2011 Playoffs
« on: September 30, 2011, 08:38:16 pm »
So the Rangers get torched whilst only getting two hits in the process.

According to the punditry, it's the shadows fault they couldn't hit.  In their home park.  Against a team that plays in a dome.

It's game 1.  Doesn't matter if they were beat by 1, 5,10, or 20.  The score to start today is 0-0.  In these short series though, they'll have to win today.

What an absolutely gutsy call by Maddon to start a green rookie with one big league start behind him.

And in pushing all those chips to the table he gets Price and Shields set up to bring the hammer. Fantastic.

How can you call that "bad"? He kept them in the ballgame, didn't he? Gave them a chance to come back? That's all you can really ask of a pitcher, y'know?

I didn't see the start before, but the 3 unearned runs aside, I heard from someone who saw the game and said Price didn't look good that game either.

I had been hearing (on XM mainly) that Niemann would start Game 1.  Did Madden play a hunch, or was he planning on Moore all along, and MLB/XM just had bad info?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I haven't been able to keep up lately.

Rays vs. _____. I'm not crazy about any of the NL teams. The ones I dislike least are the Dbacks and Phils.

If the Rays get knocked out, Tigers would be next.

I'm a fan of Longoria but also I also like Verlander. As an Astros fan I'm kind of bitter and hate to see upstart teams like the D'Backs, Rays, or Rangers, in the WS. There's even an old school part of me that would like to see a rematch of the 1968 series but I think my hatred for the Cardinals is too great to root for that.

I'd like to see a Rays-Phils series, though I wouldn't care about the NL as long as the Cardinals get bounced well before then.  Though, it would be hard for me to get excited about a series with the D-Backs and I'd rather not see an NL Central team (Brewers) make it.  However it turns out, I'd just like to see the Rays win.

Was a hell of a play by Ruiz.  I think he kept his mask on for the later play at the plate.

For people who know the rules real well.  Is there a line that the runner can't cross on that play?  For example, what if they came in with a closed fist to Ruiz' face?  Can an ump do something and if he does, what is the penalty?  Just an ejection?

Ruiz actually put himself into harms way... he jumped in front of the plate right as the ball and runner arrived.  I don't believe a runner should throw a forearm, but as a catcher, if you jump in front of a plate, they (the runner) own the right to get to said plate which includes running right over you.

Ruiz did that for the team and should be applauded.  Now, if the Phils think that the forearm was intentional, then take care of business and send one to the middle of the back of Jay to let him know.

I always thought the proper way to steamroll the catcher was shoulder first.

Ruiz is a tough motherfucker. He also did a great job not letting his legs get trapped in a breakable position. That could've been ugly.

The runner must be trying to reach the plate (or any other base for that matter).  A runner can't just run up and sucker punch a fielder for the hell of it.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The Astros have several guys who could have that nickname if they shared Young's ability to put the ball in play. Instead it's more like "Three-pitch AB".

This is a mildly intersting set of graphs about the playoff teams.

Seeing what Rule 5(V?) guys end up on playoff teams is always fun, as is the draft/FA balance amongst the teams.

I have no idea what "Cumulative season length of the playoff teams" means.

Cool link -- thanks. I'm guessing maybe that's adding up the length of all 162 games for each team?

Bingo.

Looking at the number of international signings on the Yankees makes me weep for what we no longer do.

Phils over Co-ards
Brewers over Snakes
Phils in a great series over Brewers

Rays over Rangers (yeah, I've been hanging out with Shaefer, what of it... *cough, cough* hehe, I'm hungry)
Tigers over Yanks
Tigers over Rays

Phils and Tigers in the world series.... Tigers win!

This is a mildly intersting set of graphs about the playoff teams.

Seeing what Rule 5(V?) guys end up on playoff teams is always fun, as is the draft/FA balance amongst the teams.

I have no idea what "Cumulative season length of the playoff teams" means.

Of the 8 franchises without a World Series title, 6 have been to the World Series.  3 of those 6 made the playoffs this year, and the Brewers and Rangers have a chance to make the Astros' World Series drought group a little smaller.

