Reynolds quite note with a quote from his High School Coach. Sounds a little like a toolsy. left-handed hitting, outfielder with good speed. In addition, he appears to have some room to grow.

9th rd: Jonas Dufek, college senior RHP from Creighton.

BA: Jonas Dufek won two games and MVP honors at the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, then improved to 12-1, 2.08 by beating Georgia with a 10-strikeout complete game in Creighton's NCAA regional opener. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound righthander's stuff and command improved this season. He boosted his fastball from 87-89 mph a year ago to 89-91, tightened his slider and did a better job of locating both pitches. He has a loose arm and a sound delivery.

Kyle Winkler finally gets picked in the 10th by Colorado.

10th rd: Kyle Hallock, LHP from Kent State.

BA: A Kent State lefthander was named Mid-American Conference pitcher of the year, but it wasn't Andrew Chafin. It was Kyle Hallock, who returned for his senior season after the Phillies drafted him in the 49th round last June. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder is a craftsman who gets outs by throwing four pitches for strikes. He excels at pitching off his fastball, working both sides of the plate at 87-88 mph and peaking at 90. His changeup and slider are solid offerings, giving him a chance to remain a starter when he gets to pro ball.

Injuries killed him and Purke, probably lost about 3+ million dollars combined.

Kyle Hallock pitched against Texas State in the regional tournament.  He doesn't have over powering stuff, but he is a very good pitcher who kept us off balance all day working both sides of the plate.

Figuring out people's race by name alone would be a hell of a skill.

ETA:  I also know nothing about any player mentioned in the draft.  I've seen Rendon play a few times, and I remember Jungmann throwing no-hitters in the post-season either last year or the year before, but that's about it.

As a draft eligible sophomore, he does have a chance to go back to the draft next year and still have some bargaining power, but likely, yes.

11th rd: Justin Gominsky, CF from University of Minnesota. Kvasnicka's teammate last year.

BA: Outfielder Justin Gominsky looked like an early-round pick for 2011 when he hit .338 with 15 extra-base hits and 11 steals as a freshman, but he missed all but six games last year when he injured his right knee. He has been slow to recover from the layoff and adjust to the new bats, and batted just .307/.367/.381 as a redshirt sophomore this spring. Despite the lack of performance, the 6-foot-4, 185-pounder has easily the best package of tools among the state's position players. He has slightly above-average speed and arm strength, and he plays a fine center field. A righthanded hitter, he'll have to refine his approach and get stronger if he's going to do damage at the plate.

BA on Stubblefield, whose name is probably worth $500k on its own. They ranked him 25th in Texas, so it looks like he fell due to signability concerns.

Chris McFarland was supposed to be the main attraction at Lufkin HS this spring, but scouts came away more impressed with Gandy Stubblefield. He also upstaged Bryan Brickhouse, who entered the year as the state's top-rated pitching prospect, beating him with an 11-strikeout three-hitter in a mid-April matchup. Stubblefield is projectable at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, and he worked at 88-92 mph with a peak of 94 this spring. He also has promising velocity on his curveball, though it's inconsistent. A Texas A&M recruit, he still needs a lot of polish.

Stan Lee didn't do First Class, which led to some inconsistencies.  For instance, watch the first few minutes of Last Stand and think of Xavier in the beach scene at the end of First Class.  It was a decent movie overall, though.

I asked my son after the movie why Stan Lee did not do his usual cameo (so Alfred Hitchcock of him!) and he said we probably missed it.  I was sure I did not see his cameo (unlike in Thor, the cameo was very well done!).  Now I know why.

Anybody know if "Noe" Ramirez from Cal State Fullerton has been picked yet?  I know, he's a reliever, will always be a reliever and it probably third day fodder, but you know... I kinda have a vested interest.... plus, he's a damn good reliever too!

Wow, seems like a lot of pitchers (especially RHP). Who's going to man the field in Greenville and TC behind these guys? Do they have a lot more promising position players coming from the Dominican than pitchers this year?

Only 4 HS'ers through 17 rounds. A tad surprising. Astros under Heck had 10 through 20 rounds in 2010, 7 through 20 in 2009, and 8 through 20 in 2008.

It's a pretty sure bet that since round 6 or so the Astros have been eyeing their depth charts at Tri-City and Greeneville when picking players.

