Pam gets busy (SFW)
« on: October 07, 2010, 03:28:29 pm »
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

How about winning more games?  That's entertaining too.

The scoreboard is hd, and replaces the TV screen, which is not.  For a replay, they can replay it blown up on the entire huge-ass scoreboard, which is kinda cool, but otherwise the board will be divided into different screens which correspond to the areas of the current scoreboard.  So during play, the screen might be divided into the rosters, the inning boxes, and the picture of the player at bat plus his stats.  And the cheer cues.  Don't forget the cheer cues.  Between innings, the kiss cam will be monstrous, not that it's not already.

I hadn't been to DKR since the Godzillatron was installed. Gigantic screen, immense replays, super bright, constant row of ads on the right and left border, and no display of down, distance, yard line.  This new scoreboard is just another goddamn ad machine for Drayton. I hope it translates to something meaningful on the field too.

What a bunch of crotchety old bastards you all are.  If you're bothered by flashing ads everywhere you look, you're all-around fucked in 2010.

They needed a new screen.  The current one is terrible. Good for them for investing in the whole package.

I am all for a screen in left field;  we sat off the first base line a couple of times this year and the lack of information (avg, hrs, etc) was annoying.

The screen in place is terrible.  They need a new one.  Hopefully the one in LF doesn't block the view of downtown.  Not sure what to think of this hip new area.

I am, too. I'm all for anything that lets an interested fan get more from the game. The ribbon boards will be little more than constant advertisements much like what you get at Reliant where the usable signage to advertising garbage ratio is abominable.

there you go.  it'll be great.  especially when they show those controversial calls that the umpire blew.

Maybe my sarc meter is broken?  In case it’s not, they will likely not show the controversial plays.  Here in DC, where they have a pretty sweet HD screen and ribbon setup, it actually works well.  They don't ever show blown calls but they do replay good plays (by both teams, which is nice).  When not showing replays, your other post is correct; the screen is divided up into logical sections showing batting order, player profiles as they come up, in-progress pitching stats, etc...  I find that it nicely adds to the game.

Regarding the kissing cam and resolution, you are correct.  At a game last year,  the board showed a couple kissing and, at separation, the stringy phlegm-globber filament as they pulled apart.  Nice.  I don’t know how Pam will architect the ribbon boards down there but here in DC, they really only show ads maybe 20% of the time and never during game play.  Only in between innings.  The rest of the time, they display game data like the box score, pitch speed, player up to bat, pitch count, etc... and go berserk with lots of flashy graphics when they kick on rally music or cheers/chants.  It’s well-done here in DC and I don’t mind them at all.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

I agree with das that the visual displays and the overall experience at the Nationals Park are well done.  However, MMPUS has a ridiculous train, a Fowl Pole and a Hunter's Lodge all of which Nationals Park lacks an equivalent.  Its not the tools, so much, as the carpenter that one needs to worry about.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic about the controversial plays.  The screens sound like an improvement over the existing right field scoreboard and the center field television screen.  The ribbon screens, maybe not so much, but after a few of us have epileptic fits brought on by flashing lights, maybe they'll get the message.  As for ad space, as I understand it, advertisements never existed in ballparks before Enron was opened in 2000, and the sponsors name on my back in little league is a figment of my imagination.

I can't remember where I heard it, or if it's even true, but I've long been under the belief the umpire union is such a cluster of thin skinned ninnies that they had it in their deal with MLB that "controversial" plays (which would highlight something they got wrong) couldn't be replayed in the stadium on the big screens.

I have nothing to base this on, but sure seems such a large investment only improves the appeal of MMP to potential buyers.

For Sale:  Developing MLB Team, Plenty of high ceiling potential with limited MLB experience (i.e. cheap for the next 5 yrs), and a First Class Stadium with fanbase accustomed to $9 beer.  Asking price: $600million.

From the article it sounded like the money was a mandatory part of the lease that was set aside for improvements, not discretionary income.

I rarely notice the train anymore.  Not sure why it bothers anyone.  I still think the train should circle the building with a homerun or win.  That way people outside would have an idea of what happened.

If they are getting rid of the Citgo sign, I will be very happy.  I hate that sign.

Because it has NOTHING to do with the team.  I get Union Station, blah, blah, blah. I even understand that there's a train in the City of Houston crest.  But there's literally no relation between trains, engineering and the Houston Astros.  It might as well be a giant crawfish hovering above left field.

This could be fixed by changing the team name back to the Colt .45s and adopting a general Western theme which would encompass trains.  Alternatively, you could replace the train and Junction Jack with a spacecraft of some sort and Orbit and change the uniforms to one from the pre-McLane era and paint the seats rainbow colors.

What's wrong with blockbuster (besides a dead business model)?

Back in the day, sending collection agents after you for only three weeks of late fees seemed a little excessive.

I never had that, just the late fees that weren't really worth disputing, but added up.  Just general lack of good service.  Never had the same problem with other rental companies.

Because it has NOTHING to do with the team.  I get Union Station, blah, blah, blah.

Why must it be more than that?  It's a ballpark.  At Union Station.

Because the business side knows that you and I are going to come to the ballpark no matter what stupid condiments they have racing around the field.  But for the other 35k they want to draw to every game, they put on the spectacle.

And regardless of how ludicrous it is, it works.  MMPUS is considered an entertainment destination in Houston. With a fairly crappy team for 2/3rds of the season, they still managed to draw sell tickets to nearly 29k a game.