Inane playoff factoid: 3 of the 4 starters going tonight had a 3.69 ERA this year (Oswalt, Wolf, and Saunders); the other had a 3.79 (Jackson).

Philadelphia...meet Roy "All Mouth and No Trousers" Oswalt.

I'm not so sure I agree with this.  Roy, for all his faults as a pitcher known for throwing teammates under the bus for lousy performances, was not "all mouth" when it came to put up or shut up.  He put up... a lot of times, including the one game that got him a tractor from the owner.  I think the problem with Roy now is that the nagging injury to his back has made him suspect as an ACE-like pitcher.  He's pretty average on some days and others days if his curveball isn't spinning the wrong way, he's pretty darn good.  The thing is, what Roy Oswalt takes the hill on any given day is anyone's guess now.

He pretty pitches like a guy who is hurting to me.

But that is not entirely about what I posted either.  I said Roy Oswalt, much as I would love to bash him for those incidents of macho bravado that lead to Oswalt innings (including in the World Series), Roy did have much more successes as an Astros than failures.  But to me, today... right now... what Phillie fans have to root for.... is indeed a less than 100% Roy Oswalt.  To tell a Phillie fan that this is how Roy has always been is not something I can agree with 100%.  The Phillie Roy is a shell of what he once was because of the gimpy back.  Any player would be.  Same as the Lance Berkman with the gimpy knees is not the same as he used to be as an Astro.

This Yankees-Tigers game is taking forever, but quite dramatic.

Down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Yanks load the bases with one out.  A-Rod K's, Texieria walks to put the tying run 90 feet away.

And Swisher...  K's as well.

Awesome.  Hang in there, Tigres.

I agree.  Go Tigers!!

While I'm a little dismayed that the D-Backs lost after having good chances, and I'm annoyed that the Cards have jumped out to an early lead, it's going to take a lot more than that to remove my smile resulting from A-Rod's strikeout to end the Yankees' season.

The Rangers have created a juggernaut. Their ML team is fairly young with an ownership, of which Ryan only has about 5%, that says they will pay for players. Their farm system is among the best. They should be good for awhile. Having said that, Go Tigers.

With the NLCS matchup, I felt left with a team I despise and a team I really felt ambivalent toward (though I was hoping the D-Backs would have shut their team up in Game 5).  This article, however, makes me respect the Brewers a lot more and they at least for now, have my backing (which could be a curse, if you ask the Rays and Phillies).  Oh, and Nyjer Morgan, I'm looking to you to do something memorable against the Cards; great memorable or stupid memorable, I don't care which.

Oh, and Nyjer Morgan, I'm looking to you to do something memorable against the Cards; great memorable or stupid memorable, I don't care which.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/story/15705462/cards-vs-brewers-in-nlcs-think-thrilla-in-manila-baseballstyle
Eh, Fuck 'em both. All I care about is that they both lose their last game.

...okay, maybe I slightly prefer the Cards to lose theirs first.

For me, what makes this even harder to swallow is that the Jakes can partly thank your Houston Astros for bending over so graciously in that last series, and especially that godawful final game, and putting them into the playoffs.

At least I don't have to endure taunting. I've got two mousy coworkers, one of whom I have a lot of respect for, and they're both giddy about the Rangers. One of them wears a team shirt every day they play, often a hat as well. They both scurry in every morning to go over the previous game and then to talk about what's coming up, all bright-eyed and filled with wonder and anticipation and happiness. I look at them and remember what that was like, unable to wait for the next game because it was going to be so much fun.

Then I realize what the hell is going on here, I'm watching the fucking takeover right before my eyes and it is like the seventh round of a fifteen-round beating.

If they need to thank anyone, it's the Phillies.  Their sweep for the Braves in the final series let the Jakes in.  Then their failure to score runs in the NLDS let the Jakes through.

Brewers over Snakes
Phils in a great series over Brewers

Rays over Rangers (yeah, I've been hanging out with Shaefer, what of it... *cough, cough* hehe, I'm hungry)
Tigers over Yanks
Tigers over Rays

Phils and Tigers in the world series.... Tigers win!

