It's been discussed on these boards for a couple of years now, but the movie Pelotero is scheduled for limited release, iTunes, and On Demand viewing for July 13, 2012.  As you may recall, the movie profiles kids in the Dominican pre-signing, signing, and initial foray into pro ball.  Though they were initially following 8 players, the movie ultimately focuses on 2: Miguel Sano (Twins $3.15M signee - record non-Cuban signing at the time), and Juan Carlos Batista (Astros $200K signee).  The character synopsis of Jean Carlos Batista is as follows:

Jean Carlos Batista, 16, is a young shortstop who left home at age 13 to practice with a renowned baseball train Astin Jacobo in the wake of his father's death.  Three years later, Astin calls Jean Carlos his adopted son, and has turned him into one of the island's elite prospects.  Together, they navigate the business side of the Dominican baseball system in search of the highest signing bonus.  But as offers arrive, Jean Carlos' overconfidence and the revelation of a secret kept from him by his parents may endanger his promising career, as well as jeopardize his relationship with the man he considers his father.

I'm presuming the 'revelation' is age related - IIRC he is 19, but I guess I'll have to wait and see...

He was signed in May 2010 as a 17 year old.  He was didn't play the 2010 season.  His date of birth on his MILB page is 11/15/91 making him 20.  Aging three years in just two.  Time sure flies in the DR. 

BTW he is ripping line drives all over the place.  He also played a game at 1B which was a bit odd. I look forward to watching him again tonight.

There is certainly something weird about his age, but I'm pretty sure that he never faced any 'penalty' for falsifying documents (and his name never changed).  I'm very curious to learn what the 'revelation' is...

I am assuming the 2010 lost season was the penalty.  I also wonder if the Astros got some of their offered money back as well.

IIRC, the signing was initially reported almost 6 months in advance of when it became 'official', and the Astros ended up paying him a $200K signing bonus. Nevertheless, while Badler noted 'paperwork issues' (IIRC), I don't recall a mention of him actually trying to falsify documents.  I guess we'll find out soon enough though...

Just another tidbit to add to the information picture:  According to the Astros Media Guide, he was signed on 11/15/10 (his 19th birthday).  Six months after his signing was first released pended MLB approval. So that explains why he never played in 2010.  It is also interesting that it was on his birthday.

comment about Batista and age issue at 8:50 into the podcast.  Age was wrong and caused the signing bonus to decrease.

Pelotero is at Houston's Sundance through Thursday.  We went and saw it last night, and it's well worth seeing.  The level of paranoia about Dominican Aging Syndrome is pretty fascinating, and Bautista's story is as well.  Apparently he was 10 for 700 days.

Excellent, I will check it out on Hulu.

I got to see Miguel Sano a bunch last year in the MWL. He was a great hitter (led the league in HR by 9) but a bit of a butcher in the field. I'm hoping we get to see some of Jean Carlos Batista in QC next year.

I was scrolling around on my Roku last night and found this. I was totally captivated.

What the league did to Sanó seemed an awful lot like collusion.

Sano's story proved the system is corrupt and Batista's story proved they players are corrupt.  There weren't any good guys, just victims.

It's on Netflix instant, too. I'm saving that and the Knuckleball movie for the next time I'm home alone, although I dunno, my wife does like documentaries.