Compare that to the 1992 team which drew less than 17k per contest.  In the Astrodome (pre hanging gardens and fountains in the corners), in a slightly better economy.

My complaint isn't that they do it, more of why does it have to be so crappy?

Bullshit.  The Astros need all types of fans.  It's not realistic to think you can put 30k hardcore baseball fans in the seats every night.  My girls can hardly watch a full inning, but love going to the games because of everything else going on around them.

Those other fans make it so the rest of us can watch a competitive team in a very nice ballpark.

This could be fixed by changing the team name back to the Colt .45s and adopting a general Western theme which would encompass trains.

10 years in, and I'm still kind of surprised that this hasn't happened yet. If you look closely, much of the more permanent logos around the park simply say "Houston Baseball" -- not even Astros. I really thought when the new park opened that we were headed for an old-west/trains name change.

The hot sauce races, the train, Junction Jack, the "Dome Patrol" (or whatever they are called now), the pumpkins, the video features on the players, the food, the text in a song for the next half inning, the hide the baseball under a bean can game, the ticket relocation promotion, the kiss cam...

None of which have anything to do with the actual game, and are thus all part of the spectacle.

Personally, I don't care.  It would be nice if the team could fill the seats every night with baseball purists who are there first and foremost to watch baseball.  Personally, I like the fact that they make an effort to reach out to the non-hardcore baseball fan to make the place welcoming and fun.

If they didn't, I'd probably be going to the games by myself most of the time.  Plus, more tickets sales = more money which in theory should = better baseball product on the field.

However, if it becomes the NBA with rap/pop music blaring while the teams are in their offense, I'll pass.

You know what I hate?  That stupid bull on the scoreboard in Durham.  That's stupid.  Hit the bull and win a steak?  Cheesy.

Signs on scoreboards and outfield wall are fine.  Cows climbing up the "Fowl Poles" is not fine. It's a fairly clear delineation.

I was startled, though, on the last game of the year, that Mild didn't win.  When he tripped right at the ribbon, I was stunned.  Stunned.

Mild won the second to last game.

That whole race is so offensive.  Between the underlying message that Mild isn't permitted to win because everyone knows that real Messicans are Fiery! and if they're not Fiery! then they are too stupid and lazy to accomplish anything and the fact that in Houston Texas of all fucking cities we should be proud to get a damn good taco any million number of places that put taco bell to shame, I just watch on in horror hoping that the Astros actually get decent money for such a soulless debacle.

The Fowl Poles are crappy.

They have a big Chik Fil A area at the Bulls ballpark in Durham.  Which is hilarious because right across from the sign saying "EAT MORE CHIKIN" is a huge bull with a "HIT BULL WIN STEAK" sign underneath it.

So Aramark style cafeteria food is actually "first-class dining." I did not know that.

It didn't say that.  It said "world class gourmet."

The Diamond Box food is pretty good.  5&7 isn't that bad either.  Who knows?  It might work, as long as Pam resists the temptation to provide a hip cool trendy soundtrack to the experience.  It's hard to fist pump with a fistful of Sheriff Blaylock nachos.

A little off the subject, but has anyone watched Nancy Grace lately?  Besides HH, I mean?

Me, neither.  But I come across her show from time to time while surfing up and down the channel lineup trying to find something else as flat out entertaining as Ancient Aliens to watch.  Nancy's lopsided head keeps getting smaller and smaller on the screen, harder and harder to see.  Not a bad thing, but damn.  There must be six or seven rows of banners and streaming information starting at the bottom, there is often a split screen with four or five 'experts' commenting passionately on some 'case' I never heard of, but it involves some guy killing his newlywed wife and sending her to the local landfill, or a missing child whose mother is a demon/scatter-brained bimbo/trailer park slut and, oh yeah, has an affinity for crystal meth.

But, goddamn, I cannot stand Nancy Grace, but I think it is sad HLN seems intent on shrinking her head down to nothing.  And the typical screen shot of her show now has so much crap going on in it, it is what I am guessing the inside of an manic-depressive person's brain must look like.  Come to think of it, the Astros should project Nancy's show on their new HD screen between innings at games.  Then we'll really see how much everyone likes the high-resolution and giant size.

All I know is that she needs to have her "Breaking News" banner privileges revoked.

I'd still knock her eyebrows off. You know...just on principle.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

"Your all-inclusive season ticket features a plush, reserved seat in the Astros Press Club, a wide selection of gourmet foods including specialty items along with traditional ballpark fare and non-alcoholic beverage service along with access to The Backstop Bar."

This is madness.   Who needs NON alcoholic beverages served to their seat?   Why would I have to get up and walk around to get my drink on?

I won't be buying a seat, but I will happily jump on the suit to challenge their use of the terms "gourmet" and "first-class."

A question that has been troubling me a lot lately:  Would I fuck Body of Evidence star and retired FBI-trained criminal profiler Dayle Hinman, given the opportunity?  Or wouldn't I?

There are so many different ways of looking at this.

You know how this works, right? You pay, what, $18k for a seat and you get "free" cafeteria food but you still have to buy $8 beers like the rest of the schlubs.

Well, yeah, that is one way of looking at it.

Plus, one couldn't bullshit her because she'd be profiling you the whole time and would probably know what you were up to before you did.  That'd put a serious crimp in my style.
