D&Q Mini Mart and Open Container Laws
« on: February 03, 2012, 01:50:25 pm »
gleach clued me in to the D&Q on Richmond.  I was planning a shopping trip down there tonight, but I have a question:  what's the treatment of growlers as far as open container laws are concerned?

Can I carry them in the car, or do they have to go in the trunk?

Thanks.

We sometimes order a bottle of wine at a restaurant and don't finish it off (and I think it's the not finishing it off part that is modified by the sometimes . . . )  Anyway, my understanding is that the open container should be sealed in some manner--stick a cork in it--and placed out of arms reach.  We usually put it in the back seat.

We usually throw it in the trunk.

My daughter took me to this place--she was a big fan.  Isn't there a place between Ella and N Shepherd that has growlers?

You'd probably have to go up to the Skylane Apartments on W. Alabama to get a growler.

Technically it should be the trunk.  That being said, if you have the growler in a bag and it's full I doubt ou would get much flak.  Just like bringing home beer from the liquor store.   If you have an SUV the cargo area is fine obviously.

I actually looked this up once, and the rule is in the trunk or a locked console/glove compartment.  But, really, you're just going down Richmond.  It'll be fine on your lap.

Kinda what I was hoping.  I don't want it rolling around in the trunk, so I'll put it on the back seat.  Thanks all.

So what do they have to fill the growlers with?

I've been to that place plenty of times, and never really bothered to look at the beer section.  Lesson, learned.

I have yet to go, but gleach (in a sentiment echoed by many online) says it's the best beer selection in Houston...better than Specs.  They allow you to create your own 6-packs, and have random kegs from which to fill the aforementioned growlers.  He and I shared a couple of different ales whose names I forgot (along with my own for a while).  I think the weaker of the two was 11%.

We usually pass it back and forth and slug down the last of it on the drive home.

I think you're thinking of Petrol Station. They fill growlers.

The beers that Limey and I consumed (in gallon quantities) were 512 Pecan Porter and 512 Cream Stout. Both good. I prefer the pecan.

I really like the 512 ine up of beers.  My favorite is the IPA.  I've been drinking the Thirsty Planet Bucket head lately.  Relly nice.

Petrol was the very place.  I was also told that the new Whole Foods on Waugh fills growlers.

This is correct. They also sell empty growlers cheap. Plus, you can drink and grocery shop (or let the wife grocery shop while you have a drink). I had to go buy growlers there to get them filled at D&Q. I paid about $7 for two empty gallon sized growlers.

The one in Sugar Land does too.  Usually a couple on tap and they change them out frequently.
