It's the truth. I've noticed that people who haven't heard him before tend to misunderstand his style. But they always come around.
He has an understated cleverness that is brilliant at times. He's like being with a good friend who doesn't scream to get attention, doesn't swear, doesn't really deadpan either. He just says something that stops you dead on your tracks and makes you either think, laugh, or both. Not subtle, but not in your face either. Just plain conversational, funny, and friendly.
When he poked fun at his Dad the one spring training game for asking Patti Smith for a kiss on-air, you knew the guy was brilliant but not over the top. Being over the top is a trait that is practiced almost every day on ESPN by their personality of the day. Jimmy D is the Oasis from that sort of broadcaster that everyone should covet to run to when you just need a break from it all.
