Probably career-ending, sounds like (given that he planned to retire after this year). Apparently he always shags flies during BP. Sad, he seems like a class act.

That's actually a pretty common pastime of pitchers. It's a shame. The last No. 42 is a class act and perhaps the finest relief pitcher of all time.

Agreed.  The most number of post season saves by a long shot with 42.  2nd is Lights Out Lidge with 18.

One of the few Yanks I respected AND liked.  Dude went out there and every batter knew what pitch he was going to throw: cutter...they still couldn't hit it.  He wasn't obnoxious and just did his job.

Eliminate the "perhaps".  It's like saying that Babe was "perhaps" the best home run hitter of his era.

Mariano pitched 141 post-season innings and had an ERA under 1.  Think about that.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I was just going to type this. Glad I scrolled down.

Rob Neyer makes the reasonable point that his career might not be over, even if he says it is.

I had no idea Lidge had that many and it puts him second. Interesting. Do you happen to have the # that he had in a Houston uni?

Okay, then. I'm just always reticent about calling someone the "greatest of all time." However, Mariano Rivera has posted the numbers for such a case.

Don't look at the numbers, dammit, look with your eyes!

That pitch is what makes Mariano a one trick pony and proof that he was never a great pitcher.

Yep. And they didn't think that Mariano could replace John Wetteland! Speaking of one pitch ponies, that worked out pretty well for a guy named Trevor Hoffman too.