The Onion AV Club has it right:

Quote
Brewers at Cardinals (TBS, 8 p.m.): We're totally unbiased about which team should win the NLCS (it's the Brewers), because we don't want to antagonize any of you (who don't like the Brewers), and we value all of our readers (just not the ones in St. Louis). It's game three, with the series tied up 1-1.

Heck of a throw by Cruz to get Cabrera at the plate in the bottom of the 8th. Gave Napoli plenty of time to set up for the collision.

The answer I've seen is because Milwaukee had a long NL tradiition. So you see the kind of lying bastards we're dealing with here.
Their "long NL tradition" moved to Atlanta.  We are talking about the Seattle Pilots here.  They do not even have a short tradition.

This should not be possible.

However, my strongest preference would be for the Brewers to win it all, but Bug gets excluded from the ceremony.

I'm still pulling for a Tigers/Brewers Series, but I think BG is right.  Rangers will win this thing.

I still think the Rangers are winning the whole thing, especially if the Yankees go down.

9 days later and it's becoming more and more obvious.  The Rangers right now are by far the best team left.  The Rangers remind me of the 1998 Astros ... just starting to win and have a great core that expects to be good for the next decade.  Except they don't have to deal with John Smoltz, Kevin Brown, and Kevin Millwood each having the games of their lives, and Glavine and Maddux in their primes.   I know, WFW.

i do not begrudge Ranger fans their success. we had a chance to keep Ryan an Astro twice and ran him off both times. the Rangers' rise to the top is completely Houston's fault.

What was the second time?  If his objective was to own a team and the Rangers were ripe, was there a way to keep him an Astro?  Was a deal with Drayton an option at the time?

Wow. Six innings was almost too long, there. I'm listening on the radio- how hard-hit was the Kinsler DP ball?

Yeah, he'd leaned on his change a lot more in the last two innings, looks like he's got a couple of different versions of the pitch. And then he threw a 99 mph fastball and a 100mph fastball in the eighth, for pitches #132 and #133...but the last one was a two-run HR to Cruz.

I have no problem with Braun, and reiterate my position that a Brewers world championship is the most desirable outcome, so long as Selig gets excluded from the ceremony.

For some reason this brought to mind the image of Selig - Sager offspring which naturally led to my considering which of the two would be tasked with dressing them. I'm not sure there is a preferable scenario.

I don't have any problem with Fielder, but only the constant reaffirmation of my intense Card hatred is making me able to stomach rooting for Bud's team. I'd still gladly watch the Tigers trounce either one of them.

MM: How would Selig be excluded from the ceremony? Isn't he normally the trophy presenter?

Hey, temper that one with the realization that of all those ex-Astros in the playoffs, the team that is going to win it all doesn't have one on their roster.

What, Darren Oliver's 2004 drive-by didn't endear you to him?

This may not make me popular in certain circles around here, but I'm going to root for the NL.  Whomever that may be.
I've been trying to get there but I just can't.  I grew up near Detroit, but when I moved I started following the NL more ... especially since I arrived in Texas about when the Colt 45's did.  1968 was like heaven, but it really did not lure me back.  Then the Senators showed up while I was overseas; they almost won me back, but not quite.  Even the chance to see an ALDS game at Arlington (with Clemens getting the win for the hated Yankme's) could not sway me from my NL loyalty.

All of that said, though, the defection of Round Rock and the impending/threatened move of the Astros to the junior circuit is really messing with my loyalties.  Rooting for the Cardinals is almost unthinkable (see 1968 reference above) and I will NOT root for Bud's Beermen.  And on top of everything, the only two teams I care about in the AL are the ones left standing.  So ...

This may not make me popular in certain circles around here, but I'm going to root for the AL.  Whomever that may be.

When the BBGs take their vengeance, they do so wearing 15-inch strap-ons without lubrication or the courtesy of a reach-around. The worst Astros team in franchise history, the Rangers winning their second consecutive pennant (one more than Houston, the Metroplex bandwagon would surely add), and the Cardinals winning another pennant. Combine that with the Rockets and the Texans, and this is one absolutely terrible time to be a sports fan in Houston (and a Horns fan too). I'm sure the dozen or so World Series titles, Super Bowl victories, NBA rings and BCS championships the Astros, Texans, Rockets and Horns will combine for over the next decade will make it all worth it, and we will look back and realize this was all just a bad dream.