I asked my son after the movie why Stan Lee did not do his usual cameo (so Alfred Hitchcock of him!) and he said we probably missed it.  I was sure I did not see his cameo (unlike in Thor, the cameo was very well done!).  Now I know why.

Marvel sold the rights to the X-Men years ago before they had their own internal film studios so they have limited control over X-Men and Spiderman.

Then they may be using an Excel doc that keeps deleting all names they put in the "Pitchers" column.

Round #25
Billy Flamion 6'01" 195 L/L LF Central Catholic HS (CA)

Ranked 124th overall by BA. Here's what they have to say about him:

Flamion played well on the showcase circuit last summer and showed some of the best bat speed in this year's high school class—and from the left side of the plate. He is also a football player and came into the spring a little rusty with some softness to his body. He pressed at times and didn't show the kind of production scouts hoped to see. He could be an above-average hitter with above-average power, and a team will have to buy into Flamion's bat because he doesn't show many other tools. He's a below-average runner and he has an average arm, so it's likely he winds up in left field. He also needs to work on making quicker adjustments. Once thought of as a supplemental-round talent, Flamion's stock has slipped and he's looking more like a third-rounder. It will likely take more than third-round money to buy him out of his commitment to Oregon.

Back on April 24 ("Midseason Top 50") they ranked him #45 and said "Good athlete has impressive bat speed and power from the left side of the plate."

How the hell did he slip to the 25th round? Hope the Astros can sign him... cool name too.

That last sentence... "It will likely take more than third-round money to buy him out of his commitment to Oregon."

I mean, do you realize how hard it is to outbid Oregon?
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Somebody - anybody - please explain to me why Rachel McCoy saying that agents call college athletes is somehow news.

Oregon's tempting, but you have to weigh it against the risk of dying of dysentery on the way there.

And the dysentery risk comes after you and your family lose an axle and 2 sets of clothing attempting to ford the river

Somebody - anybody - please explain to me why Rachel McCoy saying that agents call college athletes is somehow news.

I'll hang up and listen.

It doesn't matter, because it's being picked up and spread around. Whether you want it to be or not, it is now 'news.' Whatever her intentions were, nothing good can be served by her going on a radio show and saying what she said. She's getting a very good lesson in how information is parsed to feed the beast.

Wasn't she a BJ major at Baylor? Didn't they teach this?

No, no, no.

How to get a football player is covered in BJ 101.

That is the pre-req for DeepThroat 201, which covers how to get a quarterback.

Day 3, rounds 31-40 the Astros continue to pick up college arms (5).  They tabbed a couple of high school arms and a few college position players as well.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the pitching farm hands at extended get released over the next 2 weeks.

Wade/Heck just drafted Chase Davidson again, this time in the 41st rd. Hmmm, anyone think he regrets not signing the first time around?

From a draft perspective, I would think so, since he ended up having a really mediocre career at UGA

Was thinking the exact same thing.  Chase played in 51 games (38 starts) this season, hitting .278/.341/.497 with 7 HR and 13 walks (against 50 K's).  Heck's assessment from '08:

Quote
“Goes by Chase. Another Atlanta area kid. After you see enough summer baseball you usually equip yourself with little quick phrases for each guy. For me he was the lefthanded hit collector. I think every game I saw him during the track of time since tournaments and showcases whether it’s summer or fall, the guy always got two hits when I saw him. That just stuck with me. He’s big. He’s strong. He’s eager to get out and start his professional career. He’s got bat speed. He’s got a chance to hit for average and power. Big, strong guy. We’re probably going to try to take him to the outfield and really try to expand his versatility defensively. But we feel like we got a pretty good looking hitter here.”

For class, 44th rounder Blake Ford is listed as "5S" at Lamar (as opposed to a SO, JR, or SR). Anyone know what this stands for? 5th yr senior?

May I assume that J-1, J-2, and J-3 refer to 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-year JUCO players?

At this point any reason to sign in 41st rd rather than finishing up college on scholarship and trying to go earlier next draft as a senior?  (and I know SRs have minimal negotiating leverage, but neither does a 41st rd JR I'd imagine...).

And in the 50th, the Astros take HS OF Colton Davis (ranked 99th in Florida by BA) and call it a draft.

Mets selected C Edward Rohan two picks later. Bet our 4th-rounder hates that guy.

Thought I heard Brown say Wade said they drafted 10 of the top 120 on their board. Just shows how divergent opinions are, especially after the top picks.  Or maybe the differences between players after the top picks are just really subtle.
