NLCS Game 5
« on: October 21, 2010, 07:25:18 pm »
After 1.5 it's 1-0 Giants.

The Giants jump on the Phillies for one run in the first. Phills with their backs to the wall seem to be gripping. Utley, Rollins, and Howard are all sucking. They can't win if those guys can't elevate their games.
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it

Halladay is throwing a lot of balls, doesn't seem to have his usual control. After 2 innings it giants 1, Phillies 0.

Just when the Phils put together an ugly inning in the bottom of the 2nd, the Giants shit the bed in the top of the third.

The Giants go Keystone Cops and the Phillies score 2 runs on some crazy shit with non-bunts and balls bouncing off players.

Wow. Torres gets a hit that was touched by three Phillies. Well four if you count Ruiz.

Back to back doubles by Burrell and Ross. Werth with a good throw from RCF to get Ross at third trying to tag from second. End of 4
phillies lead 3-2.

Worrell, I mean McCarver (after 2-2 ball makes it a full count with 2 outs):
"That's a key pitch there because now both runners will be going and the outfielders won't be able to throw Posey out if there's a base hit."

And strikeout to end the threat.  Hey Giants hitters, here's a hint-- Halladay likes to throw the slider out of the zone on full counts.

I recently took a new teaching job in the city of Lafayette in Contra Costa.  Not that cool, but lots of funny looks from rich old ladies in SUV's as I ride my bike to work on Lafayette city streets.

Half the time I have my 2 year-old with me riding on a kid seat mounted on the handlebars (she goes to a daycare on the same campus as the school).  I'm a good human.  Except for the time she almost ran headfirst onto the bart tracks while I was texting.

Watching Lidge this year, the slider is low 80s and the fastball around 90.  Seems like a steep drop from the Astros days (I recall mid 90s fastball and high 80s slider).

Anyone follow him closely these last years.  Was the decline sudden, or has it been gradual?

I certainly wasn't implying shit about Pujols, nor was there any implication about his pitching; it really was a simple fucking question.  Jees.

Was the drop in velocity coincidental with the knee, or was it gradual?

I didn't think you were, but I couldn't resist. We are not known for our restraint around here, you know.

Yes, his fastball was in the mid to high 90's with a slider coming in at high 80's just a few years ago. I'm no expert on how, why, or how quickly it has changed. I would not be surprised to learn that both age/wear-n-tear and experience has slowed him down a little. Maybe he took a little off to have more control and movement on both pitches.

Actually wasn't trying to pick on you, so sorry it came out that way.  I just think that as a pitcher gets older and matures a bit, velocity gives way to location.  Greg Maddux used to throw in the low to mid 90s when he first came up and as he matured, his velocity was more in line with 90-91 tops, but hovered at 88-90 most of the time.  He, however, had pinpoint location and movement on his pitches.  So there is that.

With power pitchers, they usually tell you that the career expectancy is short, so that is a natural progression.  What most of those power pitchers do is re-invent themselves as location and hard stuff type of pitchers.  So hitting 95mph on the radar isn't entirely the aim of what they try to do any more.  It's hit an outside corner in the black with a late moving two seamer at around 90 mph that is much more devastating and conducive to a longer career.

Insofar as Lidge is concerned, I do believe it is a combination of what works for him now and learning how to be a better pitcher because of nagging injuries in the past that led him to that epiphany.