I think it's because if you don't like either team, you root for the outcome that makes the Astros look better, which is clearly the Cardinals.

1) NL Team
2) Rangers and Astros are two of only eight franchises without a World Series and only six with at least one pennant but no World Series titles.  So the whole misery loves company aspect.
3) The whole Astros-to-the-AL-West debacle would get even worse if the Rangers won the World Series.

We're splitting hairs here. The difference between a four-game Pujols smirk, more golden leaves in the Tank Commander's crown and Berkman hitting a couple of walk-off home runs vs. Ryan's erasure of the Astros is a pair of shitty choices indeed.

It is clear though. We must pull for the Cardinals to win.

Houston sports: expect the worst, multiply that by 10 and that's what actually happens

I'm not sure its the worst. Would you trade them for the DC franchises? What about the Seattle Franchises?

I think it's because if you don't like either team, you root for the outcome that makes the Astros look better, which is clearly the Cardinals.

1) NL Team
2) Rangers and Astros are two of only eight franchises without a World Series and only six with at least one pennant but no World Series titles.  So the whole misery loves company aspect.
3) The whole Astros-to-the-AL-West debacle would get even worse if the Rangers won the World Series.

nothing makes this year's Astros team look better. the cardinals can burn in the green flames of my jealous hatred.

The Nats are at least showing some hope in the near future.  The Seahawks made a playoff run last year (albeit, a 7-9 season).

I think the only way this season could be worse for Astros fans is if Crane announced he was moving the team to the Metroplex.

All that, and the suspicion of Ryan's involvement in the move to the AL.
I only attended one game when Ryan was playing--this pitch got away from Ryan and it looked like the guy he hit was going to take his base but then didn't. I loved that Ryan's family owned the Express and really wished drayton found a way to keep Mr. Ryan associated with the Astros. I only have respect and admiration for Ryan as a player, businessman, robin ventura batterer, and owner. Also, my youngest brother is a deep and true Ranger fan and it was great to get to attend the WS game that the Rangers won with him. But all that goodwill fucking stops if the Astros share a division with the Rangers. I don't know if Ryan is involved in the push to get the Astros into the goddamn AL (I assume he is for the fuck all nothing that it's worth),. But if the Astros do end up in the same division then fuck goddamn Nolan Ryan involved or not. Yes, I prefer the NL to the AL, but if the Astros are in the AL then fuck it, they are my team hello DH may I have another. Angels, Mariners, and A's mean less than a brad pitt baseball movie that I will never see but so what. But the Rangers, well I'm just going to keep assuming that Mr. Ryan wanted the Astros in the AL west and I'm ready to hate them day one.  Don't have enough love in my dark three-chambered heart for another team.

Outside of ownership I don't think the rangers have any ex-Astros and the cardinals only have berkman and dotel  unless I missed somebody. Of the 320 players who were on the 40 man rosters I noticed Valverde on the Tigers and Hawkins and Randy Wolf on the Brewers. I don't think the Rays or Yanks have any former Astros. PENCE, Oswalt, and Lidge are at philly. probably  missed a few.
I think it seems like more because some of the guys got mentioned a lot in the postseason press. Oswalt got caught near a squirrel without a .22 handy, which apparently puts this particular Mississippi boy off his feed and  Valverde revealed his psychic powers.

I was already leaning this way because of LaRussa and Pujols, but the other night they showed a shot of McGwire in the dugout. I had managed to forget about him, but when they reminded me, I had no choice but to pull for the Rangers to completely destroy the Cardinals. The Rangers and Ryan are annoying, but at least so far they haven't risen to the level where I automatically pull against them. Ordinarily I'd be pulling for the NL team, but LaRussa trumps that. It would take the Yankees or the Red Sox to trump LaRussa.

ETA: fixed the spelling of McGwire's name.

