we're gunna have a t.v. party tonight....all right
« on: November 02, 2011, 02:49:23 am »
no. not that kind of tv party, with plus-sized heels and twice-shaven necks.

i'm talking about the Telley, and some shows that I think are worth mentioning that can help a step or two during the long march across the void.

Walking Dead--supergreat if you're into horror/people in extreme circumstances kind of entertainment. Also if your geek arrow points true north there is an ongoing series of...ahem...graphic novels available (with a totally different plot line so don't worry about spoilers) if the word comic book is as anathema to you as the word zombie. Creepily, this show has a similar emotional tone as being an astros fan in late 2011 waiting for the rough love child of mclanecraneselig to be born.

Raising Hope
--funniest, sweetest, kindest show whose title character's mother is an executed serial killer. Stars Garrett Dillahunt who played two murderous characters brilliantly in Deadwood, Martha Plimpton (of the Carradine clan), and Cloris Leachman (cue horse whinny's mix of fear/lust) do not disappoint. Disturbing enough that I'll watch it, charming enough that the wife isn't pissed that I let the kids see it.

Luther--Remember that awesome actor who played Stringer Bell in the Wire? We'll the dude is British and is playing the best disturbed emotionally intense detective ever. normally i hate most things that come out of the BBC (young ones, python excepted) but this is awesome. forgive the brits for that nasty stamp act business and royal marriages and watch this show.

Always sunny in Philadelphia
-- kinda like seinfeld/cheers mashup but without the judeo/catholic morality of ny/boston. pure amoral degeneracy served up hot with peppers and onions slathered with whiz philly style. Would love to watch an episode with pence and oswalt to find out if this matches up with their philly experience.

Sons of Anarchy--the hamletyness of the show makes it uneven but some stand alone episodes and moments are very fun. stephen king's appearance in one of the episodes is fantastic. Henry Rollins is good too as a regular character in the second season. the character Tig alone is worth the price of admission.

any other shows that you (both as individuals and as a group) recommend now that  the dual voids of baseball and project runway are here? (Mondo was robbed!!!!)

Parks and Recreation - I'll always love ensemble comedy.  And every character here works with every other.  Once you get past the first few episodes of the first season, what you're watching is simply a live action Simpsons.  The town of Pawnee is Springfield.  And Ron Swanson is the greatest comedy character created in the last five years.

Actually, that and Community are about all that we're watching right now. Recently quit The Good Wife and Person of Interest because they were too paint by numbers.  CBS procedurals suck.

If you're in a mood to catch up on stuff on Netflix/Hulu/highly illegal downloading:

Sherlock (BBC)
Archer

Tues:  Suns of Anarchy - Hamlet with outlaw bikers.  The characters are very well formed despite the occasionally deus ex machina plotiness of the show.

Wed:  Modern Family - It just always makes me happy.

Thurs:  Parks & Rec, Community, It's Always Sunny, and The League.  The first three have been well described above.  The League is surprisingly funny, and usually gets at least one audible belly laugh from me every episode.

M-Th: The Daily Show.

If you haven't already gotten into Mad Men and Breaking Bad (a) you should and (b) they are both streaming on Netflix now.
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

its my favorite active show--won't write about it out of concern for spoilers but I think its one of the best written best directed and best acted shows ever (deadwood and wire are atf's). Cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Luck on HBO too.

Thanks, I'll give PR another try--I did see the first two episodes a while back and didn't like it. Thought it was trying to be the public sector office. Caught one episode of community from the current season and got the impression it would have been funnier if I had seen the earlier seasons.

I'm back in school, so have limited tv time now.  Community and Boardwalk Empire are my only must-sees.  DirecTV has started The Wire again, so I'll watch that and The Daily Show while working out.

Top Chef Texas starts tonight.

I watch Modern Family, Top Gear and Boardwalk Empire regularly. Boardwalk is the show I clear the decks for, the same way I watched The Shield. When it's on, I'm unavailable.

