we should be streaming every pitcher who faces the Astros. Why did it take this long to occur to me?

Tell her the Slade song titles were some of the earliest precursors to textEnglish.

(Right now I have the 19-year-old listening to "Main Man" - off of T. Rex The Slider. The other has on something or another. But he had on The Black Angels really fucking loud a little while ago, so that was all right.)

A) the Hispanic-heritage folks who don't know a damn bit of Spanish

B) the English-speaking folks who are watching the spot and wondering, "What the hell?"

C) the client's BRILLIANT observation that both languages need to be tied together to make it better.

All it's missing is a bigger logo.

It's a story about an aging guy in recovery who hadn't spoken to his daughter in ten+ years because of the shambles his addictions left his life in back in New Orleans.  He's been asked to walk her down the aisle at her wedding as reconciliation but the pesky transportation infrastructure threatens to get in the way.

Castro has been improving steadily each month in that department.  Also, I think he's been improving (if not quite at such an impressive clip) behind the plate as well.

It certainly can't make things worse.

Lee has 5 HRs and a .400 SLG in half a season in MMPUS, basically a neutral park. Isn't Dodger Stadium a pitcher's park? How is Lee supposed to help them? Do the Dodgers know something we don't?

June Astro batting averages, courtesy of Tags:

 Altuve (.291), Bogusevic (.216), Castro (.302), Downs (.229), Johnson (.258), Lee (.241), Lowrie (.218), Martinez (.232), Schafer (.176), Snyder (.179)

Some ugly numbers there, fitting for a 10-17 month.

Castro has been improving steadily each month in that department.  Also, I think he's been improving (if not quite at such an impressive clip) behind the plate as well.

I agree on both scores, but his work behind the dish still has a ways to go when it comes to blocking balls in the dirt.

Nice play by Bogey. Bixler was struggling with that one and Bogey picked him up. I wish he hit better because I like his defense alot.

Wow. I didn't realize how far he'd fallen. Never a power hitter, especially for a 1B, but ... .236/.303/.323?

I can buy that he is in decline - I don't watch closely enough to know otherwise - but he is still only 28, and was fine offensively as recently as last season. Is Carlos a better bet?

The Dodgers are desperate for help, especially with Ethier now hurt. They probably can't dfo any better than Carlos, probably courtesy of the new wildcard arrangement.

Altuve takes an unhittable pitch for strike three. One out to Lowrie.

The Astros home attendance so far is 928, 797, 16th out of 16 in the NL.

If they were in the AL, they would immediately jump to 9th out of 15.

CWS - 900,736 (09th of 14)
 KC - 871,677 (10th of 14)
SEA - 812,409 (11th of 14)
OAK - 796,720 (12th of 14)
 TB - 786,958 (13th of 14)
CLE - 699,516 (14th of 14)

I wonder if Carlos had a moment like ol Billy chapel at the end of For The Love of the Game.  He writes a plaintive note on a baseball, looks over at the bat boy and calls out "hombre, ven aqui." He hands the ball to the boy, who looks him in the eye and nods understandingly.  The boy takes off running and doesn't stop until he reaches luhnow and hands luhnow the ball, still gasping for air.  luhnow looks down and reads carlos's note inscribed on the ball: "tell 'em I accept.  For the love of the dodger dog.  -Los"

If I were the Astros, I would go ahead and call up Wallace. Put him at 1B tomorrow. Let Lee mull over his options. Not to send a message to Lee but it's time to move on and see what you have in Wallace.

I honestly don't understand why he would want to stay.  It's 3 months of playing baseball every day, mostly in different cities around the country.  Instead of playing half your games in Houston, Texas, you will play in fucking Southern California for a team that has a chance to make the playoffs.  Does he have kids?  What is keeping him here?  I'm sure his foreman can take care of the ranch.

Not that I would expect this of him, but he could also do it because it's the best thing for the Astros.  The same team that gave him $100M and let him do whatever the fuck he wanted over the last 7 years.  It's just 3 months.  Leave.

edit: Buster just tweeted that he's hearing the deal won't happen.  Fuck Carlos.

Olney's sources are usually pretty good. He's got to be holding out for something in particular. It'll be interesting and telling to see what the club does for him.

Some actual (non-)information from McTaggart: Carlos Lee left the ballpark with the team and headed for Pittsburgh, saying simply there was no decision yet.

Yep. He's either angling for something that the club either can't or won't produce or he doesn't care about rotting on the pine for the remainder of the season, because I don't see any way that the club will keep playing him if he said a definite no.

Carlos is a lame duck on a going-nowhere team and whoever he's traded for could really help the Good Guys in a few years. That said, I don't mind it that he doesn't want to leave Houston and I won't be supremely pissed if he stays through the end of the year. For all of the shitty things written about this team and its city recently, it's kinda nice to see somebody actually prefer to be here.

