Hard drive prices, holy shit
« on: November 22, 2011, 04:16:32 pm »
So I was going build my mom a nice new pc (she's still running windows xp, on a 40gb hdd), and I noticed that the 1tb samsung hard drive I usually use to build with has gone from $60 to $150 in a matter of weeks.  Did some googling, turns out it's because of the flooding in Thailand.  Insane!  Any econo-techies out there know when this madness is going to subside?

eta: I might add that my mom has managed to squeeze 18,000 photos onto her current tiny hard drive. Impressive.

At least. If they just lost inventory, 6 to 12 months. If the plants are damaged badly, 12 to 18+

Not only the WD and Seagate factories were damaged but so were many of the component supplier's factories.  It's going to be awhile.

dang, we bought a new pc at the right time.  About a month ago got an Intel Core I7, 16GB RAM, 2Tb HD for under 700. Bet that price isn't good any more!

NAND is going down.  SSDs are going to take off.

And right on cue, I had a hard drive crap out this morning.  $95 for a 160GB drive just plain sucks.

I realize some high-end entertainment-philes demand the speeds of SSDs but I have yet to find any practical justification for me or my wife, who surf the web and handle home finances on the PC.

At work (in my secret life as a System Administrator), SSDs are changing the storage game in amazing ways.  The technology to enhance the efficiency of leveraging multiple storage tiers in a single environment is awesome.

My Samsung 256GB SSD cost a little over $400.  The average consumer won't be willing to pay that anytime soon.

Wow.  The total cost of the little MacBook Air i just got at work was $1,400 and it has a 256gb SSD.  35% of the cost is the drive?
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

Who knew that we would ever experience a hard drive shortage?  Time to stockpile boxes of Tony Chachere's Creole Jambalaya Mix, set our transistor radios to 88.7 KUHF, and hunker down.

Fear not - since Apple didn't pay $400 for the SSD to begin with, Apple markup would account for more of the price than any other single component in your computer, but that SSD would be a close second.  This link from 2010 shows Air profit margins estimated anywhere from 28%-37% depending on the configuration.

Not sure if that's supposed to make you feel better or worse, but there you have it.