I'm an NL guy. I always root for the NL team 99% of the time. I really dislike La Russa, Pujols, and Molina... I really like Ron Washington, Young, and Kinsler. I don't like the DFW Rangers but I hate the Cards. I almost don't care who wins but the Texas Astros fan in me really doesn't want to see the DFW Rangers and Lynn Nolan win the World Series. So I'm an NL guy

That was bizarre: the fist bounce off of Berkman's bat was foul (just past the LH batter's box) and then it wound up landing fair behind first base. I don't think it was so far outside that he hit it when it was that far foul (i.e., I don't think it went on a straight line from the bat to the first bounce to bounce behind first base), so it must have had some hook spin on it even though he hit it the opposite way.

Ok, props to Fox: that was cool. They showed an infrared image of Pujols AB where he fouled the ball off his heel, and you could see his heel light up when the ball hit it.

Reason #1 why the NL is far superior. LaGenius chose to shelve Carpenter in the 6th for a 2-on, 2-out pinch hitter. That's it - I'm rooting against the Rangers. I won't root for the Jakes, but I'll root against their opponent this series.

Anyone catch Berkman's postgame interview where he was asked what it's like to be a role model on the team?  Anyway, he transitioned to talking about who his role models were when he was coming up with the Astros?  He mentioned Jeff Bagwell, Brad Ausmus, and Bill Spiers as guys he looked up to.  Interesting whose name he left off.

Hasn't the consensus always been that Bagwell was the stronger leader in the clubhouse when both he and Biggio were on the team?  By the time Bagwell was gone, Berkman probably didn't feel that he needed any more role models.  Which is half the problem.

There could be more to it than that. I have a vague memory of Biggio mentioning PENCE and omitting Berkman when he was talking about the the future team leaders.Few people do anything with more seriousness and commitment than Biggio showed while playing baseball. It's easy to imagine their different degrees of commitment causing friction.

i think the consensus was that Biggio was a clubhouse lawyer who caused problems for managers.

I just threw up on my mother-in-law. Thank you.

wait, is this part of the hardcore gay porn that joe buck would be calling or your hypothetical reaction to watching it? and if it's the latter, then why would you be watching a hardcore gay porn with your mother-in-law, especially one that has joe buck doing the pbp?

I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm pulling for the Jakes.  Nolan has worked too hard to force AL ball down my Texan throat.

Can't say I'm rooting for the Jakes, but think I probably would've been pulling for the stRangers but-for my (perhaps misguided) belief that Nolan has been pushing way too hard to make this HOU to the AL thingie happen...

I wonder if it bothers Prince Fielder  to be near the man who consumed a chocolate replica of his estranged father.  After hitting a single Fielder has a man standing somewhere behind him who may or may not understand that Fielder is not made of chocolate. And this man is hungry, he has not eaten his preferred quantity of chocolate for a year. Very motivating to go for extra bases and keep some distance.

The Rangers chances at winning the World Series went from about 40% to 80% in a span of 20 minutes.  The last image of Pujols at Busch Stadium may be a mental blunder and him staring blankly in the dugout.

One of my Ranger fan coworkers - every day, wearing a gaudy Ranger shirt and Ranger hat - was happy that they'd got the split in St. Louis. We share astonishment at many of Ron Washington's moves, but then he allowed as how 'strategy doesn't mean a lot in AL ball.' That truth was mitigated by his glee that the Rangers finally have a team that can RUN. He's excited because this team is SO FAST and they win so many games with their speed.

AL fever. Catch it!

Pujols displays zero leadership after Game 2 loss

Quote
Motte talked for nearly 30 minutes, tackling the same questions again and again, most of them about what this means to the Cardinals’ hopes, something better addressed by someone who has won and lost a World Series and might know.

Across the way was Jay, in his second season. He made the throw to Pujols. It wasn’t a great one. Jay said he “pulled it a little bit.” He felt bad. He executed poorly. He also stood behind it. In fact, Jay said, he had talked about it on the bench with Pujols.

“We both said we should’ve probably did a little bit better,” Jay said.

There, too, were Craig and Freese, both kids themselves, going through the ringer. Combined, Motte, Jay, Craig and Freese have less experience in the major leagues than Pujols. Together, they make about 1/10th the money he does. Also absent were Yadier Molina, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman, 28 seasons of major league service among them.