Yeah, I don't really understand the vitriol about Carlos doing what he contractually negotiated for and is entitled to do.  I can think of a bunch of reasons that he might not want to go, including having to live out of a hotel for the rest of the season (assuming he doesn't want to bother renting/buying a house and having to figure out all the details that includes) to not wanting to have to join a team full of people he doesn't know and beyond.  It's a big change and if doesn't want to do it and doesn't have to do it, who are we to excoriate the guy for doing what he wants to do with his life?

Maybe if he performed anywhere near the contract he has, I'd be sympathetic.  I'm not going to rag on the guy, but I'm not backing him either.

Carlos negotiated a contract in which he had the right to veto trades to 14 different teams, and LAD was one of those teams.  Fine, it was his right to do so.  However, the Astros have the right to trade him to 15 other teams and I'd as soon them do so immediately...

I don't dislike Carlos, and like pots I am "not going to rag on the guy, but I'm not backing him either" and am more than ready to see 'the horse' move on to other pastures...

Right, for me, it's kinda like, if he had gone, I would have remembered him fondly.

Fuck him.  I know it's in his contract, but fuck him.  As much of an Astros staple as he has been, he's not even on the same planet as Biggio/Bagwell.  I'd rather have another Oswalt who requests to be traded to a contender than another Carlos who just collects a paycheck.

This next few weeks may test just how much he cares about the fans and their response in Houston. The crowds are so small it might not matter much, or he might just get booed on a Beltranian level.

I wonder what or who released the information about the possible deal if Luhnow's policy is to not discuss pending trades. I think that it was Carlos, who apparently didn't think through the PR ramifications of declining the deal. If that is the case, then he deserves whatever reaction he gets and an't blame the club for trading him to a team that he didn't put the kibosh on.

I just find it surprising that the Dodgers would be on the list of teams he would have to ok.

I don't know if Lee or Lee's people released the info but he certainly commented on it and Luhnow was careful to say that he wouldn't comment on it, that whatever they got from Lee was whatever they got but he wouldn't add to it.

I'd be surprised if Lee has any real feeling for fan reaction at all. He's not involved much in promotion and has been a magnet for fan bitching for years, although none of it has been all that loud. This might change things a bit.

LAD makes perfect sense if he really wants to stay in HOU as bad as it seems he does.  If that was in fact his goal at the beginning of the season, his best bet would've been to pick the 14 teams he thought stood the best chance of making a playoff run (i.e., the only ones likely to try to make a deadline deal)...

ETA, and omit the teams with the best 1B and IB prospect(s) from that list.

That assumes a lot, like he cares about winning. I strongly suspect that he doesn't. So, OSF, what are the clubs who are in need of a first sacker/DH who are in contention? I haven't the foggiest.

But you have to wonder if the Astros somehow allowed the information to be leaked, as in a plant to a friend in the press, to put pressure on Carlos to take the deal. I wouldn't put it past them, but I'm too lazy to investigate the time line and original source on the disclosure of the potential trade.

Sorry, wasn't clear I guess.  If he wanted to stay in HOU, his best bet would be to include the 14 teams on his no-trade list that stood the best chance of making a playoff run (as teams making a playoff push are more likely to try to make a trade for someone like Carlos than a team not making a playoff run).  In other words, if he wanted to stay in HOU, his best bet would be to exclude the (presumed) 15 worst teams in the league from his 'no trade' list, as they'd be the least likely to seek a trade for him...

I wonder if there's really any team that he'd want to pay for at this point in his career. I'm starting to think that he's hanging it up after the end of the season. Otherwise, why turn down a chance to upgrade your playoff position. I fear that the Astros' response to this is going to be swift and unpleasant to Carlos.

I doubt it.

IMO, Luhnow will still seek to get the best deal he can (and thus it may be close to the trade deadline before Carlos gets dealt).  That said, I also think it is a question of 'when', not 'if', Carlos will be traded (and if at the deadline Luhnow's only option is to send Carlos to CLE, FTC, MIN, etc., he'll do it without reservation...).

I can't say that I disagree with this. We just as soon find out now whether Wallace can be the answer for next season. If he isn't, then that will give the club something to do in the off-season.

That's interesting. My wife's Tribe could well be it. Of course, if given the choice between playing in Cleveland, which is sinking like a rock in the standings, and playing in LA, which is going through its own difficulties scoring runs of late, it strikes me as six one way and half a dozen the other. I see the Snakes and the Giants as the major players in the NL West, particularly if Kemp and Ethier are out for any extended period of additional time. Abreu has been sinking like a stone lately and is probably playing too often at age 38 to be very effective.

I can't imagine that Carlos Lee is in the practice of leaking information to the media.  It seems like the furthest thing from his mind.

Agreed.  I don't see why his agent would either.

Hopefully, the leak was on the other side as it would be stupid for Luhnow to leak it and then have it collapse in public view.