We just got the Cooking Channel and they run old episodes of the French Chef and they're very enjoyable to watch. Spilling shit, dropping things, banging pots and pans, forgetting what she's talking about and flubbing lines - Julia Child didn't care, she was trying to show that you could cook something that sounded like it was high-class food and you didn't need designer cookware and a bunch of gadgets and formal training. I love it, it's like watching someone change part of the world in slow motion.

The writers re-booted Parks and Rec after the first season.  It's absolutely terrific.

I've never been able to get into Modern Family.  The situations seem to forced, the characters just seem like broad types colliding with one another.  I understand that that's largely the point, and it's certainly damned funny when it's funny, but when it's not (or worse, when it's trying to be sincere) it's terrible.

There's a lot of forced jokes and the characters are certainly more stereotyped then developed, but, somehow, I always feel happy after watching it.  There's good in that.

I had a boss in high school, a very successful stockbroker/financial planner, who's favorite show on TV was Alf.  He said it was a wonderful no-brainer after a day at work.

Of course, his favorite meal was Spam casserole, so his judgement was not always spot on.

Have been DVRing Homeland, but not got around to watching it yet.  Ditto Bored to Death - which I have enjoyed in the past.

Stoked about Top CHef returning - thanks for the heads up RB.

The g/f has me hooked on Revenge.  A soaped-up thriller admitteldy, but still entertaining.

+1 on Modern Family.  It's contrived, but it cracks me up.

Breaking Bad: Don't think anything out there can top it.

Boardwalk Empire: enjoy watching it.  Still not convinced that casting a great character actor like Buscemi as the lead was a good idea but still compelling.

Archer and Robot Chicken: good stuff.

Modern Family: agree that it comes off as forced.  I make sure I'm stationed somewhere out of my wife's sight line whenever Sophia Vegara appears on screen.

Bio channel: great productions about the making of some well known movies.

Military Channel: tanks and shit.

Personally, I've never been smart or cool enough to be able to watch Parks and Recreation, etc... but...

Walking Dead--supergreat if you're into horror/people in extreme circumstances kind of entertainment....

Absolutely fantastic.  The only show that I actually look forward to watching at air time every week.  Last weeks show was, well, shocking. Did not see that coming... Kinda weirded me out in a 'holy shit did that just happen' kind of way...

Another excellent show.  Thought I'd watch it as 'filler' after Dexter, but its actually moved ahead of Dexter (thusfar anyway).  Dexter, as always, is worth a watch as well.

Guilty Pleasure:
Sing Off (I was a Choir Badass in HS, unlike all you Band Geeks)

I'm supposed to feel guilty? Love the show.
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

Burn Notice started up again tonight.  Definitely worth putting on the 'to watch' list!
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

it's in re-runs but Wilfred is hilarious. I think it comes on FX Friday nights. Person of Intrest and Grimm.
It's all part of the game.....

I'm mostly a Hulu/netflix type person. I never know when I will be able to watch something, and I don't have one of those fancy TV recorder doohickies.

Sing Off. Can't get enough.
Just finished Wire in the Blood (all I could find)
I wait until the Dexter DVDs come out and schedule a weekend to do nothing but watch. (Yes, I know I could do the sidereel thing, I just don't)
Castle: Maybe the only show I go out of my way to watch when it comes on.
I still get drawn into House.
I miss The Good Guys and Chase.
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

I see where Chuck has moved to Friday nights. It's one of my guilty pleasures. I'd watch it for Yvonne Strahovski alone, but it's actually has always been a pretty clever show, it seems able to introduce a new interest creating twist about the time the utter implausibility would otherwise demand so much of a suspension of disbelief that it would begin to lose all its verisimilitude.

Caught the first episode of "Hell on Wheels", AMC might have another damn good show on their hands.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Naw, man, I just watched Boogie Nights again.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

Dude, out of anyone around here I thought for sure you'd know that I'm specifically responding to the title of the thread.

I did watch the game, though, mainly to see how devastatingly and improbably my fantasy team would lose.

Of course I did, which was the key to my non sequitur. Damn, give me a little credit.

I really did have nothing to do, and I really did watch Boogie Nights again.

Cowboy. Whatcha think?