They could disappear because of the culture Pujols created, one the organization enables. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa empowers Pujols to do what he pleases, right or wrong, even if it’s the equivalent of ordering the lobster-stuffed filet and sticking the minimum-wage worker with the bill. He will face no discipline. He never does. That is life with Pujols, and the Cardinals’ Omertà means nobody calls him on it.

This is tipping my scales. I think I can find glee with the Rangers winning if the good feeling in St. Louie gets a large turd laid on it.

I was saying to the same sort of thing to Mrs Pete last night--anything that makes Cardinal fans unhappy, I'm good with.  Anything that makes Rangerfan unhappy, I'm good with too.  I was really hoping for extra innings last night, so all the Jake fans in the stands would have to sit there until midnight, not get home until after one, and have a real shitty day today because of it.  A loss in the 9th works just as well.

Yes they will, win or lose. If the Rangers were swept or beaten decisively though, it would have helped blunt the takeover. If the Rangers win, the Jakes will still be Jakes but the Rangers will have the hot hand to slide all the way up the Astros' collective colon.

Damn fuckin' straight. I'm boycotting this World Series. Chiefly, I want the Rangers to lose, and remain without a championship, but the thought of watching or listening to a game and hoping for a key hit from Pujols or Molina or any of those fuckers (ex-Twin Punto is about as close as I could come to rooting for a Card) is just too sickening to me.

It's fuckers like Allen Craig and Nick Punto that make the coards annoy me.
I hate Pujols as bad as Satan hates Jesus. But the one that ranked right up there with him was Eckstein followed closely by Jim Edmonds.

AL fever. Catch it!

Footer weighs in with an anecdote about veterans v. rookies handling the media.

Quote
When the media had cleared, Bagwell went over to Everett and said, “I promise you that will never happen again.” And it didn’t. There was never a time, at any point, where the veteran players left it up to the kids to pontificate after an important game that was drawing a lot of attention, locally or nationally.

It was, quite simply, the greatest night by one player in the history of the 620 World Series games ever played.
It wasn't enough that Pujols joined Babe Ruth (1926 and 1928) and Reggie Jackson (1977) as the only players to hit three home runs in a World Series game. He also tied World Series records for runs batted in (six, by Bobby Richardson and Hideki Matsiui) and hits (five by Paul Molitor, with Pujols, incredibly, getting five hits off five different pitchers in a six-inning span). The hits -- two singles and three homers -- added up to 14 total bases, two more than the previous record shared by Ruth and Jackson. No one ever had a night this big.

"What it means," McGwire said, "is move over, Mr. October. There's a new Mr. October, and it's Albert Pujols."

Hell no. The first one was meaningful, the last two weren't clutch shots in the face of dire circumstances.

Hell no. The first one was meaningful, the last two weren't clutch shots in the face of dire circumstances.
Whereas Reggie's 3-HR game, his first one gave them the lead from being down by one, 2nd one increased their lead from 5-3 to 7-3, and the third made it 8-3, with the final score being 8-4. It was also a deciding Game 6, and last but not least, he didn't get 6 ABs like Pujols (thanks to his team scoring 16 runs), he got 3 ABs, total (after a 4-pitch walk his first time up).

As for the "Mr. October" thing, in 27 WS games Jackson hit .357/.457/.755 with 10 HR and 24 RBI. Pujols, in 12 games, has hit .310/.442/.667 with 4 HR and 8 RBI. Pujols has hit better in the LDS's and LCS's than Reggie did, but...

Sorry, Mr. Verducci and Mr. McGwire, I'll take Reggie Jackson here.

And thrusting it right at the BBGs, who took out their wrath on the Cardinals.   The Cardinals will not win another game.  The series is going exactly how the Mavs NBA Finals did this year (winning game 2 on the road, 4 and 5 at home, 6 on the road).

It takes either big brass balls or incredible stupidity to walk the bases loaded with Ogando hunting for the strike zone the way he is.

But they got Freese, so they look like geniuses.

Sheesh, step back from the ledge.  This almost seems like you are a Rangers fan troll trying to hook some Astros fans at their nadir.

