Excellent preview, GBB. And, having bought my first house with my fiancee a year ago, I remember very well what you're going through. Seller dawdled on all kinds of shit (hello, we've got a tax credit we're trying to qualify for here, can you get your shit together?), and insisted that the well was totally fine- giving us no credit despite plenty of evidence to the contrary. The pump had multiple "episodes" and finally gave out completely on New year's eve. Thanks, jerks.

I sure wish I'd hired a better inspector when we bought this one; not that the seller would have fixed anything, but I would have a better idea about what was already wrong. Like all the siding being installed incorrectly.

The American mentality, of having the outgoing owner fix shit, makes no sense to me.  I'd rather buy as is and get a discount for the stuff that's wrong.  That way, I get it fixed and fixed properly.

Chez Limey was actually built for me, but the old house was sold and the buyer had a list of things that were "wrong" from his inspector.  I simply asked my agent "how much?".  They gave me a number and we did the deal.  I didn't fix nothin'.

Did you see the episode with the upstairs room that had been added by closing in a porch? Every time they looked at something, it just got worse and worse. It turned out that the floor joists ran parallel to the original building wall, so the entire load was carried by two 2x6's that weren't even tied to the main building, just resting in a notch created by removing bricks. The load on the end was supported by two 3" iron posts that weren't tied to the 2x6's they were supporting. And those posts were resting on cinder blocks that were beginning to crumble. The entire thing was just one good wind gust away from tumbling down. So Holmes asks the homeowner "does this room ever feel a little unstable?" And the guy says "yeah, sometimes when I'm up here it kind of feels like it's swaying, especially when the wind is blowing." Yowza.

There was another snowball-rolling-down-a-hill episode that wound up with them discovering an abandoned fuel oil tank in the backyard, which had to be removed, which necessitated an EPA inspection and remediation program. It just kept getting worse and worse, but in the end they got everything straightened out.

I watch those things just to remind myself how simple my repair projects actually are.

In Houston not long ago I spotted a google maps guy driving around and I immediately detoured and followed him around at close proximity for many blocks. After he figured out that we weren't planning to run him down and rob him or whatever he began to ignore the goofy antics that we were up to in hopes of some small measure of google fame.

But the tv was great, wasn't it?  Seriously high quality shows on the BBC, and even the cable channels catered to an audience that was a bit more cultured (like History, etc).  They do also have as low TV standards as we have (reality shows and all), but the alternatives to watching them are much better there.  I'd pay a lot to have Sky TV as it is in the UK on my TV in Katy.  I'd even give up American TV altogether (sports included).