If that's off base, the sooner you realize the Rangers are winning the World Series, likely in 6 games, the better off you'll be.   Try to ignore the Delta Bravos that live there and do something else Wednesday night if you can't handle it.

Verducci:

Really, my head hurts trying to figure out what La Russa did to this game but mostly how he tried to explain it away. It was like being stuck in a gigantic corn maze. Blindfolded. At midnight. After getting spun around 38 times. Every explanation led to another turn that led to another dead end or false exit. The bottom line is he lost the game having a matchup he didn't want -- a left-hander pitching to red-hot Napoli -- and he lost his last opportunity by getting a runner thrown out who, while down two runs, didn't mean anything. I've never seen a game even close to this one and I hope never again to have to try to explain one like it.

Maybe they could run over Tim McCarver on the way.

Maybe the best way to get rid of McCarver permanently is to let him ride home with LaRussa after the game.

Verducci fundementally misunderstands the hit and run and baseball strategy in general.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

They were speculating that Pujols called it from the batter's box. On the one hand, that seems preposterous; on the other hand, it seems like just the sort of thing that an over-entitled Pujols might do, enabled by LaRussa's coddling.

ETA: It seemed pretty clear from the conversation between LaRussa and Craig that LaRussa didn't call for it.

ETA: It seemed pretty clear from the conversation between LaRussa and Craig that LaRussa didn't call for it.

Craig, after drawing a one-out walk, was thrown out easily trying to steal second base as Pujols took a high pitch from reliever Alexi Ogando.
Craig said he saw the hit-and-run sign from third-base coach Jose Oquendo. Pujols told some reporters he was the one who had called for the hit-and-run.
Whoever the source, the result clearly was faulty.
"We're trying to be aggressive and try to make something happen," Oquendo said. "(Pujols) couldn't hit it.
Said Craig, "Ogando threw an unhittable pitch. It was a perfect play for them.
Manager Tony La Russa labeled the hit-and-run a "mix-up. And on our team, nobody gets thrown under the bus. So it was a mix-up."
Oquendo said Craig did nothing wrong although it didn't look good.
Craig said, "I got the sign and I ran. It's as simple as that. I don't know anything besides that. I did what I was told."

Starting a runner on a 3-2 count is not the same as a hit and run.  Pujols was not trying to poke one through the right side of the infield.

Count was 1-1 on Pujols in the 7th.

lots of players are allowed to do this. that is not coddling. Falk allowed certain players at UT to do it. i'd be surprised if Pujols would be one of them, though. why would you want your best hitter/RBI man giving himself up to move a runner?

ok. if he thought that was a hit and run, he's an idiot.

This is Verducci's quote from LaRussa:

"Yeah, I trusted Albert could put the ball in play. In fact, the two swings that he fouled the ball off with the second baseman going over, the hole was there and all of a sudden it was first and third and nobody out and the last pitch, the guy has a very live arm and it sailed on him and he missed. I liked sending him and having a chance to open that inning up, and it didn't work."

And Verducci's explanation:  Think about what La Russa is saying here. Pujols represents the tying run, and yet La Russa is talking about him as if he is Nick Punto. He is thinking about Pujols -- who two days earlier joined Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson as the only men ever to hit three homers in a game -- hitting a groundball through the right side of the infield with Kinsler covering second base. A groundball to second base with Pujols finally getting a chance to swing the bat as the potential tying run! Do you know how many opposite field singles Pujols had this year in 651 plate appearances? Eleven. Less than two percent of his plate appearances. And that counts all opposite field singles of any kind, including line drives, not just seeing-eye ground balls through the vacated second base hole.

I think it's safe to say that Verducci thinks running on a full count to stay out of the DP is the same as a hit and run.

I am not familiar with batters calling their own hit and runs, anyone with some insight on how it is done?

I assume he has some sort of signal....Touch your hat with your left hand, take 3 practice swings, or something of that nature?  Does the runner relay back that he got the sign?  Is there a way for the coach to still call it off?  Just simply call time out?

For someone who micromanages so much, I am surprised LaRussa even allows this.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.
